Something that worked for me (it's been over one year) was switching to menthol (which I hated) and I slowly just stopped wanting to smoke whatsoever, if menthol was my only option. Took one week. Haven't looked back (had been a smoker for 20 yrs).
Good luck. It's doable...I had tried patches, acupuncture, gum, prescriptions, etc. Nothing worked until I bought that back of menthols (I was marlboro lights girl).0 -
Sadly smoking does not affect my workouts. I smoke one before the gym and one almost right after. I've become better at running. I wish it would affect my workouts and then it would maybe give me more incentive to quit. Right now I simply do not want to quit badly enough.
You wont realize how much it effects you till you quit. You may not be pushing yourself hard enough if at all...
That is a good point, but right now I am pushing as hard as it will allow. I certainly did not come in here to have someone tell me I may not be pushing hard enough.
amen. im still taking my workouts to a new level on a weekly basis. my smoking hasnt hindered it at all. i push myself hard, and am dripping with sweat at the end of my 800 cal gym sessions. how is going to the gym 2 hours each day and working straight through not pushing myself, especially since ive only been working out for only a month??
Arent we being a little sensitive. Didnt mean to bruise anyones fragile "im a workout god even though i smoke" ego. Anywho, the point was that your body has no idea how far it can acutally go because your smoking self can do about 30% of what your non smoking self can do.
FROM EXPERIENCE! the same workout that made me sweat before only now feels like a little warm up. that was my point.

I may have been a little overly sensitive, no crying here though. I stated that I do understand what you are saying, but with that said I am not at a point of wanting to quit. I most certainly shouldn't quit right now, while being overly emotional and sensitive.
How exactly did you go about quitting? I know most men quit cold turkey.
I quit using nicotine patches and weed. I thought i said that already?
The nicotine patches took the edge off, the weed helped my mind not dwell on cigarettes.
After i was off the patch compelely for 3 weeks, i reduced the weed. I still smoke week when i work out, but thats pretty much it. I'm really not a "pot head" i'm way to smart and functional to be considered a "stoner" perse.

I'm terrible about not reading others posts, so I must of went right over it. I've tried the nicotine patch before, but it burned/itched my arm. Maybe if I want to quit badly enough, then it could possible help me. I can see exactly how weed would help, I use to be a pot head. Funny it was easy to stop smoking weed, but not the cigarettes.

yea again, it helps my mind not focus on how bad this 3 mile run sucks, or whatever. I smoke, turn on some nice metal or house music and get to work. I go longer and my actual movements are more centered becuase i "enjoy the movement" itself more.
I had the same problem w/ the patches. i put them on my back instead. they itch, but it goes away. the skin on your back is thicker and tougher.0 -
It is hard. I need to lose another 100 pounds, and just that thought makes me have a cigarette. Lolz. I do, eventually, want to quit smoking as well. I think, for right now, I'm just going to tackle one thing at a time. For now, it's weight loss. Once that's all done, I'll tackle smoking. And, once I pack on 20 pounds from quitting smoking, I'll tackle getting rid of those 20 pounds again. Hahaha. It's a vicious cycle. But, we can do it. Being overweight AND smoking is cutting YEARS out of our lives.0

But you keep on stereotyping and assuming that someone who smokes must be the epitome of poor health, and therefore shouldn't bother losing weight. After all, stereotypes are fun.

If it's straight about vanity then go for it. I don't see the point if your logic behind losing weight is to be healthier. You may weight less but you still smoke and are still unhealthy because of it. It's just another way to destroy your body.0 -
I'm one of those people who just doesn't get why people say it's so hard. How hard is it to stop sticking something into your face and lighting it? (smoked off and on for more than 20 years; easy to start; easy to stop) I haven't smoked in about 10 years now. It made me feel yucky.

