As someone who's been in both a D/s and an emotionally abusive relationship, I can tell one from the other pretty well and this book gives me mad chills of terror. 0/10 would not bang.

Couldn't have said it better myself. While the "adventure" of it might seem fun, the controlling, psychotic, abusive behavior always follows after that sort of draw--that's how emotionally/physically abusive men brain wash women into staying in relationships with them. They make them feel guilty for doing things like skipping a meal or forgetting to call. REALLY?

I stopped after the first book. He reminded me too much of my ex.
    He just cared about her!

    Geez!

Anyone who LETS someone treat them that way needs therapy as badly as he does. Trust me, I've been there. You do not want that. It becomes frightening.

Yeah, he sounded gorgeous and loaded, and it was sweet that he made emotional strides with her, but someone like that never changes their stripes. They are possessive like that forever.
  • And I noticed, that author of this thread is acting like his bodyguard... Defending him like lioness protects its child... Thats geniuine.

Who in their right mind would want a "man" emotionally disturbed, incapable of a real relationship with mommy issues? If Christian Grey is your ideal man, you need therapy.

I have a lot of friends who have read the series and loved it, which I do not understand. I agree with what you wrote here...I personally only read about 5 sentences. Didn't care for the characters and I could not get past the terrible writing...it is a bit like softcore porn Twilight (in my opinion). There is much better erotica out there, if one wants to read that kind of book.

I have, however, seen some funny take-offs on the series, like the Gilbert Godfried clip, the cartoon going around titled "Fifty Shades of Hay" (it involves horses, use your imagination), and an absolutely scathing and hilarious review of the series that I found on goodreads.com (I can't remember the reviewer's name, but I laughed so hard that I cried)

Oh and he's not sad. He's an emotionally abusive stalker control freak who uses his past abuse as an excuse to treat his love interest like *kitten*. And my boyfriend is much better.

You act like you don't want it!

    Fairly convincingly, I might add.

Hahaha. True in a way. But my boyfriend beats me regularly and controls me completely without being emotionally abusive or a stalker. I'd take that any day. Oh and he is an amateur. Spanking is so high school.

Seconded. That book is utter garbage. It misinterprets BDSM relationships and puts them in an abusive context. I haven't read them myself, but I went to a PP training on the books and after reading only a few excerpts I feel like I have a basic understanding of what's in them and how detrimental they are to women and our understanding of healthy relationships.

You wish your boyfriend was deeply emotionally damaged and incapable of having a healthy relationship?

    He was just sad.:frown:

    he only needed love.
And Ana gave it to him.

    *sigh*

    Oh my!

I read them. They were okay. It came to a point where every sex scene seemed the same. I don't normally read romance novels, so that may be part of it. As a side note, I pictured Christian Bale playing Grey.

Orange you gonna tell us more. Maybe that she blue him, right after they met, I mean they had just said yellow.

    LOL.
  • I read them. I finished the first book, and thought, wtf? Then I had to read #2 because of the way #1 ended. By then I figured might as well finish all three, I've already wasted hours of my life. And I hate leaving books unfinished. I wish I could go back in time and talk myself out of it.

^^^This.....I wanted to poke my eye out with a hot needle ... I finally quit book 3. I still don't know how it ends.....and I don't care!

Couldn't get beyond five pages of the horrible writing, or the fact that it's just Twilight all over again.

    Great minds think alike!

This past summer at the pool, it seemed everyone was reading this book. Well being a lady of a certain age, I feared that a show of prurient interest like this might be considered unseemly so I ordered a copy for my Kindle...even more discreet than a brown paper wrapper. I got into the book right away though it wasn't quite what I expected. In my book Grey was a cat. And a mystery was developing nicely. I kept waiting for the S&M and the racy bits but when I got to page 100 without so much as a smack on the butt I began to wonder if I had the right book.

I called my younger sister who is more in the know about things. "Oh," she said, "You're reading Shades of Grey by Dulcie Schwartz." I checked my Kindle...Yup that was what I was reading.
Quite enjoyed it too. It's part of a series. I may order more of them. As for FIFTY Shades of Grey? Well I decided to forego that read. I am more the cat mystery type anyway.

    I read all 3.

Retarded way to end a series but it is what it is.

As far as wanting a Christian Grey of my own, no thanks.

There's a difference between kinky and spanking and biting and all that and pure need to cause someone pain. He was completely damaged, I think i've had more than enough of those already. Save the private jets and money.

I'm a bit of a dork who loves "cat mysteries." Is that a real book? LOL

Exactly how I felt. And then I felt like I wasted valuable moments of my life.

I decided not to read them because I didn't want Christian Grey interrupting my love for Edward Cullen.

If its so bad, why was it such a best seller? I don't get it.

I've thought about reading just for research. But, then I read reviews and I don't want to waste my time. Why do bad reviews and sales not match up?

I would seriously read a funny cat mystery over poorly written repetitive Twilight fan fiction any day.
    Thanks for the recommend!

Because quality and consumption do not go hand in hand. Fast food isn't really "good" so why do we eat it?

Peer pressure, media exposure and decline in quality education. Just look at all the people buying Dr. Oz suggested products. Also, take a look at the grammar and spelling on social media sites like this. The book got media attention, so people wanted to see what it was about. Many of them think it's good because they really don't understand quality literature.
