Long hair - everyday a wash?

Personally, I think the health of your hair is based ALOT on the shampoo and conditioner you use.
Agreed - you don't have to go all out for salon products, but if you shop around you can get nicer shampoos and conditioners cheap or on sale. I need to switch up the kind I use every few months (or just when there is a sale or coupon lol) or else my hair gets too used to it and isn't as healthy. Maybe that's just me though lol0 -
I wash every other day and condition every day0

I don't wash my hair everyday unless I get especially sweaty from activity or have used an extra amount of hairspray etc. I just rinse my hair under warm water. That usually gets out most of the styling products I use and if needed I use some conditioner.0

I wash mine every day; have since I was 14!
You just have to be careful with which shampoo/conditioner you use. Make sure that whatever you use is designed to be used daily. I do all the naughty things, like colour, blow dry, straighening irons... but my hair is still really healthy. Perhaps I'm just lucky!
If I just rinse, somehow my hair ends up MEGA greasy - worse than if I do nothing. Not sure what that's all about.
lol same!0 -
I have a job that I can wear sweat pants, pajamas or whatever I want. No makeup, etc. So, I usually wash every other day. Even when I was doing Insanity and sweating bullets every day, still just every other day.
The only reason I don't wash every day is pure laziness. My hair is long, fine and is hard to comb out after a shower and I just don't want to mess with it. In extreme cases, I will flip my head over and put some baby powder or cornstarch at my roots, then pull it back up in a messy bun. Works for me. If I have somewhere nice to go, then I'll definitely wash it. Otherwise, I'm a hot mess with dirty hair every other day.0 -
I have long hair and I could not go without a wash after working out. The results would be gross. When I don't workout, I may just shower and give my hair a rest. Works well.0

I have dry hair so I only wash it a couple times a week, and use a dry shampoo in between.0
-
I also find not washing it after sweating to be pretty icky. BUT, sometimes I will wet it and apply conditioner if I had just washed the previous day because I don't think it's really dirty at that point and well the conditioner is gonna help with any smell.
I also found a great product, it's similar to that Wen stuff but much cheaper. It's a cleansing conditioner by Salon Grafix. I don't think I would use this everyday, bc some days I just need a shampoo, but this is a good alternative to using shampoo everyday imho.

I can tuck my hair into my waistband. I wash it every other day. I can't go longer than that and I've never tried dry shampoo. I braid it for workouts and overnight and sometimes all day. As long as you're taking care of it and not abusing it with heat drying and styling you should be fine if you want to wash it every day. I wash it, comb conditioner through and let is sit for a few minutes, rinse, towel dry, comb it out and let it air dry before brushing it. Once or twice a month I'll use hair oil on the ends to help protect it.0

I wash mine every other day. I have a TON of hair. It's almost back down to my butt now and it's very thick. When I wash it everyday it gets really frizzy. I just keep it in a really high ponytail when I work out. And it's worked out that I wash it on run days, because I'm drenched those days.0

I wash it every day with a very mild hypoallergenic shampoo. I have to, otherwise the eczema on my scalp get really bad and that itches like crazy (sebum makes it worse).
My hair is a bit below the shoulders.
I only really wash the hair around my scalp, not so much the rest of my hair. Off course the shampoo will touch it when rinsing it out, but I don't rub it in to those parts.
I also condition only the bottom half of my hair, never around my scalp.
My hair is doing just fine .0 -
I use a mixture of one tablespoon of baking soda to eight ounces of water. This is my shampoo. I wet my hair and then spray the mix on. My hair is really healthy and I blow dry it every day, curl it and use a flat iron. If it starts to get dry, I will spray some apple cider vinegar on it. It works very well. Once hair is dry you don't smell the vinegar.0

I wash 2-3x a week. The rest is a rinse, depends on how I feel. I will use conditioner on some of the rinse days, just depends on how I feel. I'm a little past shoulder length, but it's not thick, very, very fine. I usually pull it back for work, since I'm in healthcare and moving a lot it gets sweaty at work and much, much worse during my workouts.0

I have waist-length hair that I wash every day and it looks like crap. It's frizzy and damaged even though I don't use a blow dryer, curling iron or flat iron ever. But I HATE it when my hair feels dirty. It's oily and when I work out, I often sweat so much, the sweat is dripping off the ends of my hair (even when I braid it). I was told that I should wash it every other day. I tried that for 3 months. It didn't seem to do much of anything for me hair and I hated it so I went back to daily washing.0

My sister and I have really long and thick multiracial hair down to our hips (for traditional purposes - dance). Mine is what I call the crazy straight and curly which gets wavy when it's wet. What we do is - we try to not have the cue too close to the scalp when training, but rather have a plaited high pony tied at the tip or plaited pig tails. Never a tight plait - always slightly loose - for if it were too tight, then that would damage the hair. We wash it after every workout - our preferred shampoo, live-in conditioner - the works. And we work out twice a day - minimum, where we are drenched - as anyone on this journey can attest to.
If your hair is oily - you have to look into getting dry shampoo, as I'd suggested to another poster with the cherry blossom avatar - 2 nights ago I'm thinking. If your hair tangles up - you have to think detangler. And I do agree with a previous poster who'd suggested prenatal vitamins. We take them too and you do see the difference.
We also donate our hair - only we blend ours together twice a year - for they need 4 batches for one child's wig. We make certain ours goes to a coloured child - for our hair type is rare.

