I just recently purchased organic coconut oil as I was told to take at least a tablespoon a day to start. I have NOT used oil of any sorts for years and when I tried to taste it a smidge it was gross. and it looks like crisco. :noway: Wondered if there is anyone out there that uses it and if you could tell me the benefits you have seen from it's use and also, another way to use it so I can take it w/out gagging. haha Thanks in advance for the help

I have used coconut oil to lose weight before. I used to take it as a supplement of sorts right out of the jar, but now I just use it in cooking. At first, the taste and smell of the virgin coconut oil was FAR too strong for me so I used the expeller-pressed coconut oil at first. I couldn't take it straight, it made me gag. Just incorporate the oil with cooking.0

Refined coconut oil for cooking. (higher smoke point)
Unrefined coconut oil in coffee or moisturizer for dry skin.
My coconut oil experiment includes one participant so the benefits are sketchy at best. So far it hasn't killed me or turned me into Superman.0 -
I use coconut oil for cooking and as a skin lotion. Can't say it has any magic weight loss powers, I just like it and so does my cat. Seems to work for hairballs if you have that issue.0

Why are you "taking" coconut oil?0 -
Aside from liking the taste, my favorite thing about coconut oil is that when I cook with it, nothing burns. I also use it to season my cast iron pan.0

Why are you "taking" coconut oil?
I started training and was told 1/2 tbsp is good in my protein shake...I tried to eat it plain and YUCK! And I NEVER cook with oil, I fry nothing everything is baked So I never use oil...just wondering what the perks were with taking it as a "supplement" type with lifting and wondered if anyone put it in their shakes or food?0 -

It's a good way to get some more fat into your protein shakes, which can make them more filling. There's really no reason to "supplement" with it. It's just saturated fat. It's pretty good to cook with and it's healthy and whatnot, but there's no reason to be eating spoonfuls of it.0 -

Many vitamins are fat-soluble, so cooking with oil is actually a good thing, especially with vegetables. Melt your coconut oil and drizzle it on your broccoli or something. It's also really good on popcorn (I have a coconut oil spray, which makes it super easy).
I'm not into all they hype; I just like it.0 -
I use it to make air popped kernels.0

My wife has a terrible time eating before noon, so I got her drinking bullet-proof coffee + protein powder. Recipe is simple -
One cup hot coffee
One tablespoon coconut oil
One tablespoon butter, from grass-fed cows for better fats (supposedly)
One scoop vanilla protein powder
Whizz it all up in a magic bullet and she has a 350 calorie cup of coffee that keeps her full and energized until lunch time.0 -
You can throw a tablespoon on top of your left overs too-
I pre-portion everything and throw some on top before I even close the lid up- keeps the chicken nice and soft when you re-heat it (esp if you microwave!)0 -
I use the coconut oil spray instead of olive oil. The only thing I don't like about it is you can taste coconut in everything you cook, and I'm not a coconut fan. However, it helps with the thyroid, so it boosts metabolism and it helps control blood sugars by improving insulin use in the body.0

You're right that many vitamins are fat-soluble.
You're right that cooking with healthy fats is a good thing.
You're not right that these too facts have anything to do with one another.0 -

Eating fats will help absorb fat-soluble vitamins?0 -
i use it in my porridge yummy0
-
i like to smear that all over my body.0

put it in a smoothie or protein shake. can't taste it at all.... use it for cooking. easy peasy.0

I can't see your diary, so I'm just guessing based on a few things you said, but it sounds like you're avoiding fat which is why you need a coconut oil "supplement" to feel full. Some fats are good for you and you should be cooking with them! I'm not saying you need to deep fry everything, but why not saute things in a bit of olive oil? Or use nut butters or avocado in your shakes? Not to mention you're going to get bored with food if all you ever do is bake things.0
-
try puting it in stuff or on stuff. Plain would be gross!
I use it a lot.
Try sauteeing veggies in it. It's got kind of a sweet flavor.
Or spreading some on some whole grain toast. or putting it in a smoothie :)0 -

me too. xD0 -

Eating fats will help absorb fat-soluble vitamins?
I'll happily stand corrected. I was not of the impression that dietary fat aided in the uptake of fat soluble vitamins.0 -
Yep, it goes anywhere you'd put oil. But... I started eating it straight because I needed some quick energy in the morning. And it was really gross, until it wasn't. Now it's kind of like starting the day with a piece of chocolate. (I know! It's still gross! And yet strangely compelling...)0

i dont know much about it, but i made my own carob chips, super easy and taste too only 50 calories0

Who told you take it ?0 -
I normally use it in my breakfast protein smoothies -- makes them go a little further and adds a richer flavor. I also use it for cooking, moisturizing, and shaving.0

Coconut oil does have a lot of health benefits, but eating that much of it is hard. Just try using it in cooking instead of butter, or I like to put it on bread... especially something like cinnamon raisin. So good!0

No offense - but that sounds like the worst thing ever:sick:0 -
