I am going to a Sushi resturant tonight for a friends birthday. Any healthy suggestions? I know the rolls with cream cheese are out of the question. What does everyone else get?

All you can eat.. minus the soy sauce.

The crunchy rolls and cream cheese rolls are the worst. If you like nageri (I may be spelling that wrong) - fish on top of a rice ball - that's great. Sashimi (fish without the rice) is even better. Kani salad isn't too bad calorie wise and has protein. Now I'm hungry. And a bit jealous :-)

Stay under your calorie limits and enjoy! Nigiri and sashimi are both great and very healthy.
  • Sashimi magoro / sake are my favorites
    Edamame
    Miso soup

I usually get one roll and albacore/salmon. I seem to do fine with that order and don't go over my calories.

    This^^^

I don't really go for rolls myself...gets in the way of all of my Nigiri and sashimi.

Sashimi is a staple for me. It's also the way I judge a Japanese restaurant. High in protein, low in calories.
  • Sashimi would be the best choice because it is only fish. I would try to stick to the low sodium soy sauce if you have to have soy sauce. Nigiri isn't too bad but it does have the rice ball. Try to limit rice. Teka don is good - lot of tuna with some rice. And a nice crab/cucumber salad is always fantastic. I love sushi and now I am craving it!

    Best response ever!!

Personally, I don't eat fish, so I stick with veggie California rolls, yam rolls, and cucumber rolls, and then lots of endamame and seaweed salad :)

Is this really true?! ;) Cuz I can about eat my weight in sushi and it adds up fast!
  • Definitely start with the Miso Soup and then seaweed salad.

I agree with staying away from cream cheese rolls but wouldn't particularly not try ONE just because it has cream cheese in it. Ahi sashimi with cabbage and hot mustard is my fav tho :-)

I just had sushi for lunch today! Here are the healthiest things I had and their cals. Hope this helps give you some ideas! I find that the rice in sushi is enough to fill me up without going overboard with cals- I just try not to eat too much of the bowl of rice that tends to come with it.

Spicy Tuna Roll , 3 pieces 145 cals
Miso Soup with tofu and seaweed, 8 oz 19 cals
    Dynamite Roll , 1 piece 46 cals
Salmon - Sashimi (Corrected), 4 slices 82 cals

If you do go with miso soup, make sure to drink a lot of water because it's soooo salty!

Also, stay away from tempura rolls.

You are correct about the rolls, they are densely packed with calories. Two choices; Sashimi (generally tuna with no rice) or order nigiri pieces meaning slice of fish, wasabi, and sticky rice. Try to consume as little rice as possible. Start with some miso soup and cucumber salad so you don't feel the need to be satiated just by the sushi.

    I usually get:
    Miso Soup (~ 60-80 cal)
Avocado Maki (140 cal for 6 pieces)
Salmon Sashimi (no rice; each piece is ~ 40 cal) topped with pickled ginger (15 cal)

Actually, this was my lunch today :-)
  • And.. if you want rice.. ask for brown rice. It turns into energy and has a lot less calories... enjoy!!

Also avoid the spicy mayo.. Even though it may be mans best creation yet (Yes, even better than flight).
