Anyone take a week off from exercise??

I rest 2 days a week. Every 12-16 weeks I take a rest week with some moderate outdoor walking. I primarily strength train, so the rest week is beneficial. I also listen to my body. Sometimes I need an extra rest day during the week. For example, I just didnt have my usual energy or oomph today.

I pulled a 215 deadlift pretty easily last Monday. I was going to try for 225 today. I couldn't budge 185. I stopped, was just asking for an injury if I proceeded. I finished my workout, but it wasn't 100%. I did a hard workout of Tabatas yesterday. I'm overdue for a rest week. I push hard, but REST is an important piece of the picture.

So, yes REST is beneficial. In more ways than one. Often, MORE is not better. In fact, can be counterproductive.

Go for it. You have my blessing.

Just make sure you hit it hard after the week is up.

Why?

Exercise is good for your overall health. Even if it's not helping your weight loss it's doing wonders for your heart and bones. Don't stop just for the sake of seeing if you'll 'lose more'.

I took a a break last week,a whole 7 days,my body needed it after 6 months of working out.I still ate healthy but indulged every now and then.I did go up 1 lb,in a week thats not to bad..i started working out again today,which felt great! I could tell difference though..If youve been doing it for awhile,then sure take a break,but just know your body does get comfy with just laying around,even if its healthy eating..Our body does need some type of movement.Everyone deserves a break every now and then.Good luck on your journey:)

^^ Yes. It's actually good for your body to get a longer break/rest every now and again, especially if you've been lifting weights or working out really hard. I broke my foot last month and had to take a week off working out. I may not have lost weight that week (I also wasn't making sure I was eating at a deficit -- I took that week OFF!), but I felt really energized and motivated the next. I got right back to a modified form of my workout routine and felt much better. And I'm still losing consistently. If your body needs it, do it.

I've never not exercised since starting MFP and so I want to try one week of just staying within my calories to see how my weight loss progresses. What do you think?

You'll probably spontaneously combust if you do this. I mean... I had a friend of a friend that it happened to. And she died.

Take a week, do what you do. You'll survive.

I"m taking a forced week off since I'm injured. But I would rather not, exercise makes me feel good and I would rather be doing it.

I'm currently sick, and it's affecting my breathing so I will likely not be exercising at all this week It sucks, but sometimes you need to give your body a rest to recover.

If you're taking a week off to experiment, that's fine but I can't see any benefit in losing weight with diet only (excluding extraneous circumstances that are physician monitored, of course).

as long as you are still going to be moving around doing something..go for it. I take days off at a time ( not from moving..just from intentional routines)...I agree with the poster who said it's kind of like a shock treatment to your system. When I would get stuck at a certain weight ..I would tone down the workout a little bit..kick it up with drinking water and then a few days later ..I'd slowly add the exercise routines back..and BAM start losing again.

I am at maintaining now and don't work out as hard every day as I was. I still make sure I'm getting plenty of walking in...and dancing and staying within my maintaining caloric allowance.
