At the risk of sounding like a condescending grammar Nazi ...
I feel compelled to point out that we all want to LOSE weight to make our clothes become LOOSE. We don't want to LOOSE weight.
Thanks, that feels better now!

YOU HORRIBLE GRAMMAR NAZI!!! *GASP*
Yes, it is kind of annoying and I have noticed it is a common mishap but I can live through it. Even though it does bug me I can live with the wrong usage of words like "Lose" and "Loose" better than I can live with people making their sentences in shorthand. An example from my Facebook wall; "People gone talk n run they mouth regardless of a situation so if ur w8tn for tha day where I give a d*** u might as well hold ur breath..." <~~~~ That's not even as bad as what I've seen but when I see crap like that it takes me longer to read it than if every word were spelled out properly rather than in shorthand.0 -
Oh I completely understand your frustration (notice - not you're). I get annoyed about them all, loose/lose, its/it's and obviously fewer/less. I should also say that aluminum looks silly to me (aluminium is the way to go) but I can understand that is it a cultural thing.0
-
I worry about all that weight that people are letting loose.
With it running around free, heaven alone knows where it might end up. I definitely don't want it coming here. I have enough trouble stopping my own from finding its way back home without other peoples getting in on the act too.
Other annoyances are:
To instead of too
Seperate instead of separate
Definate instead of Definite
no doubt others can think of others - I do wish that those other others would spare a thought for others' sensibilities - and as for apostrophic succession, let's just not go there0 -

Hear, hear! (As opposed to here, here - which I was recently subjected to on FB.)0

At least he used an apostrophe correctly.0 -
That's a pet peeve of mine. It's LOSE, not LOOSE! But I try not to go all grammar-nazi on people.0

Me too. In my head I'm screaming, but on the outside I'm quiet and just read on.0 -
Ok people, put the words in quotes that you are comparing with each other. "British" should be capitalized.
AND
Aside from this being more rehashed than any other topic on this board with the possible exception of "why are people so negative they should just quit being such *kitten* and agree with me, then I'd think they are positive", I'd note a couple reasons for a wee bit of patience for those you find to be less intelligent than your erudite selves:
Several people here are not native speakers of English. I venture to bet, even with the lack of subject and verb agreement, their English is far superior to your French, or Hindi, or Spanish, or Farsi, or whatever else.
Also, several people here are communicating by way of phone or tablet with ignorant auto-correct and difficult ability to return back to what has already been entered so as to edit before submitting. Also, brace yourself, sometimes people use incomplete sentences on purpose.
But congratulations on noticing other people's ignorance and pointing it out. Or is that something that should be congratulated?0 -

My mum is an english teacher, so she would become visibly apoplectic at anyone who misuses her beloved English. She definitely becomes a grammar nazi.0 -

Thank you!!!!! I AM a grammar nazi, and have wanted to say that for a LONG time!0 -
My son carries a marker pen and a Tippex - and he's not afraid to use it!
Beware any green grocers with "New Potato's"0 -

Seriously? This thread has been unbearably high, yet dead, horse from post one. And a person who is going to position himself or herself as the arbiter of what is or is not ignorant may want to get their APA style manuals out before criticizing.0 -
Yea I see this a lot and it drive me bananas but I don't want to be that guy on the internet so I let it slide.0

I don't mean to appear to be critising, but what has the Animal Protection Agency to do with this issue, unless you're concerned for the welfare of the horse, of course. I thought it was metaphorical
edited to round up a ' that got loose0 -
Our Jiffy Lube has a sign up that reads:
Your looking at the sign of quality.
NO. I am looking at bad grammar.0 -

Yes but getting annoyed at people is a fundamental human right. If some dog took a dump on your doorstep would you not get annoyed because some people are ignorant of the fact that it is wrong to do that? I should also say that this thread is only a light hearted gripe forum as opposed to a demand for public executions of people who can't use apostrophes.
As an example, I'm annoyed at you for using the American form of criticise and also daring to mention the APA style manual.
Shhhhaaammmmmeee0 -
Hugh looks like he's been around a while, so I'm going to assume he was feigning ignorance of the point of a Style Manual for the purpose of wit with regard to the metaphorical horse. I'm assuming anyone bold enough to criticize someone else's use of written language is familiar with a Style Manual, at least from college. APA is one. There is a Chicago Manual of Style, etc. They provide the agreed upon rules for written work--from term papers to newspaper reporting.
Which really does beg the point: do we need to follow formal rules of written language in a forum like this? Or is it enough to get the point across in a casual, informal community like this. I'd vote for the latter. I'd hate for us to have to remember which numbers must be spelled out and which may use numerals when we're talking about such gravely important subjects as whether men like women with muscles or not.0 -
The only reason that I care is that every single time I read the word correctly in my head, realize the sentance does not make sense, then have to translate the meaning for myself. Its gotten to the point where I just stop reading and move to another topic when I see the error.0

Those so bold as to correct others may be well advised to thicken their skin for the inevitable criticism they will earn.0 -
I'm not shure that this thread will have the affect your looking fore.0

2. I have no idea what an "APA" is let alone an "APA style manual" - my degree is in dental surgery
3. Using the correct word and not a totally different spelling of a word with a completely disparate meaning is NOT, in my opinion, following "formal rules of written language" [sic]. It merely displays ignorance - which may,of course, be the the result of poor education rather than lack of intelligence or care.
4. I prefer women to have some muscles as I am too old to be trying to pick them up.
5. I am not aware of anyone starting a thread on whether men like women with muscles.
Best wishes
PS why don't Americans write 'criticism' with a Zed? (i.e. 'criticizm') - Oh? because it would look silly, I suppose0 -

That's it, I am forming an army of people with tippex, or the digital equivalent. We shall rid the world of these grammar fouling... dogs. We shall call ourselves "The League of jetscreaminag" after out founder, who demanded that we humiliate anyone who puts loose instead of lose. I can see it now:
I am going to loose 5 pounds
Our crest will be a man being paralysed with an APA manual.
THE FUTURE STARTS NOW!!!!
Oh my god, I have used too many exclamation marks! Please don't turn on me!
No! Not the manual! Forgive me jetscreaminag!
BLARK.
(That is the closest sound I can make of someone being smacked with a book)0
