What food's calories have you been shocked by?

Raisins! 78 calories for 50 raisins...really? I could easily eat about 200 raisins :noway:0
-
Hooters Hot Wings: 866 calories for a serving of 5, but they are "O-So-Good"!!0
-
peanut butter when i realized how small a tablespoon is!0

CINNABON ! 1 of those has like ~ 900 calories. I would've guessed 500. I mean I know they were high cal but damn, 1 cinnabon = 3.5 donuts wtf!
OMG I know! Cinnabon!! I love cinnabons above all other baked goods and I knew they aren't good, but I never would have expected that they'd be as many calories as a good meal! It makes me sad but honestly I'll still have them occasionally. Nothing will turn me away from the cinnabon.0 -
The stuff from fast food restaurants. I don't eat Whoppers at BK or those burgers topped with eggs at Red Robin, but no wonder we have an obesity epidemic!
Totally agree... always shocked at how little calories are in McDonalds burgers - until I get them and see the tiny wrapper, anyway!
Usually go for just the burger, when of course the calories really start to pile on when you have a large fries and large full-fat drink.
Cinnabon:
We don't get that brand in the UK, though do have similar.
Anyway, I thought; nah, they must have mis-read and it was actually kj or something*, but no, their own website says calories.
Could easily get through a four pack of that sort of thing in one sitting if a bit hungry.
Next time someone asks how to put weight on, I shall point them that way!
* A friend insists one portion of his 'bulking' protein powder has 2500 calories and he was having three a day and still skinny... I'm 100% sure it was KJ.0 -
I've stood in Tesco during lunch comparing calories in their sandwiches and they're ridiculous. The Pret sandwiches and salads are also really high in calories for some reason? The best bet is to make your own sandwich, or get one of the more tasteless Tesco Healthy Living sandwiches, like tuna and cucumber. Not sure how many people in the UK are, but I walked into a Tesco and bought a chicken salad sandwich on brown bread. However, the calories stated 495. Odd, I thought. Considerably high for a chicken salad sandwich. I tried to find the right nutrition value on MFP but could only find one with 350 calories. WHY have they added 50% more calories?!0

Wouldn't be surprised if those extra calories came from mayo - 620 calories per 100ml comes out worse than chocolate for the normal stuff.0

Homemade chili. I made homemade...measured...used 97% lean turkey...1/2c. kidney beans Calories alot higher than I would have thought.1

Really? I always find chili to be really reasonable.0 -
Peanut butter and regular butter. Never paid attention to those 2 before!!0
-
Starbucks pumpkin bread. 390 calories per slice. That's a freaking meal in one little piece of bread.0
-
Also pasta. Seems fine until you realize how many servings you actually eat0
-
Bacon. I thought it had more calories. Glad that i can still sneak it in to the meal plan periodically!1

Pasta, man I used to eat my chili on top of my pasta, make all kinds of pasta with like 5 cheese in them, I look at it now and the amount of it I get to actually eat to fit into my calorie schedule is kinda alarming cuz I love the stuff.0
-
Spices 5 or 6 calories per teaspoon. I love cooking with spices as opposed to salt.0

I find potatoes to be a lot higher than I expected and I mean a naked potato. A small potato is like 150 calories and that is before you add anything to it.
Go to a restaurant and get a big loaded potato and you are probably looking at 750+ calories for the potato. Same for potato skins....your appetizer.
Even worse - Jason's Deli Plain Jane Potato (Natural buttery blend, cheddar, sour cream, bacon, green onions.) has 2320 calories. the lighter version has 1130 calories!!!!1 -
Straight up Tanqueray martini. I thought the clear alcohols were much lower in calories!0
-
I have a ratio one: "lean" brisket has more fat than protein?!?!?!0

Red's Gluten Free Hot Cereal0

Costco poutine. Hubby and I used to split a hotdog and poutine for dinner fairly often, as it was so cheap. But that thing (nevermind the loaded hotdog) is over 1200 calories!
I never expected french fries smothered in cheese and gravy to be healthy, but wow. No wonder I felt like such a slug afterwards.0 -
White Castle's chicken rings and fries (together about 1,130 cal). I don't go there much, but I went and was surprised by how much calories it is for that meal compared to a Culver's kids meal, chicken strips and fries (together about 495 cal). I definitely know which place to eat at instead if there is a next time.0

Nutella.... And I would eat it by the spoonfull0
-
Granola. High in calories AND sugar0
-
Banana bread!0

Some fruit has shocked me! I tried weight watchers unsuccessfully and they are 0 points there.
This is exactly why I didn't join WW and came here instead! Thank the Lord haha0 -

Poutine is something I have to talk myself out of eating quite a bit. It's terribly tragic haha... especially if I go to Quebec! It must be a crime not to eat poutine there. Oh well! Costco was an eye-opener for me too! One of those hotdogs (not toppings) is 550 calories!!! The only part of Costco I used to look forward to was when we'd get lunch... Now I hate EVERY minute of the trip haha0 -
Everything at Chili's. I used to eat there ALL THE TIME. Nothing good, seriously.0
-
A lot of things. Yesterday, I was shocked that by the time I logged everything in that I used to make a sandwich came up so high! I would have been better off eating pizza. Bread, sandwich meat, and cheese are very bad ideas. Got to get back on this ball!0

All grain alcohols - bourbon, vodka, gin, tequila - that aren't flavored are about 70 cals per ounce. A pour in a bar is about 1.5 to 2 ounces depending on the place and whether the bartender likes you.
Liquers are off course more caloric, as are pretty colored drinks with more caloric things added to them, like juice or mixers.0 -
Not calories but the trace amounts of trans fat that cheese contains.
Also when you heat oil - any oil - it creates trans fats.0
