I just ran my numbers. I quit cold turkey in February.

I have now stopped smoking for 8 months, 2 weeks, 6 days, 2 hours, 25 minutes, 3 seconds. That translates into 4,387 cigarettes NOT smoked, for a savings of $1,755.08! At 5 minutes per cigarette I have increased my life expectancy by 2 weeks, 1 day, 5 hours, 38 minutes, 33 seconds.

Well done, Sir. I tip my hat to you.

I've quit for 8 days and each day I have put $5.25 in a box inside my desk at work. That way, I know it is always there and I won't spend it on something frivolous like ice cream or candy when I'm out & about. What has been your greatest non-monetary gain since quitting? Mine has been that my skin is already looking more vibrant.

Greatest non-monetary gain.... hmmm... there are many...

    Food tastes better
I feel cleaner - not worried about the smell on my clothes
I can put FAR more effort into exercise
My eye sight isn't any better as such but it feels a bit clearer - hard to explain - like a cloud has been lifted
  • These are all Amazing stories and Congratulations to all of you!! I have 28 days under my belt and couldnt be happier. I am now focusing on getting healthier and HAPPIER!! I am so much happier now that I dont smoke!! And my love of food has gotten healhier!! I am now finding time to excercise and spend more time with my kids!! And yes, the $250.00 I have saved so far, I spent on myself, for one, new clothes!! Yay!!
  • that's awesome! good job!
  • That is so awesome! Great job on quitting, I love how you turned it into such a positive experience. Total polar opposite

I started with nicotine gum at first, but it may have or may not have helped. The only real way to quit is through pure force of will. Put them down and NEVER pick them up again. To this day, a couple years later, I still crave one every so often. I never give in since I know my addictive personality will run with it once I start again.

Wow! That is an amazing story! I am not a smoker but my Husband is. My dream is to see him quit. I hate to see him have such a bad habit. We have a 3 year old Daughter and I want him to live longer for us and it truly breaks my heart to see him just smoke his life away. Do you have any tips on how I can be supportive? He does want to quit but doesn't seem to have the motivation or drive to do so.

From across the pond, I am so proud of you. You are an amazing inspiriation to others and although I do not have a problem with smoking it allows me to take the same front with my emotional eating. My "snacks, junk food, and restaurant" jar start today.

    Thank you

Unfortunately you can't force him to quit, he has to REALLY want to do it.
There is a MASSIVE difference between someone who says they want to quit and one that really wants to quit.
You can only offer the support and encouragement, but not push him into it, it has to be his decision.

Some people just need a wake up moment, that moment changes things forever. Where that moment comes from I am not sure.

I wish my husband would quit! That would be a nice chunk of change, and he wouldn't smell foul anymore.

Thats awesome!!! I just quit 8 days ago and it is still a little bit of a struggle but I am determined. Sadly I wont be able to have 3 grand sitting in a jar because I rolled mine myself so they were actually pretty cheap but I did find this app that tells me how much of my life I have saved and by not smoking for 8 days I have saved 10 hours in my life which if you ask me is priceless :D

Huge congratulations to you, Sir!!! Those stacks of money do look nice!
I have been smoke-free for 9 weeks now. Each payday, I squirrel away $60 (which is actually LESS than what I'd have spent on cigs in a 2-week period) and I'm saving up for a 50" flatscreen tv. I should have it by mid-December. Can't wait!
  • SO many congratulations to you!!! That's amazing that you quit and I'm so glad you did!! You deserve all the praise in the world!

I'm doing the same thing. I'm currently only 5 days in, but I'll be putting the money I would spend on smoking into a jar every day, and at the end of a year I'll have $2,438.40 USD.

I tried quitting before and did the same thing - I *still* have the nearly $500 from that, so I'll add it to the above number and have nearly 3 grand. I'm thinking a trip to Europe or Australia will be in order for my reward. :drinker:

I've been smoke free for about 4 years. That was one healthy step I made before my weight loss journey began 2 years later. Well done for your accomplishment! :drinker:

I am trying to quit myself. I have changed everything in my life accept this BAD habit. Maybe if I did this, I would be more motivated to stick to it. I'm gonna try! Thank you for the fabulous idea!

Great job! My boyfriend and I quit about 3 months ago, also. It's the best thing I ever did and I wish I had done it sooner as it was not nearly as hard as i thought it would be. We have not specifically been saving the money from it, though. Maybe we should.