exactly. I work out because I got flippen fat and my clothes didnt fit anymore. a lot of people have a lot of reasons for working out. and how am I not healthier? I may still light up, but im in better shape then I was a year ago!0 -

i smoked for many years. my smoking was a juggling act. sometimes i would smoke none, other times i would smoke 2 packs a day. i rarely ever smoked at home unless i was alone and bored. i use to smoke 3 each way to work. but then i bought a new car and stopped smoking on my drives. but i would smoke 2 each break i had at work, 2 at lunch and try and smoke one after work.
if i was drinking i smoked way more. when i had a job that allowed me to smoke while working i smoked way more. the company i work for now doesn't allow smoking like that. so its limited to breaks. which like i said cut me down to 6 or so a day at work. but then something big happened in my life. i got into a 4 wheeler accident and had trouble walking. i almost died and rightfully should have. but it hurt so much to move and walk that i wasn't going to walk outside for a smoke. after a week my walking was better but i figured it had already been a week i would see how this plays out.
that was july 1st of this year. next thursday will be 4 full months without a puff. but i must say i took a break from this place while i had my accident and was quitting. i still ate "healthy" i just didn't limit myself like i do now. i also hung around people who smoked. i grew friendships with people who smoked. today i dont see those people as much as i did then. i cant tell you the last time i walked out for break to talk to the guys while they smoked. i cut the temptation right out of it.
now today i went to lunch with two coworkers who do smoke. i was in the middle of the truck while they smoked to lunch and back. i got to work and my shirt smells like smoke. it makes me sick to think this is how i smelled ALL THE TIME. i find myself now not being able to stand the smell of it anymore. but i was ready to make that commitment. you really have to want it.0 -

I LOVE TO SMOKE. And i havent bought cigs in 4 months. I got a PV, or personal vaporizer. I get the EXACT same feeling and habit and benefits of smoking, with no cancer, bad smell, or anything else. The only reason a doctor would recommend you to have these types of test is if he or she thought something was wrong. It's not something you just go and have done.0 -
I am a litle under a pack a day smoker. I HATE it, my fiance hates it (he just up and quit a year ago), and i know its holding me back on my exersise.
I have a horrible addiction problem, always have. It runs in the family. I've tried to quit, but have failed each time. It just scares me because i noticed every time i cut back i found myself snacking all the time trying to hold back the cravings. I just dont think i can handle trying to eat right and quit somking at the same time.
Has anyone eles been through this?????

Think about it.. if you are doing this as a lifestyle change.. why not use your lifestyle to test it? PART of your life are the changes that go along with it... life.. death.. habits.. things change. You will experience many things and they will ALL test you and your ability to control your food. SO, better quit NOW while you are learning to control it...
Im a former smoker, and I just want to put out there, dont expect miracles.. You do NOT feel better right after you quit smoking. It takes almost a year before you start to feel better. Infact, you feel WORSE at first. This is normal, and it WILL get better, but like everything it takes time. Good luck, you can do it!!!0 -
I switched to the e-cigarette almost 6 months ago so technically still a nicotine addict but I do consider that I've quit smoking and so do my doctors. Doesn't have the same hold on me as cigarettes did and I often forget I even own the thing, definitely use it less now than I did when I first stopped smoking. My lung capacity is probably twice what it was, I smell great all the time and between my husband and myself we have saved about $1800!!
I also recommend reading the Easyway to Quit Smoking by Alan Carr, which is really more tailored to cold turkey quits, but for me it really helped pinpoint the reasons I wanted to quit and give me motivation, changing my thinking about smoking. I realized I was rushing through things and not enjoying them as much so I could get to my "breaktime" where I would go have a cigarette. Just getting out of that cycle had so many mental rewards for me I can't believe it.
I didn't worry about what I was eating for a couple months but exercise was a huge help to keep me calm. Also, lots of presents from me to me, every day without a cigarette is a reason to celebrate. For most people, I think you not only have to want it, you have to want it more than just about anything else. Good luck whenever you are ready!!0 -
I smoked for a long time and the thing that made me realize I HAD to quit for good was when I started riding my bike a lot. (I moved to the city and sold my car for a nice bike.) Genetically my lungs are shot anyway, so if I had even just a couple cigarettes the day BEFORE, I was huffing and puffing when I got on my bike the next day. And I LOVE riding my bike! So when it came down to it, that was my mental motivation. Maybe find a physical activity that you really, really enjoy but smoking makes difficult, and just keep doing it because every time it serves as a reminder of how much healthier and happier you will be once you quit. As far as the snacking goes, the habit of oral fixation is something you just have to work through. Maybe try chewing gum, or eating a hard candy (a family friend of ours quit with Jolly Ranchers lol), just until you can get past that first hump of craving a cigarette.
Edit: The other thing that really helped me was surrounding myself with people that didn't smoke. Turns out I was mostly just a social smoker haha, and seeing someone else light up always made me want one. I tended to forget about smoking completely if I was alone and preoccupied with something else!0 -

