Depressed about my starting weight.

I hopped on the scale for the first time in ages and I'm super depressed about the number. I joined the site a few weeks ago and didn't weigh myself because I was afraid what the numbers would say. Turns out I was right to be afraid because I was 20 pounds heavier than I thought I would be, at 240 pounds. I'm super depressed about it. Anybody who can offer encouragement? :-\

You're just starting a journey that will bring a great sense of accomplishment at many points along the way, not just at the final destination.
The higher the number you start with, the better it will feel to see numbers like "10 pounds lost", "25 pounds lost", and "50 pounds lost"0 -
Just start setting small goals and get started. It is better to start now and not wait for the scale to go even higher. Congrats on getting started.0

I used to be almost 400 pounds and could barely walk a mile. I just ran my first full marathon a month ago and have gotten down to my goal weight. It took me years and it wasn't easy, it was worth it.
You can turn this around, it won't be easy and it will take time to lose the weight in a healthy way, but it can be achieved if you put your mind to it.
The hardest part will be the first 30 days imo. Once you get past that and see the results, that should keep you motivated to stay on track. I know for me now if I eat bad, I get really sick and that movitates me now to stay on track.

We all have a starting point...dont worry because now, you will never see that # again, you can watch go down in flames!!!! Congratulations on starting and staying!!!! just remember that number and let it remind you of where you DONT want to be!!! good luck and hope to see less of you each week!!! lol0

I felt the same way. I thought I was around 210, then the scale said I was 226. Ugh! This may not help, but now I can compare my starting place with how far I've come and be proud of that. If I can figure it out I'll send you pics.
Over this last year I hit plateaus, lost motivation, etc. But what is really helping me now is I'm focusing on being healthy and eating clean, and doing an exercise program that I actually like. (Ugh, hours of cardio make me want to cry)

OH Hon I feel your pain! Less than a year ago I started this journey and I too was so afraid to step on that scale... I did it though and with great embarrasment, posted that total that stared back at me on the scale.. It does get better! Honest! MFP is amazing and so are the people that you meet along the way. It's all about hard work and honest posting... Know that you may have a bad day, but stay strong and pick yourself up and do better tomorrow... I began this journey at 330 pounds, I've lost 104 pounds so far with about 65 or 70 more to go! You can do this! Please feel free to add me if you'd like.. I will be around forever, as this is a lifestyle change! Best of luck to you and don't be depressed about that starting weight!

I started at 251 and got to 174 in 5 months. You can do it! It is HARD HARD WORK. Log every single bite you put in your mouth into MFP. Whether it's good or bad. It really shows you where you are eating too much and helps you stay on track. Walk walk walk. Then when you can, run run run. Also highly recommend circuit training, something like Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred to start out. To go from walking to running C25K program really worked for me.0

Every journey begins with a single step. You're on the right track now to make some great changes to your life. The sad fact is that weight loss is a long, boring, frustrating, time-consuming process, whatever your starting weight. It must seem like a huge mountain you have to climb right now, but you really can climb it.
Maybe try to break it down into smaller chunks and have mini-goals to aim for. That helps a lot of people. One thing I've found useful is to track my weight in a spreadsheet and plot it on a graph. (You can also use the graph on MFP, but I prefer my spreadsheet!) Also, have a look in the "success stories" section, if you haven't already, for some motivation. There are so many people on this site that have been exactly where you are now, but have achieved their weight loss goals.
You can definitely do this, and one of the biggest things that will help you in the long run is patience. At least at the moment, you will see changes on the scales relatively quickly, and that should keep you motivated. Later on, when you get close to your goal, you may find it takes weeks to lose a pound. So, however close to your goal you are, you still need to be patient and keep focused!0 -

This, just replace 400 with 500 and take out the full marathon part. XD I've only done 5K's.0 -
It is a big step to just get started - no matter what the starting number. Congratulations on starting. And it is just a number (that will go down).
I also encourage you to take your measurements - not so much to see where you are now, but to track progress at times when the scale doesn't want to move.0 -
When we get to the point where we no longer get on the scale because we refuse to admit what we have let happen to ourselves is the time you need to strike with change! I was in the same rut, I finally had to get on the scale when I got pregnant, at a shocking 315. I ended up having a failed miscarriage 8 weeks later . I was such a hormonal wreck! The day after the procedure my dad came down and sat me down and had a long conversation with me, which, I will admit, felt more like an assault (very ill timed it least). He asked me what had happened to me and why I let myself go so far! I was so angry with him, because although I weighed so much, I didn't see the weight on myself. I still looked normal to me, my mental game was gone. After that, I was so pissed and determined to prove everyone wrong about me I started my weight loss journey. Five months later I am down 42 pounds! Sometimes, the shock of the realization of just how big you have gotten is the motivation you need to stop. My biggest motivation is that shocking moment on the scale when I was forced to realize what had happened to me!

