Get two - one winter-weight and one summer-weight.

My rule of thumb is I don't buy anything until I need it. Helps prevent impulse buying, particularly at Home Depot.
I can't think of anything I would actually need a suit for any time in the next few years. I think I may have one sport coat that fits again. :)

If not gray, navy would work as well. I agree with skipping the black suit.

A subtle pinstripe is awesome. Not a thick white pinstripe all gangster style.

    Suits...
My first "suit" was issued by the Army. The Class A uniform which is basically a suit with lots of pretty medals on it.

The pant leg broke just at the instep of the foot.
The jacket was able to fit my forearm in between my chest and the breast of the jacket with very little room to spare.

I now own several suits. Mostly cotton as it is more breathable down here in Florida.
I stay away from white however, light brown, dark green and obviously a few greys and blues with one black.
I have discovered that the real key is the shirts and ties.
I have probably 40 different ties and a simple change of tie color can make the entire suit look different.

Having a suit is useful, but if you don't need one right now, and you're losing weight, it seems a bit of a silly purchase. Personally I would wait until you either need one, or you're at your goal weight.

Single-breasted for sure. Invest in a nice, classic suit that you will have for a long time, so don't go for any extreme lapels or collar. Please no elbow patches. :-P

Maybe google images of Tim Gunn or Barney Stinson for inspiration? Those men know how to wear a suit!

Have to disagree with you on this. 3-button is too NFL/NBA. 2-Button is timeless and can be used everywhere, any time.

Nothing sexier than a man in a well-fitted suit. Avoid double-breasted suits - they add weight.

Definitely! Every guy needs at least one suit. You just never know the events or occasions to which you may be called. As for me? I have 3 suits in my closet. Black, grey (with thin and barely noticeable stripes) and dark brownish. I love to wear the brown one in the fall, complete with an argyle sweater vest and dark tie...or my blue or grey sweater vest and a plaid tie. May look a bit school boy, but it looks good. Add brown shoes and bam!

The grey suit pops the instant I add a light pink shirt underneath and the black suit instantly makes me feel like James Bond the moment I wear it. Every man needs a suit, especially if it makes him feel like James Bond.

Besides, women love suits and they'll tell you that it's because you look so handsome. That may be so, but honestly, I think they all like to open intricately wrapped gifts and the moment you show up gift-wrapped in a suit they're already thinking about getting you alone after dinner. Every girl likes a present. ;)

Never know when you might have an awesome interview come up or worst case a funeral.

Nothing worse than a funeral and you having to go out shopping for something appropraite to wear when that's the last thing you feel like doing.....
  • Chicks dig dudes in suits!

I have about 6 (including the one I got married in).

This weekend the wife and I are going out, and I plan on rocking one.

    Chicks dig it!

Joseph A Banks is always having sales--they are decent quality suits if you just need a suit to have in your closet. Their styles are pretty timeless; however they don't have a ton of variety. The other downfall is if you need extensive tailoring, we've found that their in-house service is usually lacking. My brother is a weightlifter and has a very athletic body--his tailoring is a nightmare!
