I think in that instance, tone is what really matters most.

    This.

That being said, I get siht all the time for saying "guys". It's a bad habit. When you have 90% of your staff being female, and you start by saying, "I need you guys to... " I tend to get jumped on a lot for that.

Nope, ladies is good. Ma'am totally fine also. I'm in law enforcement...and I get called sir all the time because that's what comes to mind for people when they see an officer. It's a gut reaction for people (annoying in itself) and corrected quickly, but irritating.

So yeah, ladies is just fine.

You realize I'm going to call you sir from now on, right?

Odus YOU can call me sir...

    I generally like "Dames".

Or "Wimmins". But not if you are speaking because people might think you are saying "Womens" which is offensive or "Women" which is insulting.

In a business setting, I'd prefer to be referred to as "Femonitron" or the plural "Femonitronia" because it conveys a certain professionalism.

You forgot "broad", and "skirt." I had a bad habit of interrupting people who would say "broadly" in arguments, and would sya to them, "That offends me. Could you say in a female manner?"

    I've never minded ma'am.

I get annoyed when someone refers to us as "girls" however.

YOu look way too young to be called ma'am. :)

Well then its a good thing that many men use it as a form of respect for women rather than saying it about their age eh?

    Lets make a list.

    We cannot call you

    -Ma'am
    - Ladies
    - girl
    - woman

Would you just like me to draw a pink taco and point it towards you everytime I include you in the conversation?

    No balls.

    Hi Taunto!

I'd prefer to hear "ladies" which is formal and proper as opposed to "you guys" which, to me, is tacky.

    I am not a guy.
I did not sprout a weenie.

Not even when the moon is full?

I cannot figure out why anyone would find it offensive, although some do. Apparently there is a growing number of women who prefer NOT to referred to in anyway that would insinuate that they are female. Which is confusing to me. If they were referred to as gentlemen would they care?

IMO there are two appropriate times to say 'ladies'
1.If you work at a retail store, and a group of women walks in.
Example: "Hi, ladies! Welcome to chainsaw land, let me know if I can help you trim your bushes"

    2. If you're creepy.
Example: "I am a creature that lurks the depths of the internet, come at me ladies ;D"

Ok. Hypothetical situation here. You are in a public forum.... say a grocery store. You walk away after paying, and you drop a $20 bill on the floor. You are already moving on in your head, and someone else notices and grabs the bill and need to get your attention to inform you that you dropped your money. What should he call you to get your attention?

I personally would either say miss, or maam depending on whether they were older than me or not. I have heard people say "Hey lady." before. Would that offend?

Ladies doesn't bother me. However, ma'am does. It just makes me feel old. Especially if it's some 20 year old calling me that. But then I have to think that is is a sign of being polite and I get over it.

"Ladies" does not offend me. For reasons I'm not quite able to articulate, "Females" does. We're not merely the female of the species; we're WOMEN, dammit! We're so much more than the physical body parts that make us female. We're fully evolved WOMEN. We're a freakin' FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH, SON!

Whoa... sorry... dunno what just happened there. :blushing:

It's generational. I'm always going to call women, Ladies or Ma'am. Even the b*tches.

Hey Ladies. Complaining about petty sh!it like this has the opposite effect. You don't seem commanding of respect, but rather like you have time to whine about things that no man ever would.

If you're from the south, ma'am and sir are just a way of life. IMO.
