Thanks for posting. I ate at 1200 calories a day for months and didn't really feel that bad but felt off and didn't loose weight. I upped my calories to 1600 and the weight came right off.
For al the people saying 1200 works for you, it doesn't. Find out the nutrients you are eating, and make sure you are getting enough nutrients in your diet. Chances are, with 1200 calories, you're lacking in areas. And although you may not feel it now, it'll have an effect. It sure did with me, and i finally had to have a doctor tell me to eat more because i was damaging my body. Its not worth it and I love not having to worry about calories excessively.
what makes you think that just because it didn't work for you, that it definitely won't work for anyone else? it has worked fine for me. i only had 25-30 pounds to lose and lost 25 so far on a 1200 calorie diet. i'm going to up my calories soon to maintanance which will be more than 1200. why do you assume i damaged my body?
also, you say that you didn't lose any weight on 1200 calories. i did lose weight and i don't feel off at all.0 -
This was an amazing post (I read and hung on every word)! Thank you I have recently upped my cals from 1200 to about 1500-1700 and have finally started losing again. I love reading this and knowing that I'm doing the right thing, not only to lose weight, but in respect for my body and my health! :flowerforyou:0

Okay so I eat on average 300 to 900 a day and I'm not hungry and I'm not anorexic and I'm losing like a pound a day ....just sayn0

Thanks guys...and I do understand the critical stances out there. Let it be said that if 1200 is working for you, and you've found it to be easy to follow, your results are measurable and sustainable, there's nothing that the original post can do for you. The ideas and experiences in it were indeed meant to empower those of you confused or frustrated in finding other avenues to achieve your weight loss goals.
thanks, well said.0 -
Thank-you. Great post.:flowerforyou:0

This is a lot of information. I weight over 200 pounds. I'm targeting the famous 1200 cal now wondering if I've been wasting my time0

wow thanks!0

This was a great read!
Thanks!0 -
thanks - I do think that if I eat healthy, and exercise - then the calories will take care of themselves. My weight gain is the result of years of poor habits. I would rather focus on healthy eating than a number anyway. But the number approach is measurable, so it's better than nothing!0

Holy cow, you weren't joking. Need to read when I have more time.
^^ yep me too wow0 -
Totally agree but for myself I just don't know where to start Mfp has started me off on 1380 Is this correct for my height (5ft3in) & weight (187lb)0

I am SO glad you posted this. I try to explain this concept to people all the time, but don't have the stats (or a client...I'm not a trainer) to back up my claims. I have, however, had an eating disorder for most of my life, been in counselling with doctors and dieticians, and educated by them on how weight loss actually works. I hope people on here actually read your post in its entirety, because you obviously know your stuff.
Cheers!

Hey guys...to be honest I've been crushed at work, I did manage to get some PM responses out, but sadly I only check this thread 3 or 4 times a day. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and I cannot express how thankful of that I am. There is also no real way I can read every single forum post here, so if you have any thing you need to say to me directly, please PM.
I have vowed to answer all of them!0 -

I am one of you...
...1200 calories a day is a paltry sniff of food. It's a dab of nutrients, and it's almost impossible to follow on a consistent (years) basis....
The number itself mocks you and makes you feel inadequate....You will live on...yes..but in misery.
well the thing is, you're not me.
You look like a rather muscular man, where as I am neither. When you turn into a 45 year old woman, then you'll be one of "me".
1200 calories a day probably is NOT enough for you, but its fine for me. I'm not starving. most days i'm not even hungry.
I woh't have to stay at 1200 calories for years, because I will get to my goal weight and eat more to maintain.
I'm not mocked, and I don't feel inadequate, and i'm not miserable.
perhaps you should change the thread title to end with "for me", since you can't stand there and tell me what's going to work for me.
THIS. I've lost 75 lbs at 1200 calories. EASY (for me) No one way fits all... (FYI, I eat 1200 with, minimum of 20g of fat, 100 g of protein, 35 g of fiber, at least 3-5 veggies and 2 fruits and I let the carbs count themselves) I also watch to make sure I get enough calcium in, in addition to my vitamins.)0 -

As some of you may have seen through my responses, I am most thrilled when someone can lose weight and maintain the loss on 1200 a day. That is a testament to your ability to stay focused, and be unhindered in your task, and it's great. But the majority of people (myself included) cannot do this. We either were not built to be that diligent, or our bodies fought us every step of the way. In either case..75 pounds is no laughing matter...and I say, congrats!0 -
great post!
I can't seem to hit 1200 calories but I do try! I make a Nutri-blast every day, I drink it in the morning, afternoon and late afternoon (I make enough for 3 cups) and feel I am getting plenty of fruits, veggies and protein. I am not starving and the weight is coming off! I have a salad at lunch and eat protein and vegetables for dinner. I have always been a very simple eater!0 -

Is it okay for some who weights 250ish to do the 1200 diet with no excercise? I eat a lot of vegetables and make sure I get my nutrition. I feel great!0
-
Awesome info! Thanks for taking the time to post it. My goal is set at 1200 but I use my exercise to buy more food cause I'm hungry at only 1200. I've only been here for 2 1/2 weeks so I still have lots to figure out, one step at a time.0

I see these types of responses alot. the reason we get to 200 or 250 in weight is originally more because we don't exercise, not always because we don't eat right. If you were to look at my diary..i'm sure you would not say that i "eat right". but..i do exercise. alot. a whole lot.
So in the grand scheme of things, and to answer your question, yes you'd lose weight. assuming the worst, and you are 50% bodyfat, that means 125 pounds of you is fat, and 125 is lean. that puts your BMR at approximately 1250. All you have to do is get up and walk around and by all logic, you'd lose weight!0 -
Amazing post. Very liberating!0
-
You're amazing. Maybe I can pay you so we can talk on the phone to learn more? One more thing. If I start walking should I stay at 1250 or so I eat my calories that I worked for?0
