The OP watched a documentary that she found interesting and decided to share it. She likely didn't post a link to the documentary because she wasn't aware that one was available.
For those of you who might be interested in watching the documentary, I did find the following link to view it:
http://www.documentarytube.com/10-things-you-need-to-know-about-losing-weight
I watched it and found it to be actually quite interesting and it might contain some information that some of you may find useful.
To the OP, thank you for sharing.0 -
All of these are false, but I had a huge LOL @ 7.
Listen up, lactose intolerant people (80% of the world's population), there is no hope for you. You HAVE to eat LOW FAT DAIRY to loose weight.
Sorry, it's a scientifically proven fact. Don't even try loosing weight without it.
Look at all those overweight vegans! Look at all those fat paleo/primal lifestyle peeps! They are all so unhealthy, look at them, they need dairy... the poor things.
Anyway *ahem*
1. Meal placement does not affect weight loss. Eating a calorie deficit does. Spacing your meals evenly can help some people cope with a calorie deficit and curb hunger. There are, however, people who find that intermittent fasting works very well for them.
2. Your brain estimates hunger and fullness by volume, and you will have a perception of being fuller if you eat the same amount of food on a plate with no extra space. This is just a trick to help you eat a calorie deficit. There are a lot of people, myself included, who have lost weight without purchasing new dinner plates, though. It's hardly necessary, especially if you count your calories.
3. This is another helpful aid for eating a calorie deficit, and probably the most useful because it is exact. I would also include keeping a food journal.
4. Hormonal factors for metabolism can be extreme in some people, like people who have long histories of disordered eating or those with hypothyroidism. It can be very difficult for people in these circumstances to get enough macros/micros on a diet that would put them in a calorie deficit because their BMR's are so low. For most people, it's not an issue, but if you have trouble loosing weight it is important to see a doctor. Also, hormonal responses to stress and also to calorie restriction can lower your metabolism and make weight loss more difficult and lead to plateaus and stalls. Why discount these things out of hand?
5 & 6. Tricks to deal with a calorie deficit and curb hunger. I'd also add raw and steamed vegetables.
7. AHHAHAHHAHAHA What was this sponsored by the dairy industry? Seriously, were there lots of Got Milk? commercials?
8, 9 & 10. Exercise ("afterburn" effect included) and activity are not necessary for weight loss, eating a calorie deficit is. Exercise can help you create a calorie deficit but it is not necessary.
Here, I'll translate:
1. Eat a calorie deficit.
2. Eat a calorie deficit.
3. Eat a calorie deficit.
4. Ignore people with metabolic issues, pretend plateaus and stalls never happen.
5. Eat a calorie deficit.
6. Eat a calorie deficit.
7. Support corporate sponsors.
8. Create a calorie deficit.
9. Create a calorie deficit.
10. Create a calorie deficit.
I'll admit it doesn't make for great TV, though.
When you conduct your research on weight loss, you should probably pay attention to research other than what you want to hear. Also, try to keep in mind that these are generalities aimed at the average person. The average person does not have a GI tract disorder of hormonal imbalance. Go rain on someone else parade.0 -

Well I am glad you told me what video what not to watch if that is what OP was basing the information off of0 -
First off I am not "playing the age card", and I'm not saying it is not possible to lose weight, of course it is possible at any age. All I was saying it is harder to lose it the older you get . Wow, you people are unbelievable you don't give anybody a break if somebody doesn't agree with you.
I admit defeat... you can be judgemental, mean people who have all of the answers and have nothing nice to say.
I will keep up conversations with those who are on my friend list, at least they are supportive. And I will continue to live my life being respectful of people and their opinions....
Good luck to all...0 -

Yes, you did.Wow, you people are unbelievable you don't give anybody a break if somebody doesn't agree with you.
Irony because you're at this point freaking out because we're not agreeing with youI admit defeat... you can be judgemental, mean people who have all of the answers and have nothing nice to say.I will keep up conversations with those who are on my friend list, at least they are supportive. You're welcome to do that too. I personally keep an open mind and try to learn from others. I don't play the "Oh I'm old so I'm an exception" or "You guys are being mean and judgemental card" when I'm wrong. I simply say "oh nice, learned something new!" or better yet... don't say anything at all!Good luck to all...
Good luck to you as well0 -
mmmmh so now " Im lost0

all I can say is just do whats right for you. I do organic fat free milk just cuz I only use in my protein shakes so who cares what it is that's in it. I am now following In Place Of A Road Map, <-- Amazing look it up on MFP. I also lift weights and just pretty much move as much as I can. I can say the plate one is a good one, I did cut mine down to a lunch size 10" and measure everything and it makes it look like a HUGE portion so my mind thinks, " OH BOY!! FOOD GALORE!!!" ....so meh

