How often do you weigh? Daily but I record the weight once a week.

How do you keep yourself from getting discouraged if the scale hasn't changed? I don't expect it to change often but I like seeing a number. I take it with a grain of salt though. It's just good for my mental game to see a number and know if I'm on the right track or need to curb the sodium/calories for the next few days. That's just how I work. A lot of people get discouraged from the number, I get motivated.

How long would it take to see if a diet is working? 3 days? A week? 6 weeks
  • every morning because i am ocd.
  • every morning when I wake up, before I get ready for work. Lately my weight has stabilized for the last couple weeks so I have taking measurements instead.

I weigh everyday, I find that stepping on the scale every morning helps focus me for the day ahead. That being said it is not for the faint of heart, especially when that number stays in the same place for a number of weeks. (imagine looking at the same number 21 times instead of 3). But, this has helped me and reminds me to keep working each day.

This is exactly what I do. For the same reasons. I figure, didn't put it all on overnight, it wasn't going to come all off overnight.

    Works for me.

    4. That I give myself a 3lb "variance", meaning, I can fluctuate up to 3lbs from my low weight, before I'm in full-blast-mode again...because of that, I don't freak-out if I gain a half pound or two pounds. Not to say I don't get extra careful, but, it's a LOT easier to take care of a two-pound increase than a seven-pound increase. A LOT.

THIS ^^ I don't want to be blindsighted by only weighing in once a week / once a month. If I see myself start gaining slowly I can quickly stop it instead of being shocked by a huge gain at a weekly weigh in.

I weigh every day and average it on Mondays and even post it on my profile. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/southcarolinaguy

That doesn't mean I think everyone should do it. I realize that it is hard on some people.

My reasoning is that since weight varies so much, by taking a weekly average, I can smooth out the ups and downs. If I only weighed myself once a week, I might think I'd lost or gained weight when maybe I really had not.

My scale is a stubborn butt though so I'm relying on measurements and body fat %

I weigh every day. I know the scale goes up and down, but I'd hate to miss a day of seeing the scale go down:) Besides,, I've lost 16 pounds and my clothes still feel the same, so I'd get really discouraged if I waited for that to change.

I weigh myself daily (which is how often it seems this subject comes up on MFP. )

    1. It really helps to learn just how volatile scale weight can be. I'm a "normal" weight guy, and yet my weight fluctuates as many as SIX pounds in a day, and is almost always a pound or two different. Weighing weekly does *NOT* make this volatility disappear. It's still in the numbers. The sooner you realize and accept that this happens, the sooner you can stop fretting over (or rejoicing over) every single pound. Establish a solid plan, execute the plan, and don't get hung up on whatever the scale tells you on any given day.

    2. I'm a nerd and I like the data.

I Weigh every day, but log weekly, and take measurements monthly, it's going okay with that at the moment. When I was weighing weekly only it was harder for me to keep track and like a previous poster the weight could creep up for the week, now every day I keep an eye and that has helped me keep down each week

Every time I pass the scale, even if I just weighed in an hour before, I know its the wrong answer, but its true. It's not as bad as it sounds because I don't have a working scale at home.

On MFP, I always record my first weigh in of the day.

Every morning so I can track whether or not I lost or gained and then change what I did the previous day if needed. Ive lost 60 lbs doing it so its not an issue for me.

I officially weigh in every Thursday, but I will weight myself to see if I am losing or if I am gaining.

Every day since I'm a obsessive compulsive about having feedback and data to work with. If I don't know what's going on until the "official weigh in day" once a week and I've gained a pound or not lost any then I've lost a week of potential results. I understand that if you're not in any particular rush to be on any schedule then this may seem a bit obsessive.

Daily, but I only log it if I have lost weight. If I see myself go up too many day in a row I know there is something wrong.

Every morning. Of course I also worry every morning when I have not lost any weight. I am on maintenance and so not need to lose more, but of course I still am hoping....

I'm obsessed with my scale. I weigh in everyday sometimes twice. I record any loss and then that's the weight I try to beat. Gains I don't worry about unless they stay for more then two days. Trying to always beat my lowest recorded number keeps me motivated. I do measurements usually once a week!

I weigh about weekly. It used to be on Wednesdays, but now it's either on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Whenever I remember, really.

When I first started to try and lose weight, I would weigh myself every day. Since I didn't know about normal fluctuations during the day it was highly discouraging. I didn't understand it at all and it made me give up. I felt like I was punishing myself for no reason, and I never got results.

Weekly works much better for me. Even if all I see is a point or two drop, it's awesome. If I weigh myself and find that I weigh more than I weighed the previous week, I just wait and weigh myself later in the day, or the next day. Usually I end up weighing less that way. Am I fooling myself by doing that? Yes. Am I still looking smaller and having issues keeping my pants up and having people notice that I've lost weight? Absofreakinglutely. So I know that what I'm doing is working.

Once a week, usually Wednesdays. I'm not trying to lose weight, just want to keep it in check.

I weigh myself daily but have one "official" weekly weigh in day. The daily weigh ins give me encouragement when I'm doing well and a warning when I'm not so on track. They also allow me to see the temporary effects of TOM or one day of eating the wrong things. I can learn to roll with it and know the temporary weight will drop off in "x" days.

The official weekly weigh in gives me a goal to work toward each week. I chose Tuesday to help keep me in control on the weekends, yet have one day to recover!

I have my recorded weigh in on Tuesday mornings right after getting up, but will usually hop on the scale again one more time later in the week just to see how things are going.

I weigh in twice a week, Mondays and Fridays, but record my weight on Fridays. This way I can have a small splurge over the weekend but check myself afterwards.

Once a week unless the number seems out of whack. For instance last week I went to the gym 4 times and although I had a large Easter dinner that should have been burned off by the following weekend. When I got on the scale it said I gained 1/2 a pound. Now I did have 2.5 slices of pizza for dinner the night before but I was annoyed and said something must be wrong. I waited 3 days and weighed myself again and I was down almost 3lbs. But in general I weigh myself Saturday mornings since weekends are usually when I go out to dinner or have some drinks.