it is mind over matter. It is that simple. Your mind is FAR more powerful than your body. If you want it bad enough in your mind, you'll do it. It doesn't matter what your physical body thinks it needs, you brain will tell your body to shut up and knock it off. it is a fact. this is why placebos work. the mind is amazingly powerful.
This is what I meant; that the mind is stronger than the physical addiction. I didn't say there is no physical addition. I know it exists. i smoked for many many years. I understand all this very well. I am saying that once you turn your brain on to the fact that you are not going to smoke anymore, you simply will stop doing it. It really is that simple. the fact that you slide back into smoking is because you got weak because you did not have your brain on full beast mode. Seriously folks. Don't play victim. Addiction is a mental game way more than it is physical. Way more. The miond is far more powerful than your body. Your mind dictates everything.0 -
I'm going to ignore the crazy conflict on this thread so far and add my opinion...
i've always been relatively active in terms of competitive cheerleading, basketball, badminton, zumba every week etc. (not a 'work out' person, at least not yet!) I smoked for two years (6 odd a day, sometimes sneaking up to 10) and quit nearly three weeks ago. It was actually SO much easier than I thought, genuinely. I've got quite good willpower anyway, but it's just about not giving in to what you think you want- it's very similar to wanting to eat a mountain of chocolate hehe. I did slip up a few days into quitting, smoked half a cigarette, felt the horrible ache and heaviness in my chest that I hadn't had for a couple of days, and threw it without finishing it. It's not the cigarettes I miss but the routine (eg. morning one with a cup of tea, bedtime one etc.) but replace them with HEALTHIER things like a walk (: I've noticed the difference already in terms of being more capable with exercising, no more heavy breathing, no coughing fits, it's awesome. You don't need to rely on unhealthy snacking to get you through it, the decision to quit smoking is on the same track as getting fit and healthy.

It's exactly like dieting. As long as you are head-strong and you just keep your head in the game, eat clean and work hard, you'll be great. It's those weak moments when it gets you. Or, when you reach a goal and then think you can slack off, like I did recently. I never say it's easy. I just think that the mind os stonger than any physical reality. But, easier said than done, I know. I quit smoking, and a year later, quit drinking. I know all about this stuff. I'm just taht much of a friggin prick to be able to stop when I finally decide. I am a head-strong SOB. It comes in handy at times. Other times, it's nto such a good thing. LOL.0 -

I understand all this very well. I am saying that once you turn your brain on to the fact that you are not going to smoke anymore, you simply will stop doing it. It really is that simple. the fact that you slide back into smoking is because you got weak because you did not have your brain on full beast mode. Seriously folks. Don't play victim. Addiction is a mental game way more than it is physical. Way more. The miond is far more powerful than your body. Your mind dictates everything.
This worked for me once before. I told myself -practically hypnotized myself- that I do not smoke cigarettes anymore. It worked for about three weeks, then I quit believing myself.
I know. That's the hardest part. Your mind strength has to outlive your physical need.
It's exactly like dieting. As long as you are head-strong and you just keep your head in the game, eat clean and work hard, you'll be great. It's those weak moments when it gets you. Or, when you reach a goal and then think you can slack off, like I did recently. I never say it's easy. I just think that the mind os stonger than any physical reality. But, easier said than done, I know. I quit smoking, and a year later, quit drinking. I know all about this stuff. I'm just taht much of a friggin prick to be able to stop when I finally decide. I am a head-strong SOB. It comes in handy at times. Other times, it's nto such a good thing. LOL.
I don't think it's like dieting at all. The only reason that I gained a bunch of weight is because I knew very little about nutrition/calories and never paid attention to what I ate. (Also I started working in an office instead of being on my feet all the time.) Now that I am tracking my food, it's very easy to lose weight. I don't see that applying to me at all.
I can be pretty headstrong. I have stopped doing a lot of things that I used to do that were harmful. But nothing has ever been like quitting smoking.0 -
How are you doing with the smoking? Thinking of you and other friends I've known who have battled that craving. Hope you are getting LOTS of support. If it gets to be too much of a desire ...find and use all the help you can. Talk with your care providers, friends, family. You can use it all! You, your home, and your future children deserve a happy you without cigs!0
