    This thread is incorrectly titled. It should be "Why you shouldn't wear second hand clothes". Thrift stores have more than just clothes. They have books (great way to get cheap reads), and alot of other items that can still be used. Clothes can be washed and sanitized. Most people donating clothes donate good stuff and the thrift stores don't sell worn out items (for the most part)

    I disagree with the OP on the clothes issue, though I think the intent was humor. Vintage Clothing places sell second hand goods and no one balks. Also, if I was destitute, I wouldn't think twice about wearing second hand clothes. It's also economical and environmental to re-use items. The reasons against second hand use are pretentious at best.

    I suggest a more positive outlook in these regards. Thrift stores provide a great service to those in need. I certainly don't look my nose down at these stores or the people who use them. I shop them all the time and find fantastic stuff for almost nothing. Clothes don't make the person. The person makes the clothes!

    RIGHT! I love shopping at plato's closet. Abacrombie, Hollister all those name brands for under $10 each! I got this super awesome NIKE sweater brand new with the tags on it for $14, Originally $65. SCORE!

    I'd go to thrift stores more often if i had any closeby. But I tend to stick to Target, Kohls, Levis, etc... Especially Kohls

    Although I used to work at Value Village and some of the clothes that came in were very cute. A lot of weird stuff came in too - porn mags, sex toys, bongs, cocaine, a loaded hand gun, a huge bag of hash once. Good times.

    Soooooo. What did they do with said items? Ahem.

    The sex toys/porn mags were always thrown out. Bongs too, except when an older, clueless employee would put them out on the floor as a vase, haha. The gun and cocaine we handed over to the police. The hash...I don't really remember what happened with that...*walks away whistling*

    I shop at 2nd Swing Sports....becaue my 4 year old doesn't need $500 worth of new hockey equipment every year until Bantams.

    Lets see do I shop at thrift stores yes, sometimes. For name brand cloths that are cute but too expensive otherwise unless i get them on sale. I've actually found new cloths with tags at TS, but that is another story...Do i buy lucky brand at the outletmall, or Ross sure..but i've never spent 100+ on jeans and do not plan too...raised poor..now i just have to much common sense ( btw i make about 75,000)

    you may not donate your name brand clothes but A LOT of people do!!

    I found a designer coat at Goodwill that was originally $250 and I bought it for $3! I live close to a wealthier part of town, so all the rich people donate their clothes, and I get them for under $10. Love it.

    I don't shop at thrifty stores because I have a fear that someone had died in the clothes.

    This is also my fear....seriously, it is.

    I don't go throwing around money at expensive clothes though...a good sale at Macy's for my work stuff...I get shorts, t-shirts and the like from Costco often. I get my Lucky jeans at Costco whenever they have them...otherwise I do Levis when they have a sale at Macy's or something. All in all, I'm not a big shopper though...wife pretty much has to take me out or I'll just wear my rags until they are very literally, rags.

    No time to dig through the racks. I have 3 kids, 2 of whom are impossible to shop with (they run off), so I would rather go to a store I am familiar with and can reach right for something off the rack and not have to go down a whole line of red shirts, weeding out the good and bad (for example). It's not worth the time!

    More to prove a point, than to brag, I bring in a little over 100k a year, I'm not saying I buy all the granny panties at the Thrift stores, but if I see something I like, I'll buy it; why not!? I'll buy designer items IF they are truly "you get what you pay for" worthy, but I'm not going to sit here and DRESS like I am made of money....most of the time, those people are broke as a joke living with their mommas.

    Agreed! I have no problem paying a bit more for something that is going to last, hold up in the wash/after several wears. I also have no problem buying really cheap stuff if it is cute and looks good. Forever 21 is one of my favorites for cheap clothes that are unique/trendy.

    Really, it's all about appearance to me, not cost. And I am really good at finding deals on things that look fab.

    I shop in thrift stores all the time. I've lost two pants sizes in the past few months and don't want to pay full price for "temporary" clothes. I LOVE finding a pair of jeans for $1.99! I do feel good wearing them. I always feel good saving money and still getting something "new" (new to me)!

    You never know, the people running the laundromat who stole all of my Tommy Hilfiger clothes a few years ago might have donated them. :tongue:

    No way am I going to dish out $100 for a pair of jeans, only to have my daughter puke on them. I'll stick with Gordmans and Kohl's. Or brand name consignment shops. I'm not against thrift shops like Goodwill, but around here, the jeans they sell look like they'd be in fashion about 20 years ago.
