Why does breakfast suck?

Don't get me wrong here, I LOVE breakfast, but I'm the type that loves all the wrong things: sugary cereal, waffles, pancakes, etc. When it comes to liking the healthy alternatives (eggs, oatmeal, etc), well....not so much. I can take eggs sometimes (scrambled) but after a while, they honestly start making me gag. And oatmeal? Don't get me STARTED on oatmeal..... >:C
I have started eating yogurt with fruit and a bit of toast but was wondering if anyone else had any ideas on breakfast meals that don't involve eggs or oatmeal (preferably cold and low on the carb side) that still sticks to a healthy diet? Maybe an ethnic dish or something that most people don't think of?

I have no problem eating nontraditional foods for breakfast: leftover stir fry, tuna on a toasted english muffin, soup, etc. No one says you have to eat eggs or cereal just because it is 7 am!0

PB&J, grilled cheese, bagels.. Im a big fan on carbs for breakfast lol. Do you like any non-sugary cereal? I really like shreddies and rice krispies and eat them regularly too.0

What's up with oatmeal? Is it a texture thing? If yes, try some steel cut oats .... not as gluey, and no baby food texture.
Anyway, instant or rolled (old fashioned) oats are "pre-cooked" .... so you can eat these COLD. Mix into your yogurt the night before or use "as is" in a smoothie. Try toasting a batch of dry oats ... then adding to your yogurt ... adds a nutty flavor.
There are savory oatmeal recipes too ..... I'm not a fan .... but I've seen these (somewhere).
Non-oatmeal .....I mix cereal into flavored yogurt (try grapenuts ... mmm crunchy).
Cottage cheese has good protein numbers. Try string cheese & hard boiled eggs.0 -
There's no rule that says you have to eat traditional breakfast food for breakfast. I often have dinner leftovers for breakfast. Sometimes a salad or a tuna sandwich. Soup is good too. Pizza. You get the idea.0

I usually start every morning with 16 oz of cold water. Its supposed to help kick start your metabolism. Then i will go for a cereal bar like the ones nature valley or cliff makes. I have found this combination to be light and keep me going easily until lunch. The bars are fairly high in carbs but if you are going to be active between breakfast and lunch its good to spike the blood sugar a bit.0

How about adding protein to your pancakes or waffles? That's the only way we make them anymore (weekends). We use vanilla ice cream protein powder and they're so yummy.0

Porridge oats made with rice milk/semi skimmed milk and water, topped with brown sugar, almond butter, strawberries/blueberries and banana - fantastic.
Love it so much, love it love it love it! Even better after a 10K run!

Chipotle chicken with cheese and sour cream is awesome for breakfast. The only thing it needs is eggs!0

First: screw oatmeal. I have many reasons for saying this, but I'll drop a single example: show me one person who is in the 5-7% BF range who eats oatmeal.
Second: stop thinking 'breakfast foods'. My breakfast a couple of days ago was a quarter of a pound of chicken breast, and 3 oz. of shrimp.0 -

Exactly this. I have soup for breakfast sometimes.
Its just another meal, you don't have to stick to any particular formula.0 -

Me too.
Leftover Chinese is the best breakfast, not on a diet but...cold Chinese is good.0 -
Here's a few suggestions from my own breakfasts:
Protein shakes (loaded with berries, banana, soymilk or whatever is on hand)
Rice cakes/toast with peanut butter
Yogurt with some apple sauce mixed in
Healthy-style muffins (I'll bake a big batch ahead of time so I have one for each morning).0 -

^^^^ this, eat whatever you want. Just have something to get you moving. I stay away from high carbs as they seem to tire me out quickly. But what is wrong with steak, soup, tuna, stir fry, I would rather eat larger in the early hours than later at night. Gives me time to burn it off.0 -
I love breakfast it is my easiest meal all day, and I eat the sma ething everyday I actually eat it on my ride to work - I microwave two servings of egg beaters with a little shredded cheese, and a little jimmy dean Turkey sausage crumbles, on a whole wheat sandwhich thin with a little spray butter it is delish!0

I love my smoothies for breakfast. I always have some spinach, protein powder, and silk unsweetened almond milk in there. After that some kind of fruit...bananas, berries, mango, whatever. And sometimes I add peanut butter cause I just love it.0

Breakfast smoothies (peanut butter and banana), homemade oatmeal with rolled oats (much better texture) made with any kind of flavours add-ins (peanut butter and banana!), and scrambled eggs with SALSA! on top. I used to hate breakfast, but I have since found my way around these foods to make them palatable to me. A fried egg with avocado on a slice of sprouted toast is really good. Or do a grilled peanut butter and fruit (mashed banana, slices of peach, mashed raspberries, whatever) sandwich on sprouted bread.0

