Gym Etiquette - what bugs you?

hardly anyone wipes their equipment down. doesnt really bother me unless its wet.
Iam always on my phone(texting, logging workouts, playing bike race, changing the song)
what bugs me
people that are extremely close to me for no reason
People that use excessive amounts of space/or take up walkways for no apparent reason
people that use the only rack in the gym for body weight exercises?
Guys that wear excessively gay clothes
When people have horrible form and i happen to be watching0 -
I do not see what the big deal with texting is. If I am walking on the treadmill and texting I am not bothering you at all. Also, I keep seeing that it is bothersome to many if people use their cell phone at all...well I use my cell phone for my music. If it has nothing to do with you I do not see why it should bother you at all...just a little rant.
Things that bother me...
people not wiping down the machines after using them, i do not care if there is no sign of sweat...we all know that germs and other bacteria are now on the machine...WIPE IT OFF
people that carry on loud conversations (i need some FOCUS)0 -
4. Your not a dog, don't reward yourself with food.
Hahaha0 -
When I'm on a machine or using the free weights, and someone walks within my range of motion/in front of me. My mind can't help but refocus onto whomever is moving around me, and chances are I'm at a weight that's difficult without focusing. It's one thing to walk around me, another complete to walk *directly* in front of me and interfere with my set...
Girls who refuse to sweat at the gym! I was there the other day, and between songs I heard a pair of girls go "eww she's so nasty, look at the fat pig sweat!" Meanwhile, they looked fresh from a salon, perfect make up, small waists and everything. Sigh. I work hard to keep sweating...0 -
When people don't wipe down the machines. I don't want to sit on their *kitten* sweat!0
-
I hate it when women wear really strong perfume.
I don't mind it when people smell like clean laundry or deodorant, or even a light body spray.
But when I'm choking on your stank cloud of Dior Addict ... I hate you.0 -
People talking on the phone on cardio equipment and not silencing their phone at the gym. I don't need to hear alerts every time someone gets a message. And during group classes chatting. I think it's disrespectful to the instructor and everyone else in the room. I've also noticed people will leave their tissue behind on cardio equipment and that bugs me.0
-
People not wiping down the equipment because they were only on it for a few minutes. I don't want your germs, wipe it down!
As for the phones, I use my phone to keep track of my workout (MFP, FB check-in). I also am a habitual multitasker who has to be doing severla things at once. Texting, checking out the internet, all helps keep my mind off of what I'm doing. Even though I've been doing this for 5 months, I still don't like it, but I find ways to keep my mind occupied.0 -
people who hog the mirrors and machines. i could careless how you smell, and i really don't care if you talk on the phone (free entertainment, anyone?) as long as you stay outta my way and let me work it!0
-
i noticed a few people on here who were disgusted that other gym patrons weren't working as hard as they thought said gym patron should be.
They must be awfully focused on thier own workout if they even notice this.
That being said, it definelty pisses me off when some guy comes in and builds a fort around himself out of half the dumbells in the gym, sits there talking and refuses to give up two of them for ten seconds so i can do my set and be done.0 -
1. People who don't wipe down machines. Ew!
2. People who act creepy. Please don't stare at me while I'm working out it creeps me out and makes me not want to go to the gym.
