your take on Ramen Noodles ??

I was just wondering whether you mfp's consider Ramen noodles to be healthy or unhealthy??

    unhealthy i would say (imo)
    if youre talking about the actual ramen noodle brands that come in little packs with the seasoning... first of all the sodium content is ridiculous. no veggies or fruits, 14 grams of fat and high carb

  • Sodium BOMB. Haha they cause bloat bad, plus they are nutritionally void of anything. I LOVE noodles so what I find helpful - if you are craving them, at asian groceries they have super low calorie low sodium healthy noodles that are even better then ramen (and come in instant packets) or I will grate zuchinni (to noodle strips) and boil it like noodles in noodle seasoning packets (you still get the sodium unfortunately but at least its not the sodium and the carbohydrates)

    I don't think I've eaten any Ramen noodles since I was a college student living in a dorm. That was 1976. I think it's good to outgrow teenager food.

    High in sodium and not very nutrient dense. However if you can fit them into your intake and the rest of your food choices are reasonable then you can certainly enjoy some Ramen.

    Not very healthy. I would deem them a rare meal (if I still ate them) because of the sodium alone.

    I'd like to try fresh ramen with fresh broth and all those pretty little veggie flowers sometime, though.

  • Sodium out the wazooo but sometimes if my stomach is upset I'll eat them because they make me feel better. Not health wise, more so because my Grandmother would make them for me.

    Shoot that was considered a food group back in school. LOL I use to take the noodles minus the seasoning and then mix in some veggy beef soup in and that was a gourmet meal, I dont think i would go there now but that was then.

    They used to be a major staple in my household. They were just an easy dish when I couldn't think of anything else to make.
    Once i got on MFP, I realized the sodium content, and now I just don't eat them anymore.

    All food is healthy because it gives your body fuel. just sayin!

    I eat what I want as long as I don't go over my calories or sodium,since they are high in sodium i would just make sure that the rest of my day was low sodium.

  • when I was a kid I use to eat them breakfast lunch and dinner sometimes a snack, but now I don't eat them anymore of the sodium intake

    OK- to me, ramen is fresh noodles in broth with lean protein and barely cooked veg so I call it healthy! The pre packaged crap is terrible and a definate no!

    I LOVE ramen and used to eat a lot of it. I would eat it for breakfast and snacks. It is a calorie budget killer (800 calories for one package) and the sodium is ridiculous. So, I would say in my opinion, unhealthy, although I love them.

    I have replaced my ramen with homemade shirataki noodle soup any enjoy it almost as much. I also plan on trying kelp noodles and see what I think about those. :)

    I don't think there's anything wrong with the noodles themselves, if you have some homemade or quality low sodium broth to use in place of the flavor packs.

    That being said, I love 'em, even with the sodium bomb packs. Everything in moderation. Especially moderation. ;)

    In the early 1980s, I went with a group of friends to Big Bend Ntnl park. After descending the mountain after nearly freezing to death the night before and tracking through a brief snow on the mountain, we stopped at a campsite and opened up a packet of Ramen Noodles. It was probably the best meal I ever ate... For the first time in hours I felt warmth in my body... Healthy or not, it was mighty good on that mountainside. (I have not had any in years but whenever they are mentioned, my mind always goes back to that day in Big Bend)...
  • I've never been a fan, but my adult kids eat them. I remind them of the salt content, so now they make with half the packet of seasoning. My single son makes two packs of noodles with one pack of seasoning. My advice, everything in moderation!

    The noodles alone, I think, could easily count as a bread serving. Use them as a base and mix in veggies and other stuff. Ditch the seasoning packet, because it IS very high on the sodium.

    Personally, I don't consider any individual food item to be inherently healthy or unhealthy. There are no bad foods, only bad diets. Your overall diet is what's important, making sure that your body has the nutrients it needs. Having said that, there are a LOT of foods that I would choose to eat instead for the calories, like a baked potato or mashed potatoes, or cookies, to name just a few. :flowerforyou:
