Hello All!
I Want To Exercise, I Really Do, But I Am Almost ALWAYS Too Tired After Work To Bother. :frown: (Maybe I'm Lazy, But I Swear I'm Tired). I Don't Know How To Get An Energy Boost To Try And Hit The Gym For An Hour A Day... I Get Home And All I Want To Do Is Lay Down And Rest. Then That Turns Into Watching TV And Not Bothering To Get Up Anymore. :grumble: I Start Work At 6am And Am Home By 3pm So I Have The Whole Afternoon To Exercise... I Just Can't.
Any Suggestions, Ideas Or Energy Foods/Drinks I Can Try To Get The Ball Rolling?
Any Help Is Appreciated.
Thank You! :glasses:

The only way to get the ball rolling is to do it, in my opinion.
Instead of sitting down, go for a walk. Down the street and back is a good start. When you get to the end of the street, you may decide to go further. Then further. Maybe one day you'll decide to jog it instead. Maybe you'll decide you don't really need the gym - or maybe you'll find that moving around like that boosts your energy levels enough to get you to the gym.
Another trick is to have something citrus. It's been known to wake people up and get them moving. A small glass of orange juice (without sitting down) and then going out might be the kick you need.0 -
I used to come home from work and just relax and watch TV because of the same reason - no energy. Once I started going to the gym instead I felt so much more energy after work! My trick isn't food or drink but rather put on your workout clothes as SOON as you step inside your house. Once you're dressed for the gym you have no excuse! Just go. Once you are there you will start to feel more energized. Maybe you should start with 30-40 minutes 3-4 days a week and work your way up to an hour. Too much too fast can be discouraging! Good luck!0

You start work awfully early . . . are you maybe not getting enough sleep at night?0
-
can you try going before work instead?0
-
If you just make yourself start, the energy will come. It is hard to get started, but it really does increase your energy level. I used to be a complete slug by the end of the day, but now I still have energy when I get off to go home and cook dinner for everyone, work out, and do whatever needs to be done.0

How many calories a day do you eat?0

I found that not going home after work, and going straight to the gym gives me the best results. It is great getting home and being done. I don't feel guilty for sitting around watching TV then.0

Bring your workout clothes with you every day. Change at the gym. Workout immediately after work, don't even let yourself go home. It's amazing how much energy you'll have for the rest of the evening.0

Work out 3-4 times starting tuesday next week. you will be amazed at...
1 - How much better you will sleep, with LESS sleep
2 - How much more energey you will actually have
3 - Seeing results will give you that extra boost to get your *kitten* to the gym
good luck!!0 -

What if you do a specific program that runs for a few months? There are tons online and on dvds etc.
I'm doing Jamie Eason's LiveFit right now - it's a 12 week program with every single day planned out for you. I never want to miss a day so I don't mess up my schedule. I like having a program to work from and not have to plan my own workouts everyday. When that is over I am going to start Cathe Friedrich's XTRAIN, which I also think is 12 weeks.
Or maybe you could set a specific goal like training for a half marathon.0 -

I have the same problem I am up at 5:45 and don't get home till almost 6 most days.0

This, exactly. If I went home, I'd be tempted to laze about. I take my workout clothes to work every day.0 -
I use the same excuse.
Just do it. Amazing how energized you feel afterwards when just a hour earlier, you claimed to be too tired.0 -
Make sure you're eating well too... it may be hard when you work to eat at consistent times but try to keep it as consistent as possible. Eating roughly the same amount for each meal will help too. And a good meal with some good carbs at least an hour and a half or so before you work out should help alot too.. Sometimes when I'm not feeling well or am tired I'll just have a piece of bread with a tbsp. of peanut butter.. or half that if 'm only a little tired... and a 1/4 of a banana.0

Eat.
The only reason to be low in energy by the time you get home (besides depression and other health issues) is that you didn't eat enough or the right foods.
You could also be lethargic from a sugar/caffeine crash. I wouldn't recommend taking more sugar/caffeine to fix it either. Just get your body used to a diet higher in nutrition and you will have different results.0 -

Exactly what I was thinking.0 -
If you really want to do it, you'd change into your exercise clothes before you leave work, then get home and start your workout before you had a chance to do something else.
Just sayin'...0 -

This! I used to make the same excuses for myself. If it's important enough you just do it.
And I agree with everyone else; once you start exercising you'll be amazed at how much more energy you have.0 -
That happened to me..I'd say I was tired then before you knew it I was in a slump and didn't exercise for weeks. Find something you love to do or join a class where you have to go.
I started the C25K program. I get home, take the dog out, cook dinner, have dinner with my boyfriend and then change into my workout clothes after dinner even though I don't exercise until an hour later but since I have the clothes on there are no excuses.
I also just signed up for a kickboxing class so I have to go.0 -
Try putting on your workout clothes before you go home. I noticed that if I'm dressed before I get home I go straight to working out. I also have several workout partners. Find someone else who is motivated to work out and the days you don't feel like it, this person can push you to do it.0

A body in motion stays in motion!! The more you move the more energy you will have.... just have to get through the first couple weeks. Just Do IT!0
-
I'd say the same thing, and for you to try what I used to do before my schedule changed last month....
I got off work at 3 everyday, and just went right after I got off. Just bring your gym stuff with you in the morning, and the first stop from work should be the gym... just make sure you eat a protein bar or some sort of snack before starting the workout to not burn out in the middle of it. The snack will really help boost your energy level and will help you re-energize after the work day and fuel up before the workout!
This worked for me for nearly 3 solid years :-)0 -
I would go see a doctor before starting an exercise program. Once you are cleared begin an exercise program.0

Not exercising is actually making you more tired.
Its a downward spiral you can only stop by pushing yourself and forcing yourself to exercise. Its hard at first but once you get used to it, you will love it. For me - I have a hard time waking up early in the mornings to exercise before work. I literally have to drag myself out of bed but once I am out running I have never once regretted the decision not to sleep in. Never once.
I also second the snack suggestion. If I am working out afterwork - I will have a small balanced snack that has good carbs and protein about 2 hours before my run.0 -
I didn't read the other posters, so I am sorry if this is a repeat- but try doing it in the morning. I exercised in the morning for the whole first year I exercised. It was over early, I felt accomplished and it helped me to control how much I could eat in a day.
I started exercising at night (and still do in the mornings) only after I made exercise a part of my life. When I could trust I would go no matter how cold, tired, lazy, exhausted I felt.0 -
I start work at 7am, but my work is an hour away from home so I am up at 4:45 every day and work till 5 ;-) I have my workout gear with me, and put it on straight after work and don't go home untill I have done a walk / run along the river or gone to the gym. If I am starving, I head home, have a snack at the kitchen bench and head into the spare room and pop on a dvd. Its just about getting started - the fun starts when you break your first sweat. This is all a mind game, nothing to do with tired or moody or whatever excuse people have. In the words of NIKE - Just do it. Don't allow yourself to think of an excuse before you start your workout. Hope this helps you establish your own routine0