Soup ... really? IMO, Soup runs right through you and is usually loaded with sodium ... pretty worthless, no matter what the commercials tell us.
If you actually make the soup, it can be pretty low in sodium.
I watched the programme too. In this test, they took 2 groups of army personnel - one group ate a 'normal' meal of chicken & veg with a glass of water at the side; the other group ate the same BUT their food was liquidised together with said glass of water. The 'experts' then measured how long the food stayed in the stomach for. They ascertained that becaused the 'soup' is thicker it took longer to empty from the stomach, thus resulting in feeling fuller for longer.0 -
Totally Agree with you, it's all about Calorie deficit..0

I saw the Horizon programme and thought it was pretty good.
The points made in the list are being taken as generalisms though, and really there is no one size fits all solution to weight loss. Also they are phrased without explanation, so you can't tell whether it would apply to you or not.
The plate size thing is psychological. We have started buying bigger dinner plates and have a tendency to help ourselves to larger portions if our serving spoons or plates are bigger, or if we see more food in front of us. This theory was also featured on a programme called Secret Eaters last week.
And the skipping meals thing... I've read studies on the Weight Watchers site that show if you continue to watch what you eat and there is no difference in your calorific intake, skipping meals is not a problem. However, I know I can't do that as I get ratty. The Horizon programme and a similar programme earlier this year with Dr Alice Roberts looked at this theory and she was asked to not eat for 24 hours after breakfast, at which she was given a free choice from a range of different breakfast items. At breakfast the next day, she was given free choice from a range of different breakfast items, and this demonstrated that after starving herself, she went for bigger portions of the same and fattier, more sugary foods as well on top. This was apparently typical of the study results they were looking at, that show we have a tendency to overcompensate if we think we have missed out, and programmes like Supersize vs Superskinny frequently show people skipping their breakfast 'meal' and overcompensating with sugary or fatty mid-morning 'snacks', which they psychologically aren't counting.
And so, I have scientifically proven, that I watch way too much TV. And yet, I still am bigger than I ought to be, wonder why??? (Don't worry, working on it!)0 -
This thread has so much e-peen stroking.0

Because you don't agree doesn't mean it is wrong, if it worked for the person that is posting the information it isn't wrong... what works for one person doesn't work for others but it doesn't mean they are wrong.. we are all looking for what works for us and personally I appreciate any information that others have to give... doesn't mean I agree with everything posted but I don't feel the need to criticize....

To all you so called "experts" ... if losing weight is such a "science" then why is losing weight so hard for so many people...how many different conflicting information has there been through the years.... you have your opinion and that is fine, I respect that, but you are not necessarily "right"... next year there will be new theories and new facts and new opinions... the bottom line we all have the right to believe what we want and post what we want.... I've read the word "stupid" too many times to respect you "experts".... here's a saying for you to follow, "if you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all" and that is "correct" advice

Really?
1. Doesn't make a difference. I don't eat breakfast. I hate eating in the morning and it DOESN'T keep me full like people say, it makes me hungrier throughout the day. I've been losing weight just fine.
2. I can pile up a 10" plate or have a 12" plate with a reasonable amount of food on it. If I'm measuring and counting, it's the same amount and I don't need the whole psychological "I'm eating a full plate" thing.
3. Obviously.
4. Wait, what? My metabolism was in the gutter while recovering. Some people have thyroid problems (like my mother who eats a very reasonable amount of food for her height and weight and still can't lose because she has an underactive thyroid and can't get the medication.) It plays a huge role in weight loss.
5. Eating protein is good for you. This is pretty much a no-brainer.
6. Soup tends to be full of sodium and really isn't that filling. *shrug*
7. Fat doesn't make you fat. You need fat for healthy brain function. Low fat is a gimmick from a couple decades ago. And some people are lactose intolerant. The dairy I consume amounts to about one 4oz package of greek yogurt a month or so (I'm not lactose intolerant, I just don't like dairy.) I'm not going to eat something I don't like. Besides, I get more calcium from my soy or almond milk, which is really the only reason I would ever feel the need to consume dairy. Yeah, and have been losing weight just fine.
8. You don't need to exercise to lose weight. You need to eat less than you burn. Exercise is essential for overall health, but not weight loss.
9.
10. Okay, I just can't anymore. Just. Can't. With. This.
Well, I needed to know all of that to lose weight... Actually, all I needed to know was:
1. Eat at a deficit.0 -