3. People (usually adolescent girls) who sit on some piece of equipment and text for 10 minutes without ever doing a single rep. Come on! If you can text while working out efficiently or briefly between sets, I don't care. But why do I have to wait forever to use some piece of equipment so that you can plant your *kitten*... Grrr...
4. People who try to come up and talk to me while I'm working out. I have my ear buds in for a reason!
5. People who spit on the floor. Just gross.0 -
oh, and i hate it when women don't return my creepy, staring eye contact! lol0
-
i hate the GYM, PERIOD!, will not go!0
-
Oh.... Couple others.
Loud talkers on the cardio equipment. There are two to three people there every morning who basically yell at each other over the noise of the treadmills. I can't drown it out with my headphones.
People "running" on the treadmill that jump on the sides every two minutes to get a drink of water, adjust something for a minute, and talk about how they run so much, but just aren't seeing any results.0 -
People that use the Planet Fitness circuit training area for anything but circuit training. It should only bother me when it interfers with my workout, since my workouts have been impacted so much by this, I am annoyed everytime I see it.0
-
Coughing with your mouth open on the tread mills. One time this guy next to me was just hacking away and I nicely asked him to please cover his mouth. He actually yells at me, "I HAVE ASTHMA!!!" So I calmly said, "My mistaked. By all means, please use that as an excuse for your bad manners."
He moved to a different tread mill. YUCK!0 -
Tips for gym newbies:
1) Remember why you're there - to workout. Keep your mind focused on that and less on texting your friend, checking in on Facebook, holding a conversation, or flirting with Joe Steroids over there.
2) Remember that other people are there to workout, too. Instead of occupying the only ab machine in the gym for all 120 sets of 12 reps you plan on doing, how about limiting your use to 3 sets per occupation and let someone else get their sets in between yours?
3) If you, ma'am, think I might be creeping you, I probably am. I need motivation just like everyone else.
4) Before you judge me for my potbelly and graying goatee, remember that even Joe Steroids over there was a spaghetti-armed shrimp at one point. It didn't take me a week to get this fat...it'll take me longer than that to get back to being buff.
5) Wipe down the machines when you are done. Use a paper towel, alcohol wipe, or your own towel - I don't care what you use - just do it.
6) If you bring your kids to the gym (my gym is at the Y), please don't let them occupy machines that other people need to use just because you want to keep them busy. If they are legitimately using them, that's another story.
7) If you see me doing weird stretches in the corner before I workout, it's because I am allergic to bodily injury. I stretch to warm up and prevent injury. I still do PT stretches that I did in the Army. It served me well for my 9-year Army career and I walked away with zero damage from PT. Not everyone does things the way you do them and that's okay.
8) If you need to fill up your 6 gallon water bottle, please go to an empty workout room or seldom-used bubbler to do it. Your bottle you just filled sapped all the cold water out of the bubbler reservoir and I am now drinking what has the same temp as fresh pee.
9) If the people obviously half-assing their workouts bug you, don't fret - they'll be gone by the end of next month.
10) I feel it bears repeating that you don't have to follow people as they walk to their cars so you can park as close to the front door as possible. You are there for fitness. Walking from the far edge of the parking lot counts.0 -

