So, can anyone recommend good facial cleanser?

I have tried everything on my face, but the acne on my chin is being horribly stubborn, and it's so embarassing. I'm 33 years old, and am about to get ready to try ProActiv as a last resort....thoughts? Anyone?

  • I've struggled with acne ever since I was 19 - after having my daughter. As a teenager (pre-kids) I had gorgeous skin. Then my hormones went all whackadoodle on me. So now I'm 32 and I still deal with it along my jawline, mainly, and chin. I've seen several derms and docs and they all say the same thing - it's hormonal. There is nothing you can wash your face with or apply to make it positively stop. ProActiv didn't work for me. Hell, Accutane - several rounds- didn't work for me (it did temporarily but after I stopped, a few months later it came back - though not the cystic kind, thankfully). Sooo, all that to say - it's likely a hormonal issue. I take spironolactone now to help with mine, but it's not 100% effective either. :( Fkn hormones.

It started pretty much the second I went off birth control after getting my tubes tied, so thats logical. I should go back on it just for that reason alone. Ugh. I feel so gross, I don't want to look in the mirror!

Same for me as what Dizzle said...I was on Accutane from 15 to 19...it screwed me up...I stopped and have tried every over the counter product out there. Acne is generally a hormonal issue, so if you really want to attack it, see a dermatologist and get their opinion. Im currently on Spironolactone and for the most part, my skin stays clear. I'm also on birth control but it really doesn't make much of a difference for me personally. It acts up during TOM, or when I'm stressed of course...I also notice that for me, my skin looks best when I'm eating a well balanced diet and not a huge amount of dairy.

As far as cleaning my skin, I keep it simple..color free, fragrance free...I use the Purpose products, as recommended by my dermatologist. Affordable stuff available at Walmart, CVS, etc.

In this country, you can just go to see your doctor and they can give you stuff. Few people do though.

I only get spots due to stress or lack of sleep (which is caused by stress).

I use Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask from Neutrogena. It has benzoyl peroxide as a main ingredient. My Dr. prescribed just benzoyl peroxide for me, and then I discovered this. Works awesomely, but the problem is a few days after you stop, up comes the acne again. :explode:

I had terrible skin from my early teens right up to my 40's when I started using Eve Lom cleanser. It sounds counter intuative to cleans very oily skin with oil, but it works. Breakouts stopped within a couple of months and now I only get the very odd zit at TOM.
I've since switched to Liz Earle Hot Cloth Cleanser, thanks to getting some as a gift, and it works just as well but costs a lot less!

I feel your pain, I am going through that too, my Dr. said acne on the chin is usually hormonal, so if you went off pill , could be they are out of order possibly, Ishe prescribed me some antibiotics, and some cream, seem to help alot. As for a cleaner , I am too still on the search for a good one , cetaphil is pretty good.
  • Lye soap works well. Just don't get it in your eyes.

I just started using Arbonne products, I love them. I am a little bit of a face product *kitten* and really spend time researching these products. This range is a little pricy, but well worth the money.

My friend just started his own business creating home-grown beauty supplies. I bought some rosemary astringent (toner) and I don't know if it has reduced acne (I don't have a whole lot to begin with) but it has made my face feel good and it smells incredible. :)

I'll msg it to you since I don't think the rules allow me to post it here. :)

I've been using this lately and really like it (plus the scrublet seems to help): http://www.amazon.com/LOreal-Paris-Exfoliating-Natural-Apricot/dp/B002PBCAEQ

I tend to change up my brands every few months because my skin will get used to them so I also use this: http://www.clinique.com/product/1572/8279/3_step/Step_1_Cleanse/Liquid-Facial-Soap/index.tmpl (and they usually carry travel sizes at the stores)

I considered Proactiv once but it seemed pretty harsh so I used this instead: http://www.acjuva.com/ I like that it's all natural and it never felt crazy harsh on my sensitive skin. The only reason I stopped is because I have to remember to order it and I never do so I end up picking up the Clinique or L'Oreal at the store.

