    Perfectly safe on low.

I wish all those people that lost all their possessions or even life to a fire would have just prayed. I didn't know that, until having just read it, would have prevented the fire.

I have used crock pots for years, the only problem I had once with leaving it on high too long was dried out chicken meat.

    ^^ this

I always use the low setting on the crockpot.

most, if not all, modern crock pots have a heat sensor and/or an electrical overload switch. This is designed to shut the unit off in the case of a malfunction. All electrical appliances have these. Now with that said....nothing is 100% but the odds are in your favor for nothing bad to happen to your house, cat, or your dinner. :) good luck and enjoy!

I put my dinner in the crockpot on high, at noon. I get home from work at 5. It's 2pm and I'm having anxiety that the crockpot is going to malfunction and burn down my house (and kill my beloved dog, none the less). I always leave it going during the day on low (sometimes over night), but NEVER on high. Someone please tell me that the crockpot is not going to burn down the house.

omg.. i totally understand this thought... I feel the EXACT same way... only have never actually been brave enough to actually cook with my crockpot without being home.... SERIOUSLY... i would love too... just never brave enough to actually do it!

I'm sure it will be fine... there are tons of people that do it everday.. and like someone said.... never heard of it in the news as a hazard.

I did have a crockpot that must have gotten hot because it left a slight burn spot on my counter top. I stopped using it and now I always put my new one on a nonflammable surface like some tiles.

Some of these responses are hilarious. I am about to leave work and haul *kitten* home, just to be sure. I'm one of those people that will turn off the iron, close the garage door, get halfway to work and swear up and down that I forgot to do both, drive all the way back home and find out that I did. I'm just a worrier.

Thanks for all the reassurance. It really did help.

I am always paranoid about this too! :) I leave the house when it's on and when returning home, I'm praying I don't see any fire trucks around!! It scares me just the same as leaving the iron or something plugged in.

I do not worry about lights left on starting a fire, I think the risk is about the same.

Pray and ask God to protect your house and dog from any fires breaking out - and trust me he will.

You know God personally? I'm all about praying, but I'd never tell someone that God will answer their prayers.

OP- I'm sure your home will be fine. The worst you may have is overcooked food.

Thank you for pointing it out.......My eye was twitching over here.......

OP, your crockpot is safe. Science for the win!

Personally I don't use crockpots. They freak me out. And I'm away from my house for thirteen hours a day. Leaving a crockpot on that long would leave me on the floor in a full out anxiety attack! haha!

So I feel your pain OP but I'm sure it'll be okay if it's only a few hours?

Wasn't a crockpot responsible for starting the Great Chicago Fire?

Yes, but that's because cows are notoriously bad cooks.

Nothing is guaranteed, yes there are safety devices in appliances - but there can be errors. I never had a crockpot give me danger, other than the one I set on fire myself [see above] and I've been using them on and off for30 years.

But I had a waffle maker - literally catch fire - if I hadn't been a few feet away I would have had bad damage, it was new, no frayed cord, UL and CSA approved with a thermostat, and safety cutouts. However the CSA investigation found a manufacturing defect that bypassed the safety circuits and it had turned on at full power permanently.

OMG!!!! LMAO!! Thank you! I'm sitting herew at work and I SO needed this!!!!
I adore my crock pot, use it and leave it unattended all the time - it probably has separation anxiety and would like therapy but it's not getting it.
    How did everything turn out?

They need to learn to order takeout. Why is no one trying to teach them to use phones so we can avoid these disasters?

Well, I don't know how they would dial. So...... cow gives order to dog. Run, Lassie, Run, to the house and tell the cat. Cat has Panda Palace on speed dial. "Meow, meow, meow, meow, meooooowwwww". "10 meenut, okay"
    Udderly BRILLIANT!

Five hours on high isn't too long. You should be fine. If this is a frequent worry, consider investing in a programmable crockpot. They will automatically switch over to "Warm" at the end of the cooking cycle. This keeps your chicken breasts from drying out AND saves your sanity when it comes to "Ohnoismyhouseburningdownasitypethis" panic.
