Nervous giggle. You probably make him nervous.
He's sensitive about his manhood.
Maybe.
He might just be a d!ck.0 -
What is squatting and leg pressing?0

straw man is made of straw
Pretty much this.
I don't think I've ever laughed at a person in the gym - although these two young guys last week made me think about something Rippetoe wrote:
Men try to lift too much weight.
These two young men were trying to do squats in a Jones/Smith machine and had way too much on the bar. They just bounced up and down doing a straight back, one eighth movement. I was going to help them out except they did one set of 3 and moved off to do more jerking about on a leg press. The gym owner finally stepped in and helped.
Funny? Not really.0 -
It's hot to see a girl lifting heavy doing barbell or plate-loaded squats, period. But I ,do agree that [in some gyms] it is rare to see women engaging in such exercises mainly due to misconceptions or intimidation factor.0
-
I don't think it's funny I just think it's rare to see a girl squat w/weight and proper form.
I just think it's just as rare to see a man squat with weight and proper form.
I am purely speaking from my... what word did he use? Locality?0 -
Everyone gets it wrong, until they get it right
noones first few squats were perfect
i've never had problems with men laughing at girls/women on squats or leg press, I've had quite a few offer me their weights
I see a whole bunch of men getting it wrong also. Heck, half of my reps are no good. I am glad they are only laughing behind my back, since I'm not a girl.0 -

Nice!
You should switch your grip so that your thumb is behind the bar, in line with the rest of your fingers, it will take a lot of pressure off your wrists. Probably overstepping by commenting that, but, eh. Hope that helps!0 -

That seems kind of unsafe... Wouldn't she have a better chance of losing her grip then?0 -
In general, men tend to pile a ton of weight on and go 1/4 of the way down.
So true. Besides myself, I've only ever seen one guy at the gym hit parallel. While there are some programs that call for doing 1/4 squats (NROL, men's edition, for instance) - they typically have those in between sets of "real" squats.
As far as OP goes - women that squat are hot - not funny. That being said, I did giggle to myself one time when a girl was doing squats. Not that it was "funny" - but more of a, "wow - cool. You go, girl."0 -

No, not really. The bar will be trapped between your hand and traps/shoulders. And it will help keep the weight straight in line with your forearm, as opposed to possibly wrenching your wrist backward. Doing bench presses with that? Yes - dangerous. Squats? No.0 -
Why do some men think its funny to see a girl squat and leg press?
I don't pay attention to others in the gym unless needed.0 -

If a man is laughing at women at the gym (what he is really doing is giggling like a pubescent in sex ed), then he is just a poopie-head.0

Not at all! I appreciate the tip. I have been feeling some pressure in my wrists since I switched out of the smith machine. The trainer said my form was great, but never said anything about my grip.0 -
I'm a little self-conscious at the gym, but learning to ignore what most people might or might think about me, my technique, whether I'm using a machine or free weights, my age, my shape...whatever. Form is crucial, and I observe a lot of people doing things I wouldn't consider effective, but maybe their goals are different than mine. As long as they're not doing anything super dangerous I'm not there to judge.
My trainer's observation is that people who have a strong background in ballet, yoga or swimming tend to pay more attention to form and to need less correction. I find that interesting.0 -

hmm - I try not to go down too far, am not up to using much weight yet (50KGs), but I heard that dropping right down is more likely to knacker your knees, so I try not to go any further than parallel, which often has me stopping just short of it. D'you think I should drop further?
What I dont want is to have difficulty walking the next day - I have a manual job.
Oh, and I use one of those smith whatsit machines cos my gym doesn't have a free barbell, which is annoying cos I cant do deadlifts, but I can shove a bench under it to do presses.0 -
I haven't experienced anybody laughing...
but the second time I used the squat rack, I asked one of the personal trainers for help and tips on my form because I wasn't sure I did it right the first time. I said, "Hey, can you help me with the squat rack?" He replied, "... The squat rack? For squats?" and I said, "Yes." He said, " .... Why squats?" and I said, ".... Because it's part of the program I'm doing..." and he just looked at me, and then started walking over there with me. About halfway there he stopped and asked, "Wait, the rack? That one over there?" I said yes, and he said, "Okay, the free one? Not the Smith machine?" I said yes....
So anyway, he finally got over it and gave me some really good tips, but I wasn't sure why it was so hard or what the problem was. I will admit, though, that the PTs at my gym can be a little frustrating, no matter what they're doing or helping you with.0 -