Have you tried Mary Kay? I had horrible adult acne years ago, and I started using their formula for oily skin. It took a couple of weeks to clear everything out, but I have had so much better skin since then (a few years ago I was broke and tried using something from the drugstore, and starting breaking out again). They have a couple of different options now - botanicals, anti-aging, etc.
You find a consultant at www.marykay.com

Considering it got really bad when you went off birth control, I'm inclined to agree that it's hormonal. I know some people use birth control specifically to help with acne.

    She said she tried everything.
  • I would recommend visiting Sephora. They have a bunch of cleansers from cheap to expensive and they can help you pick out a good one. I did this a few months ago and my face is so much easier to maintain (even when I'm on my period).

I've tried ProActiv and while it's good for the first few weeks - for we at least - it always ends up being too harsh and too drying.

i had the same problem with my chin and nose. i tried proactiv and it didn't work. I now use this product from France: La Therapie Emulsion Purifiante Toutes Peaux by timetospa. you can find it on Amazon.com. IT IS AMAZING!!! my face has never been so clear and bright. IT is sooooo SOFT to the touch now. I highly recommend it! make sure you squeeze all of the blackheads, zits whatever you may have then try it. leave it on your face for 3-5 minutes then wash off. the first time i used it i was like OMG!!! this is amazing! it runs around $35 for a 5 oz bottle.

    Good luck!!!

I have been using soap and glory face wash and it helps with the scarring too. cant remember the name, but it is the green gel with little pinky/orange beads in. I am 31 and still get the odd spots, mainly around TOM, very annoying!

Dermalogica stuff is really good too, I like their anti-bac face wash and the micro-exfolliant.

I've had good results with Neutrogena pink grapefruit washes and scrubs. Also, St. Ives Apricot scrub. And I've found that changing my pillowcases more often and drinking more water has helped too.

I've had oily skin and acne problems ever since I was a teen. And, I remember way back when, a dermatologist once telling me that I will actually appreciate my oily skin when I am older because I'll look younger than everyone else. He was right, so take some comfort in that. :flowerforyou:

I' m 31 and just started getting acne problems about a year ago, WTF.

I really like Neutrogena...it's blue and has scrubbies in it. I can't remember the name, but it's the only blue scrubby stuff I have seen by them. Once a week I use apricot scrub too, just to get rid of dead skin cells.
For moisturizer, I use Aveeno Clear Complexion or Retinol Cream from Vitamin World, it's like $6.

I have learned that consistency is key! I will get lazy sometimes and not wash my face before bed. That's when I get breakouts (although this never happened until a year ago). You should probably get into a routine of washing your face in the AM, after your workout, and before bed. That should clear it up in no time.

Please Please Please do your research before purchasing ProActive. My boyfriend purchased it and they kept sending him a new kit each month and it was like pulling teeth to get the charges refunded and for them to stop sending more ProActive.
I used it also, and after the 2nd or 3rd day, my face was on FIRE! Then a day later, the top layer peeled off like I had a sunburn. GROSS! Unless your skin is like leather, it will probably be too drying for you.

    Good luck!!

I never had acne as a teenager and never got any until I was 43. I started using Carley's Clean & Smooth products which I fell in love with! www.clearandsmoothskin.com/ is the link - their products are awesome & they last a long time - I would definitely recommend their product line!!! You can buy it from their site and they sell it on ebay.

About six months ago, my niece started selling Mary Kay so I, too, have to vouch for them. I have very dry skin as I've gotten to be 46, but their dry skin formula made me break out. I switched to normal/oily and it's working out well. I just can't use their sunscreen products - it makes me break out every time I try it. Another product I'm using now is by Rodan+Fields, the same makers of Proactiv. It is very expensive so I only use it every other day - I'm using the product line called "Reverse" and it's clearing up my skin like I can't believe. A friend of mine with bad acne swears by Proactiv and became a seller of the Rodan+Fields products. Good luck!