Turn that depression around to motivation. Make it work for you, not against you. It's a mental thing - every time you find yourself thinking about how bad it is force your thoughts to how awesome it will feel to lose this weight and feel slim and strong. don't let it give you an excuse to eat.0

I never used to tell anyone what I weighed when I was heavier. now I'm happy to tell people where I started vs where I am now -- NOT because I'm proud of starting at 303.4 -- but I'm proud of how far I've come and all the hard work I've done to get to the 187 that I am now! You'll be amazed at what you can accomplish. I ran my first half marathon (I was never a runner - never athletic or anything) on 11/10 and I'm running my next on on 12/9.
and I feel like if I can do it - anyone can!!0 -
I started at 235. I was depressed about that weight, but once I hit 5 pounds lost, I got this feeling of accomplishment and it felt great, it was the motivation to turn that 5 pounds to 46 and going.0

I was 244.5lbs when I started losing weight - that was mid July and I'm now 47lbs lighter.
It's scary yes, but oddly liberating too: making the decision is the first step. Soon you will be bagging up clothes that are too big and digging into the wardrobe for old favourites. Going shopping for new clothes and actually finding some that fit... and more to the point, look nice on. These are things that will come and probably more quickly than you expect.0 -
I totally relate i went on the scale this morning my all time high of 250 depressed ya pissed off ya considering in january i was 185 i quit smoking and ate n ate n ate injured my foot so i couldnt work out it was just one thing after another but i start again hopefully for the last time

I had the same experience, I saw a photo of myself, then got on the scale. Holy cow. I was also 20 lbs more than I thought, my SW was 222 lbs. I had an overwhelming amount of weight to lose. It seemed like too much.
I read through the success stories, looked at photos, and got started. No time like the present, eh? I thought I'd just give it a shot, no pressure. I figured that my body was too far gone, that I would never look like a thin person. But what was the harm in trying? I was a size 18 and my knees ached constantly from the extra weight. I assumed that if I let my weight stay this way, I'd eventually start to have blood sugar issues. Now waitaminnit. WHY am I doing this to by body again?
I filled out the MFP profile and decided that I'd start out as slowly as I could. I set my goal for a 1 lb loss per week and tried that calorie intake on for size-about 1800 per day. It really wasn't bad after all, I figured it was something I could stick with. And I did.
My life is completely different now. It is, without a doubt, the very very best thing I have ever done for myself. For the first time in my adult life, I am not a fat girl. If I can do it, you can, too.0 -
Listen, I say this with the nicest intentions. With that negative attitude, you are setting yourself up for failure. I say that with LOTS of experience. I have "dieted" off and on my whole life and every other time I went into thinking, "OMG HOW DID I GET THIS BIG" and every single time I failed, because I had a negative attitude.
This time however I came in with a positive attitude, and I have lost 41 pounds in the 5 months before my wedding... Instead of focusing on how much I am unhappy with my current weight I focused on positive thing like " I am so proud of myself for eating good today" or " I can't believe how much butt I kicked on my workout".
I literally give myself pep talks.Yesterday I went running and I wanted to stop so I literally kept telling myself, "Come on girl, you got this, look how far you've come I am so proud of you", and I ran longer than I ever have in my life
I am telling you, your nutrition and exercise are only half the battle, the other half is your attitude!!
YOU GOT THIS GIRL! It doesn't matter how far you have to go, focus on how much you accomplish each day, tell yourself you are beautiful and I have NO DOUBT that you will succeed!0 -
And since I was so inspired by the before and after photos, I'll share my own. I am not at my goal yet, and am not in any particular hurry to get there, but I know I WILL get there.

My start weight was 225, I'm now 185 and its taken me 10 1/2 months. I need to get down to 155 to be considered healthy and my goal weight is 140. I didn't take measurement but I wish I had now, I personally have lost more inches than weight, going from a size 20 to a 12. My only exercises consist of walking fast, running up and down steps, and Zumba classes. Yes, you can change your 240 to any number you want. Just keep at it, find what works for you. It won't be easy, trust me! You will have to put up a fight as you go. You can do it girl chin up!0

I started at 245! You've got to stop focusing on what you weigh. Start eating right and exercising. When you start losing, focus on what you've lost and not how far you have to go!! I joined two months ago and have lost about 33 lbs... every pound lost pushes me to work harder Add me if you need some extra support!0

Nothing to be depressed about---starting weight of 245 here.
I still have my very last suit hanging in the closet--size 24. I still have several blazers in a size 16 and 14. These clothes hang in the closet right next to the clothes I wear today--small shirts, size 6 dress pants, blazers and skirts, size 4 jeans.
I'm telling you this because it sounds like you have come to the realization that you don't want to be where you are right now. MFP gives you a place of encouragement, no matter if you are a blogger, a forum poster, or just a logger. The best thing you can do for yourself is start. And you have.
You will look back on that starting number a lot. You will be encouraged by your choices and your path. Most of all, you know you can do this. And let me tell you something else...as good as you think you will feel right now when this part of the journey is complete...multiply that thought by a factor of infinity--and that doesn't even come close!

Don't be depressed - think of that extra 20 as additional bragging rights when you get to goal! :flowerforyou: Instead of saying "I lost 80 pounds" you'll be able to say "I lost 100 pounds!!" (or whatever your goal is, I'm just throwing numbers out there :bigsmile: )
Seriously, DON'T get discouraged. Get started and it will be gone before you know it.0 -
My start weight was 250 lbs and I thought I was 180 lbs. Seriously I never seen myself that big. I knew I was over weight but not morbidly obese, but I did not let that discourage me, now I'm in my average weight at 129 lbs. You can also do it! Don't focus on the scale, focus on what goes in your mouth and work out, focus on the measuring tape as well, the scale is good but the truth is in the measuring tape.0

The great thing is - you will never be this weight again. Keep working hard, eating right, exercising, & you will see results. If you do it right - it'll be slower than you want. But you will get there. You can do this!! :flowerforyou:0

I started at 292 back in May. That was super scary. I'm down to 237.5 now.
I read something on Pinterest once that said, "Don't compare your beginning to someone else's middle." Every journey starts somewhere! Be glad you're aware and have started!
