Neighbor smoking pot. What would you do?

My wife runs a home based day care and, a large part of this day care is outside time in our back yard.
The problem is that the teenager next door and his buddy enjoy smoking pot outside. The smell is strong enough to come into the back yard.
It is also strong enough to where I can smell it as soon as I get out of my car (approx 50 yards away).
My wife has talked to the kids (well, 18 years old) and explained that the state could potentially shut her down because of the unsafe environment.
One parent who smelled the weed has threatened to pull her kid out already.

It happened again today and my wife went over there to explain it one more time but this time, she said that she was going to talk to the boys Mother.
The reply was "go ahead and tell her. I don't care".

So, should I
1: Talk to the Mom?
2: Just have my wife call the cops the next time?

The problem with calling the police is that if word gets around that dope was found in the house, the mother could lose her job as a school teacher and that would suck.

Suggestions?

I'd talk to the mom and explain that the pot smoking could cause your wife to lose her business.

I would call the police now, explain the situation, and get the name of a detective to come talk to them.

Well, technically, the pot smoke IS crossing into my back yard.
This is where a legal business is run and is subject to spot inspections by both the state (infrequently) and the health department (sometime three times a month)
I mean, if they were shooting up heroin, I could care less because it does not cross onto my property but the smoke does and, as a result, my wife could get her business shut down.

Are you suggesting that having litle kids breathing in pot smoke is somehow safe?
  • I'd talk to the mom first, then if nothing came of it, call the cops. What a crap situation for you and your wife.

Well, that might be true (actually, it isn't true. I am smart enough to stay away from that crap), but, the state frowns upon that kind of stuff.

I would talk to the mom first then call the cops if nothing changes. Like either your wife will lose her job or the other lady will. Its her kids she should be able to control her child if hes living and smoking under her roof

Smelling pot from a neighboring house is in no way unsafe. If they were dealing pot, that's a different story.

Your wife can't be held responsible for this, she's not causing the smell!

    This.

If the kids don't care, too bad. I don't smoke and I couldn't care less in most situations but in this case they are messing with your livelihood, end of story.

...additionally, I would document all conversations surrounding the isseue because I would guess that should someone call the authorities on your wife, if there is documentation showing your efforts to change the situation your wife will have at least some sort of a leg to stand on to fight it.

I'd call the cops. Not only is it illegal, but I'm allergic to hemp. Logically, I don't want to inhale that stuff second hand either! Mom probably knows about it if the smell is that strong. So I'd skip #1 and go straight to #2.

Personally, I'd talk to the mom first and then call the cops if nothing happens. You can't be worried about causing someone to maybe lose their job if they obviously don't care about your wife losing her business, either.
  • Tell them to smoke further away from the fence or inside, if they don't listen just call the cops.

Do you really think their mother has the authority to make them stop? They're obviously going to keep doing it.

Talk to the mom, then call the cops. I live in Colorado, so things are a little different 'round these parts... but the mother should be given a chance to rectify the situation before involving the police, IMO.
  • Talk face to face like a man, and let them know whats gonna happrn.

Talk to the mom IMMEDIATELY but only once explain and if it happens again call the cops while they are still smoking.
    DOCUMENT EVERYTHING.

For F@#KS sake call the cops...EVERY...SINGLE...TIME! Take it from someone who grew up with druggie/alcoholic parents; its better to end this now and with finality.

Edited because I really can spell.
