Are we really going down the political road on this? If so, I'm out.

We live in a F*cken nanny state with an overbearing govt that wants to controll everything....only going to get worse until people start standing up and saying NO

This. Nobody ever thinks anything will happen until it happens. They won't institute an outright ban on football anymore than they'd wake up tomorrow and say guns are illegal. Nobody would go for that. What they'll do is gradually implement policies that make it pointless to own a football team (or a gun, as the case may be) or to try to make a career out of playing football, etc., until fewer and fewer people find it feasible to participate. And one day we'll wake up in a country where professional football no longer exists and go "Wow, how did this happen?" That's how governement mercenaries are able to work their voodoo. People are stupid.

I knew this scaremongering was coming as soon as the Pres said if he had a son he wouldn't want him to play football. The media is some funny **** these days and you all get dragged right in. I'm right there with the poster who said that their equipment needs to be better.

I gotta stir the pot too. As long as players wear helmets, you are not going to be able to police the way they tackle and make hits. My sons play rugby. In rugby, you tackle differently. Do people bonk their heads? Yes. But not very often.
You can say that the people who play the game are grown men. But they started as kids. If nothing is changed, in the near future, parents are going to start saying "No. My boy is not playing football. I don't want him losing brain cells."
So, don't bury your head in the sand. Something is going to change, and you cannot make helmets better and you cannot stop guys from tackling head first if they are wearing a helmet.

Holy hell. This thread went south fast. Football will not be fixed from just changing the professional level. The culture needs to be changed from the beginning so people are allowed to be injured and get fixed up rather than it being badge of honor to limp out there pumped up with painkillers.

Also, I think Jimmy and the Rugby players have a point about pads and helmets.

Rugby is soooo much more fun to play.

But still, they couldn't outlaw football down here, that would violate our Freedom of Religion.

I think playing and watching football has made you paranoid.

I saw nothing in that article that suggested making football illegal. the author was questioning whether football is as dangerous as media reports have been making it seem. his opinion is that football is as safe as any other sport, which I agree with.

as a Rugby League player who had a go at American Football, I can honestly say I think all the equipment in AF makes the game more injury prone, just my opinion of course.

    Rugby is a badassed sport.

It is :) makes us fellas who play it all the more prettier lol

    Pretty?

You must play in the backs then.

I agree. I've played both sports and without the pads you have to use proper technique.

If they tried to outlaw football, Texas would secede from the Union.
  • People LOVE to see others being mauled, bruised, beaten on and competed with...whether it's in a Roman Coliseum or a football stadium. I highly doubt that such a sport would be cancelled forever. People thrive on that heat too much, and where there is a market, there will be a supply at a price...whether that price be overpriced tickets to a football game, over priced gear, or bonuses like extra sales on chips, salsa and soda during football season...the demand won't go down. It's too beneficial. Sorry if that didn't make sense. I'm hungry and need to eat. Brain is failing. Time to go eat.

I love me some football but yeah, the NFL official head talks about safety and the players/coaches still receive/give bonuses for injuring each other. The players know this *kitten* goes down and still play. The league slaps a fine and lets these people keep their jobs. So I'm not so opposed to the government stepping in and taking legal action against illegal behavior in sports (targeting, bounties, throwing punches). If it is assault on the street it is assault during a game.

Last year a MSU player actually grabbed the facemask of the U of M quarterback and twisted the guys head while sitting on him, immobilizing his body. I fully believe that man should be thrown in jail for attempted murder. Instead, he's going to be drafted quite high this year.

It's not a political thread. The article doesn't mention a politician thinking about outlawing football at all. It says in the first paragraph that the president commented on the safety of the sport, and then goes into ways tools the game safer. The title of the thread, has little to nothing to do with the content of the article. It would be like me linking to an article on healthy eating and titling a thread "Outlawing Chocolate?!?! REALLY??!??!!!??!?11eleventy"

Now there may be politicians out there who do want to get rid of the game, I don't know. What I do know from reading the article, is that no politician was quoted as saying so.