Hey, thanks Bean! This is why I like you.
Anyway, sorry for butting in there!0 -
Most women I see lifting weights are sticklers for proper form, much more so than men. I see far more men slinging weights around who clearly have never bothered to learn how to do it properly than I do women.
And my locality is greater Boston.0 -
I have seen maybe 3 people in my gym do proper parallel squats, and there's a mirror in front of the rack, so that makes me one of those 3. Sadly, I see too many guys using the squat rack for curls ;_;0

If you were doing squats with free weights, I could advise you a little better. Going "*kitten*-to-grass" shouldn't screw up your knees with free weights, provided you do them correctly. It's more likely your knees will get screwed up from not going to parallel. But, since I've never used the Smith - it doesn't allow for a fully natural movement - I don't know really know if going further is good, bad or indifferent. Sorry.
Personally, I just go to parallel with my working sets. Sometimes in my warmups I'll go A2G, but not always, and only with light weight. Parallel is what many/most of the guys that write the big programs (such as Mark Rippetoe and Jim Wendler) recommend.
eta: In short, keep doing what you're doing - just try to hit parallel. Try to find a place with a squat and/or power rack, though. And if you do, realize you'll have to drop your working weight down a bit, as working with free weights is more difficult than with a Smith.0 -

I haven't had anyone laugh, or even be that incredulous. The trainer who works when I go in is a really nice 20-something guy. He started me in the smith machine, but when I told him I wanted to go to the power rack, he didn't even blink. About once every 3-4 weeks I have him or the fitness monitor walk by and check my form to make sure it is OK. They have always said it is great.
Maybe the more these male PTs see us ladies ASK to do free weights, and show that we CAN do it, they won't be as shocked.0 -

That's awesome!!
My adopted grandmother started going to the gym and getting a PT a few years ago when she was losing weight on WW, and that guy, also 20-something, started her doing free weights right away, even though she was in her late 60s. She's kept the weight off, and improved her bone-density since then—and I just think WAY TO GO!! to that trainer. He is the bomb!! Wish there were more out there like him.
I think the PTs at my gym have issues, though....... the first time I met with one for a PT session (there is supposed to be a 1 session per month included in my membership) he spent the whole time trying to sell me on buying more PT sessions. It was a total waste of time so I gave up on that.
Also, the only thing I ever see them do with women is stuff like swinging a dumbell (like, literally swinging it... bad for joints!!!) or doing that thing where you pass the stability ball overhead between your feet and hands while lying down, and I'm like, no no no no no. Never see them doing any actually lifting exercises with them.0 -

I have a little gym crush on the trainer, even though I am married and practically old enough to be his mother...
...what really makes me happy is that he has done so much to help me even though I have NEVER hired him (I hope to this year). Part of his job description is to help members when he doesn't have a PT session. I have seen him with different PT clients, and he tries to push them in the direction of the free weights. He will kick you in the butt, but I have never heard him raise his voice or be mean.0 -

he's cute!! About 23-25yo...6 feet tall...shoulder length wavy brown hair....not super muscled, but has muscle. Smart too...some how we end up in these conversations that have very little to do with fitness--the other day it was allergies and mental illness ( do wild animals have mental illness? Are allergies inherited or developed?)
Hubby doesn't know it yet...but I am going to take money out of the taxes to hire the PT for at least a few sessions0 -
