I've lost 100lbs in the past 12 months. Until I started Couch to 5k, I was never losing inches off of my stomach. Crunches, planks, weights, biking like a fiend. Running is great exercise. Get good shoes. Get good advice. Run a little, then run a lot. It is sooooo worth it. If it's above 34 degrees run outside. If it's under 34 degrees run outside in cold gear.
Run,, run away. When you get tired. Go home.
Also, lift heavy weights. Big muscles eat fat. Good luck!!
Well said0 -
I've started training for a half marathon. I've lost over a stone with a better diet and running. I will post before and after shots when i reach race day. :happy:0

see you at the finish line...............0 -
Been running since beginning of Feb and I'm addicted haha! I see it as a virtuous circle - running helps you lose weight, but then you want to run better, so it motivates you to eat better and lose weight, then you can run more easily/further so you get better at running and therefore lose weight... and so on and so forth!
edit: I'm certainly no angel in the eating department, but I'm confident than running is helping the process!0 -
I'm also interested in seeing some success stories when it comes to running as I am going to start running from now on as I am aware of how good it is for your fitness levels and health. Looking to lose a noticeable amount of weight in 2 months. I'm currently 142lb and hoping to lose some weight, preferably measurements!!0

I lost 10lbs in two weeks once i joined mfp...my running helped... no crazy diets just stayed within my calorie limit...good luck to you...happy running0 -
Nope running gives you no results at all... I mean running for 10km a day turned me fat. I didn't lose a single kg at all and am as unfit as they day I started.
Ok.... so that was sarcasm.
Running will give EVERYONE a result. If it was not for me running since August last year I'd still be struggling. Running is the easiest way to lose fat & to gain some sweet fitness. I've had people running gyms who comments on my fitness & THEY are inspired by me. Feb 2012 I was the laziest person I knew..... now I run 10km a day & enjoy every moment of it...and I do NOT even get out of breath anymore. I've lost all my weight that needed to be lost..... I lost that in 7 months. It's the best stress relief, best form of cardio & the added bonus of being outdoors getting a tan and being able to just think about nothing at all.
You don't need pictures to prove that. But I went & lost 79lbs in 7 months.... what does that tell you. Size 22 down to a 10.0 -

Apologies for the massive pics lol!0

Apologies for the massive pics lol!
You look like such a bada$$!! Nice work lady!0 -
Is that... ridiculously photogenic guy behind you?
But really - you look amazing! Everyone on this thread does. I'm just waiting maybe a week to get back to my C25K program because I seem to have pulled my calf muscle or something there.. but will try to resume my attempt to become a runner next week0 -
I started running to lose the baby weight. I ran only for a minute at a time and wanted to die. Over the course of a few months I built up to 5K then I basically became addicted and ran many races from 3Ks to half marathons and the Chicago marathon. I was running a lot for a period of time and managed over 1000 miles in 2011. But, I don't run all that much anymore... a good week is about 7 or 10 miles... as I am busy practicing and teaching yoga.
Before pic - One or two days before I had my second baby.
After pic - about 100 pounds lighter and before a 10K race (in which I PRd).

My profile pic says it all :-)0

Just ran a 200 mile relay race with 9 other runners. Never thought I'd be able to run a mile...
Did Elliptical for the first 40 pounds, then started Couch to 5K. Just 6 weeks ago I added weight training to the routine and now I do weights 3 times a week and cardio 2-3 times a week.

My advice: get on your feet, and start running. No one will have same results. Your motivation should be from within, not other people...0

First time ever posting... hopefully this works... I started running with the C25K app and trained for a half marathon. Running is the only exercise i do right now... Could definitely benefit from some lifting and toning. It has made me feel much better about myself Good luck n great race pics everyone
should fix it0 -
Well my main pic is one of me running. I've also got a comparison from me at 195 back in Jan 2012, and then in the fall. I do a lot of running, have worked up to 40-50+ miles per week, training for my first 26.2 in Oct 2013, so I can vouch for running as a good way to lose weight

I don't have any good pics, but I LOVE running! I really got into this whole weight loss thing by signing up for a half marathon. I trained over 10 weeks and went from 2.5miles being a STRUGGLE to running all 13.1 in a really great time for me (2:18.) I wanted to lose a total of about 30 lbs so I kept a modest deficit, but the calories burned from running are what allow me to pig out on pizza with my boyfriend once a week and go out to bars with friends and still keep up with losing weight. Since that time I'm down about 12lbs and it is noticeable. All my tight jeans fit great again, but thighs, butt, and stomach have seriously leaned out, and my butt cellulite has really decreased! The love handles have shrank a bunch as well.
Weight lifting is a wonderful thing that you should totally do, but running is FANTASTIC and a great way to get in shape and it will definitely help you manage calories and look great! Plus it is very rewarding to overcome a running goal
Just a tip- you will retain water after longer runs, or even from short runs at the beginning. Don't panic and weigh yourself constantly or you'll go crazy!0 -
Running is a great sport. There are tons of 5ks all the way up to full marathons throughtout the year. I use running for motivation. I have a half marathon coming up next month and a full in October. I also just got my friends into running also. They said they wouldnt be able to run and I told them to just trust me and Id help train them. They are up to half marathons. I started a long time ago by training for the Crim with a group of people using Jeff Galloways interval running theory. Its something anyone can do.0

I don't have any pics right now because I lost my camera (booooo!), but I love running, and if you want to run, just get up and do it! It is strangely addictive. Plus the endorphins from the "runner's high" is awesome. It has helped me manage my depression better than any pill I ever took, and even if I'm just plodding along, slowly, I feel powerful and like a total rock star when I run, and I become less fixated on how my body LOOKS, and more on what my body DOES.
I recommend also doing heavy weight lifting though, if you want to have that "toned" look. I love running, but I never really got rid of my cellulite or gained muscle definition in my abs or anywhere until I started lifting heavy weights (bought a weight bench, bars, and lots of weights for $30 off Craigslist, watched some tutorials to learn good form etc). My body is pear-shaped, so I store all my fat in my hips and thighs, so this may be why even though I ran a lot, I never really lost the junk-in-the-trunk or cellulite until I started lifting.
I tolerate lifting, but I LOVE RUNNING. I am simply happier on days I get out and run. It's like meditating. I need it for stress relief, to clear my mind, to refocus, and to just exist for a while in my own private space uninterrupted by the demands of kids or work etc.
I do think that running has given me an overall very slim physique. But mostly, it gave me a lot of confidence. I feel more proud of my body even if it's not perfect, because I feel like my body is so incredibly functional.0 -
Here are my before and after. Before was 2007 at 289 lbs. After is 2011 after completing my first 10k at 187 lbs.
Wow - you, my dear, are a machine!0 -
Hope to join you all in a few months! You all look great!0

I've been running for about 4 months on and off. The weather has been disgusting so it's been sporadic. I downloaded the Zombies, Run! 5K app on my Android, it makes it more like a game and less like exercise.
My advice - load up the iPod with a tonne of great music and start slow...15 second run, 1 minute walk - 10 times. Work your way up to it so you ENJOY it and don't feel bad when you are out of breath after only a short distance. Everyone has to start somewhere, and learning to run is very difficult.0 -
Here is my during:
I'm down around 10 sizes, which I attribute to weight lifting as well as running. I love doing both.0 -
Here are my before and afters - I got stuck at 140lbs for awhile but when I started running I quickly dropped to my goal of 138 then lower to 134 and I felt awesome. Got a bit lazy and put some back on but running 3 days a week and lifting weights 3 days. Hope to have an updated pic soon!