They're probably not staring. When people get in "the zone" it can come off as staring. I catch myself doing it once in a while.0 -
ok, i guess i'm venting.
Plyometrics are a great workout... and i wouldn't fault you one bit for doing them at the gym, on the nice upholstered benches. Except i go to planet fitness. And it just pisses me off that they have no problem with the random people who come in and do one day of plyo (only never to be seen again), while i am not aloud to do a dead lift (or blah, blah, blah).
Mean while 3 benches sit there with no upholstery at all0 -
I think one of my biggest pet peeves about the gym is working really hard at changing my lifestyle and then you have a woman who is wearing 10 lbs of make up, with her hair all nicely done, and wearing skimpy outfits with a obvious push up bra, sitting on her cell phone and barely even doing anything for herself, other than check out other ppl... sorry, I dont't want to sound judgemental but it drives me crazy!!! It's a place to work out not to pick up ppl!!!0

I only have two things that really bug me.
1. When people don't wipe down machines. Especially in the winter with th Flu going around. When I'm sick I skip the gym and workout at home so everyone else doesn't get sick. Some people don't care.
2. Boys that are like 10-12 years old running around the gym using all the equipment. Maybe it's just me but why would a young kid with tons of energy need to go to a gym to workout? You're with all your friends, go run around outside and play a game. My nephew is 11 and he doesn't go to a gym to work out. It really bothers me when I'm on a roll and I'm ready to move from a machine to something else and I can't get on a specific machine because a 10 year old thinks he needs to work out on an elliptical.
Our YMCA doesn't allow anyone under 16 in the fitness room. There is an allowance for 14-15 year olds but they have to attend a glass and pass a test first. Kids under 16 actually have their own circuit training room downstairs.
I have my cell phone with me because I have 4 kids (1 special needs) and I keep track of how many reps/weight/sets so I can record on MFP later also a lot of people use them for music.
Pet Peeves:
1. Guys who come in to use the cardio machines looking like the unibomber the whole time with their hoodies up.
2. People who use the weight machines as stools while they wait for the next machine to open up.
Our Y also does not allow the use of cell phones in the fitness areas or locker rooms ( for privacy issues because of camera function).
It's not so much a peeve as much as "things that make you go hmmm...":
People who are several moves/beats behind in BodyStep.
It's like "can you not see the pattern, repetition of moves and that you're doing something TOTALLY different than everyone else?"

People on here telling me I need to go to a gym to maintain muscle mass and reduce body fat.0

i've seen one person use the circuit trainning area for what it was intended, one time, the entire 7 years i've been there.0 -
not re-racking weights. there were at one point signs in our weight room that said that those who failed to re-rack would have their membership revoked. it's seriously like another workout for me just to re-rack the huge weights that some of these guys just leave on the bars when they're done. not all of us can squat 315.
This. Irks me to no end. The weight room that's in the gym at my apartment is small, and so it can get crowded at certain times of the day. Mix that with people not putting dumb bells back, and it's a mess. Sorry, but I can't deadlift 35 lbs off the floor because I need a spot to stand and you're too lazy to put it back where you got it.0 -
People that come on the internet and whine about other people at the gym.
This.
Especially women that complain about other women wearing make up at the gym.
How does the fact that another girl wears make up effect your workout?0 -

Try not to be too bothered by the younger generation in there as long as they are using the equipment correctly. Its not always about needing to workout, but creating healthy habbits. My son is 6 and I let him workout with me, but I also supervise and show him proper technique. Kids watch their parents workout and they want to copy its good for them to start young even if they "dont need it"0 -
a lot of people may be using thier phones to log wieght/reps and or follow a particular program btw... which you may or may not be mistaking for texting.0
-
When there are a ton of treadmills available and someone has to take the one right next to me. Drives me crazy.0

Man, there's a pretty big list, but I'll limit myself.
1. Due to several bulging discs in my back, I'm somewhat restricted to what cardio I can do for extensive times, and the recumbent bike is where I burn the majority of calories after strength training. So... the straps on the pedals are not supposed to fit like d!ck skin. There is no reason that day after day I go to a bike, sit down, and try to fit my feet into what is obviously the "condom" setting on the straps. It's not that serious, people.
2. The old men in the gym. This is not to say ALL old men- I'm referring to the specific subset of old men that smell like peanut butter and balls. Get your creepy pedophile *kitten* the eff back.
3. As I have aged, I have become more and more of a germaphobe. Now at 33, I go to the gym in sweatpants/track pants and a hooded sweatshirt, nightly. One reason is to sweat- that's the whole point of working out, and in Florida, I can just walk outside to do that. The other reason is so no part of my body touches the equipment. I spray down the equipment before AND after I use it, because I know some dirty *kitten* have funkdafied it without wiping it down.
Again, there are more, but these are the ones that aggravate the most.0 -
My most recent annoyances:
1) Women (men don't do this at my gym) who socialize while on a piece of equipment. (i.e. on an ab crunch machine sitting on it, doing 1 crunch a minute while gossiping with the girl who's on the leg flex machine next to her, and sitting there for 15+ minutes.)
2) Women (never men, ever) who are overweight and on a treadmill going 1 MPH while chatting on their cell phone, and doing this for 30+ minutes. Why even be on the treadmill if you're going to take 30 steps per minute? I'm all in favor of overweight folks (myself included) getting fit but 1 MPH isn't gonna' do anything. If you can hold a conversation on your cell phone while exercising you aren't putting much effort in.0