My hair is long (mid-back-ish) & curly, & I tend to wash every other day. Dry shampoo makes is look & smell clean if you're sweatyoily.0

I have long hair and wash it every day. If I don't my head starts getting itchy. I shampoo and condition it in the shower then I use a leave in conditioner when styling it, as well as a smoothing serum and a thermal protection. My ends get a little dry and split (always have) but I trim my hair every couple of months (only about an inch off) and it solves that problem!0

I have hair almost down to my butt and I was every other day. If I don't it gets greasy. If I wash every day, it gets more dry.....0

I have waist length hair, and I only wash it about 2-3 times a week. It took a while for my hair to adjust, it was oily for the first week or 2 but now it's great! My hair is thick and wavy, so it would be a frizzy mess if I washed it daily.
I wear it in a high bun + a sweat band for working out and it never gets sweaty. Looks like this:
Here's how my week looks for hair care:
Sun: Wash + keratin treatment on ends + dry and style
Mon: Brush, shine gloss ...that's it (I use bumble and bumble product)
Tues: I'll usually wear it up on the second day after washing + some dry shampoo on the roots
Wed: Wash + air dry with some leave in conditioner
And repeat till Sunday when I have to style it again. Easy peasy.
I wear a cap in the shower to keep my hair dry. If it's been a particularly sweaty day, I wash around my hairline only (leaving the hair in a cap), and towel dry.
PS: you can use baby powder as dry shampoo. Just use it sparingly if you have dark hair.0 -
yep...high buns, cute braids, etc...
i have hair below my breasts and i only wash about twice a week0 -

It's not just you. I am the same way! I thought it was just me, LOL. I buy a different brand every second bottle (ie: Aussie, Aussie then a different brand, repeat..).0 -
I have fine, straight, oily hair and I have to wash it every day, whether or not I work out. Sometimes I even wash it twice a day, for example if I was to spin in the morning it would be wet from sweat so I'd wash it, then if I was to go dance that same afternoon or evening and if I get very sweaty I will wash it again. 44 years of every day washing has not caused any problems with my hair.
My daughter, however, has coarse, curly hair and we can go 4 or 5 days without washing it. Below are pix of my hair and hers.
It is NOT true that everyone can skip days of washing their hair -- I've tried that occasionally over the years, and my hair is disgusting. I do not like dry shampoo either, though I will use it in the morning if I am going to teach some dance lessons early. I personally would not go anywhere except to work out using dry shampoo.

I know exactly what you mean (my stylist suggests washing only ever 3 days or so because mine is long and color treated)! Here's what I do after working out (well and washing my body of course :P):
-Brush my hair out and take a blow dryer to the hair at the scalp for just a minute or so, sometimes using a round brush for volume
-Sprinkle Cake's dry shampoo on the roots that show... usually around my face and above my ears
-Work in the dry shampoo with the same motion as washing your hair
-Style as usual
-Finish up with Chi Farouk Royal Treatment Hairspray (of course you could use a different hairspray, I just use this one because it makes my hair smell soooo good.
People are shocked when I tell them how little I wash my hair0 -

My hair is short and thin but one of my favorite fit tumblr has awesome hair and how she can go without washing it everyday, towards the bottom of the link.0 -
My hair is to my mid-lower back and I have to wash it every day if I don't want the roots to look greasy. I used to put conditioner on all of my hair, but about 4 years ago I started to only condition from just below my crown to the ends because it keeps my hair from getting oily so quickly. I have relatively thinner hair but a lot of it and lots of layers. I have also switched shampoo/conditioners because I found that pantene (what I used to use) made my hair more oily because of the wax that is in it. I now use Tresemme'. I also suggest coconut oil spray for giving hair the shiny and soft feel without weighing it down and making it oily. I suggest you do some trial and error. Wash your hair every day for a week and then wash your hair every other day and see what works better for your hair. You could also try different trial/travel sized shampoos to see what works better for you. Good luck!0

I have long hair and workout every day. And after every workout my head and hair is very wet from sweat. So I "wash" everyday. But I only use shampoo every other day and use conditioner every day. It seems to work for me.0

How do you do that bun??? I have seen a girl at my gym who also does it and it is so awesome! Do you have to have thick hair to complete it?0 -
I wear a wide head band, throw my hair up in a high pony and sweat away! The hair around my skin does get sweaty, I pull the shower cap up a bit just to rinse it. There is NO WAY I could wash my hair everyday! It would look like hell! I also use dry shampoo if its needed but typically just the water rinse works fine.0

My hair is down to my booty and I wash it everyday! If for some reason I get up late or whatever, I will use dry shampoo (suave is my favorite!!) and put my hair up. If I don't wash my hair everyday it gets really, really greasy even without exercise..0