I tell you I have a tough time with breakfast but the other morning I got a Wake-up wrap with eggwhites, cheese and ham form Dunkin' Donut's and it was awesome...
http://www.dunkindonuts.com/content/dunkindonuts/en/menu/food/sandwiches/breakfastsandwiches/wakeup_wrap.html
Very reasonable in terms of the nutritional elements, not like a HUGE breakfast sandwich and it was under $2.00. I was satisfied as all hell!0 -
I am a lucky charms kinda girl, I could eat the whole box no problem.....mmmmm.
But I just eat 2 cups of Special K red berries...and it kinda grows on you after a while. It fills me up too. Ill make egg white omelets on my non lifting days, bc its lower calorie....but on days where I can afford a bit more carbs...Id rather have a refreshing bowl of cereal.0 -
I often have toast and peanut butter.0

Wow, thanks for all the useful suggestions everyone!
And mostly, to expand on the oatmeal hate: its the bland, hot and "mooshiness" that bothers me. It just makes me crazy! But I will have to try the steel oats; I think it takes away a lot of the grossness of oatmeal for me.
Also, to the peeps that are saying "eat whatever you would for the other parts of the day and don't think of it as breakfast", I can see what you meant, but I don't know what it is but I really need something "breakfasty" in the morning or I feel a bit robbed. Breakfast used to be one of the major meals in my day ( I would usually skip lunch) so it would just feel weird to me to "skip" eating something breakfast related and go straight to something I would eat for lunch or dinner.
I can definitely get behind the smoothies, toast and peanut butter though!0 -
I have changed my mind on oatmeal after a couple changes.
I am a big advocate of savory oatmeal.'
My favorite recipes with some raisins sprinkled on top.

Sometimes I'll be lazy and make the pre-made cinnamon stuff, but add a tablespoon of peanut butter and marionberry jam (any jam will do). So yummy and comforting.
Bananas and peanut butter go together so well. I'll eat a banana smothered in pb when I'm short on time..
I'm not a big fan of the texture of eggs either, but I've started mixing them with a tablespoon of cottage cheese and it makes the texture smoother to me. Tons of salsa makes anything better anyways.
I just bought a new cookbook: I Can't Believe It's Not Fattening and they have a bunch of great breakfast recipes like breakfast fried rice and cheese and olive omelets. On Amazon you can get some of the recipes without buying the book.
Have fun with breakfast!0 -
As someone suggested earlier, I like to have steel cut oatmeal made with vanilla almond milk.. soooo good compared to making it with water or normal milk.
I also like turkey sausages
eggs on whole wheat tortillas
Avocado (but I love avocado anytime and anywhere.. even just plain)
English muffin with cottage cheese and turkey bacon (yeah I'm weird, I have the pallette of a poor college student).
If I'm not feeling solid foods sometimes I'll make a protein shake with non flavored almond milk.
Also lefts overs from the night before have been known to makes its way into my belly in the mornings. Brown rice is good with eggs (imo).0 -
I really super badly want to try these pumpkin cornbread waffles

Why don't you want to eat pancakes and waffles for breakfast if you like them?0 -
breakfast is overrated.
i like to use mine later and eat MORE
whatever makes you happy.0 -
It's not cold, but BACON!!!! It's good for you in moderation and actually if you get low sodium bacon it tastes the same without all the salt.
If you are crafty in the kitchen you could make some low carb muffins or something like that.
Special K Protein Plus is high in protein but pretty low in calories. It tastes like slightly sweetened bran cereal. I describe it as raisin bran without the raisins!0 -
My breakfast EVERY DAY (high-ish cals; I like a big breakfast, I'm on maintenance at the moment and I usually have a lot of extra exercise cals too)
- Half a frozen banana, chopped up
- 4 large (frozen?) strawberries, chopped up
- Handful of mixed (frozen?) raspberries/blackberries/blueberries
- Half a cup or a whole cup of nonfat greek yogurt
- About a cup of various types of cereal (I like to mix them up, at the moment it's a bit of special k red berries, some cheerios and some all bran)
- Between half a cup and a cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- Half a scoop of vanilla protein powder (for the sweetness/flavour as much as for the protein :P)
It's CRAZY good, incredibly filling and nutritionally very balanced (as well as carbs/protein it gives a super hit of fiber, vitamins and iron depending on which cereal you use). Good for before a morning workout! It usually comes out at about 400 calories, but can go up pretty dramatically depending on the type/amount of cereal used.0 -
flourless protein pancakes-1 egg, 1 banana, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter (or any nut butter). Mix together and fry batter like you would actual pancakes. Great texture and taste!!! I eat em with fruit slices and yogurt, but you can use normal syrup as well.0

Granola with raisens and yoghurt atm, however I love cereal bars even though they are packed with sodium.. the chocolatey ones like Alpen Coconut and Choc - sadly ontop on the sodium they also don't fill me up much0
