Anyone else discovered low calories are their only option?

I wasn't asking you or anyone else for advice at all if you read the title. I was simply trying to find other people in the same position as me who have tried methods recommended on here and have found success by other methods. I am just sick of reading about how people had success by eating more but as someone in this thread quite rightly pointed out has anyone actually managed to reach their goal by doing this, probably not.
It's all very well saying 'I can eat tons of food and be fit and lean' but the reality is unless you're devoting hours and hours of your time each day and have an unusually fast metabolism it just isn't reality for most of us. I want friends who are like me and in my group of friends who are at goal or close to goal they have all got there by eating lower calories except for a rare few who managed to do it another way.
In fact I haven't switched my workout tons of time and I hardly call 8 weeks of Jillian Michaels (1 workout programme) followed by 4 weeks of another type of programme (Insanity/weight training) and now 5 weeks of just weight training 3 days a week plus cardio machines constantly changing do you?
You may not think 4 months is a long time but it actually is. In that time everything I've tried based on advice in terms of calorie intake I've stuck at for around 4 weeks not a week or 2 as you say.0 -

Paragraph 1: Absolute nonsense. You obviously skipped the posted links to people that eat a normal amount of calories and have reached their goal weight then I take it?
Paragraph 2: Nonsense again. You do not need to devote hours and hours or have a super fast metabolism to be fit and lean as you put it. It's about HOW you use your time and what you fuel your body with the majority of the time.
Paragraph 3: You stated you had been weight lifting for 4 months just a few posts ago and now it's turned into 5 weeks? Which is it?
You refuse to take into consideration anything that doesn't fit into your mould of how you feel you should be losing weight. I have no idea why you asked for advice in the first place. I have people on my friends list who have commented on this thread (on my news feed), these people know their s*it and know how to get a decent body, but they won't touch your thread with a barge pole because of your past responses and they way you have replied thus far. It's a shame as there is some fantastic advice to be taken on here if you just broaden your mindset.0 -

#1 eating 800-1000 calories a day..with do SO MUCH damage to your metabolism its ridiculous...please eat.
#2 with this amount of calories, yes you will lose weight, but you're creating an eating disorder and are starving yourself.
#3 You need to eat at least your BMR amount of calories...however with exercise your body needs more.
Please seek a new doctor and or nutritionist. The one you saw obviously doesn't have any idea what their talking about.
not necessarily. these statements cannot be blanketed as truth for all humans.
omg what? this is true for all humans LOL we do mess our metabolism, and yes if you feel you have to eat that low of cals to lose weight that is creating an eating disorder. You are losing weight for looks. There is no heath added to that fitness lifestyle. That is not a healthy way of thinking. You would sacrifice your metabolism for a thin body? That's not mentally healthy. This eating well and exercising is for long lasting results, for health, and because she doesn't have health care right now she should look at a program that will prevent any ailments in the future. Honey this is your chance to make a difference in how often you use the health care in your old age. Also choosing to eat under what your body needs if it's in a coma and not moving? that's not mentally healthy. Something is wrong here. Is this for health and fitness, or temp gains and looks? Have you ever seen the photo's of arms and bums when you diet to lose weight? they lack definition, lifting will get you results. Google photo's. I have not done one lick of cardio once and am only lifting and eating 1800 cals on rest days and 2000 cals on lifting days. I am 5'5 and weight 120. My weight has not changed but I have lost a total of 5 inches all over just from lifting. If it's not working just go back for advice, and please never use a scale, if you keep the same pair of pants to try on as a progress report, record what you can lift so you can see improvements and log inches you will see your progress. Don't even look at the scale. Ive seen photo's of a girl who had the belly flab and love handles and lose all the fat and have rock hard abs and was 10 lbs heavier at the end of her journey. Hopefully you can find the right person to talk to because the way your headed is the same fate as your mom. And please tell your mom she needs a new doctor. I cant believe that was medical advice.
nope. totally not true for everyone....LOL. an eating disorder is not in fact started just because one eats at a high deficit some of the time. just simply not. true. and especially not true for everyone. laughable all the emotion going on here!
lol omg you and her should become mfp friends! you can read my post and take NOTHING from it that I said? I did not at all say an eating disorder is caused by a fluctuation in calories. Look at my diary. I don't get the same amount daily...
I SAID IF YOU ARE WILLING TO PUT YOUR HEALTH IN JEPOARDY FOR A FITNESS GOAL THAT IS THE START OF A DISORDER. HEALTH AND FITNESS CAN TAKE YEARS NOT WEEKS AND IF YOU SIMPLY CANNOT WAIT THAT IS NOT A HEALTHY ATTITUDE. THIS NOT ONLY TAKES HARD WORK BUT TAKES PATIENCE. MY PERSONAL TRAINER TOLD ME IT WOULD TAKE ABOUT A YEAR AND GUESS WHAT 30 DAYS IN I CAN SEE THAT IVE ONLY LOST 5 INCHES TOTAL AND NO WEIGHT. SO I REALIZE THAT EATING HEALTHY AND WORKING OUT TAKES TIME AND IM NOT GOING TO MESS UP MY METABOLISM TO GET QUICKER RESULTS. WORST CASE SHE CAT WEAR A BIKINI UNTIL NEXT SUMMER BIG DEAL. IF SHE BUILT MUSCLE MASS, MUSCLE TAKES MORE ENERGY SO HER WILL BURN MORE CALS JUST HAVING MUSCLE. SO YEAH WHAT SHES DOING, COME TO ME IN TWO YEARS AND TELL ME IF YOU GAINED ANYTHING BACK.0 -
It sounds to like you've completely missed the point of TDEE - 20%, which is to lose body fat while retaining muscle mass. But who knows? Maybe losing muscle along with water and fat merely to achieve a drop on a scale will be a good look on you.
Even MFP recommends netting no less than 1200 cals per day. At your professed 8500-9000 cal intake weekly minus 3000 cals burned, you are averaging a net daily caloric intake of 786 to 857 calories. And you think THIS is your "only option".
Then again, if you think 5'6" and 111 lbs is a healthy ideal, it all makes a bit more sense to me.0 -
To the last poster not sure who you're referring to but firstly I am not talking about eating 8500-9000 calories - 3000 for calories burned as that would be way too little. I was actually talking about eating that amount in total.
Secondly, no it's unlikely that 111lbs for someone who's 5'6" is healthy but my goal weight is 119 lbs at 5'4" although that's not important as my main goal is to get to 22% body fat, whatever my weight and I didn't drop any body fat at all by eating higher calories.
Sexymuffintop I have been using weights in my workouts for 4 months in total ie. throughout the whole time I was doing Jillian Michaels body revolution although I only used weights up to 15lbs then and after that I started lifting heavier weights in the gym without following a DVD programme so It hasn't turned into 5 weeks as you put it. I've actually been lifting heavier weight for less time that's all as I realised that with JMBR I was unlikely to see noticeable results.0 -
Did you read the links?0
-
Yes I saw the links and also the utube videos which I've seen before. The success stories are great but what works for some doesn't work for all. We don't know the history of those people either. This was my main reason for posting this thread, i was curious to see if there were others out there who could give me further tips based on my experience if they'd had similar experiences. All I keep reading is the same old same old ie. stuff like forget the scales it's inch loss than matters, I lost several inches in a month but no scale weight etc. or TDEE -20 is designed to drop body fat. Thats great if you see those results but I lost just a few inches in 4 months not 1 month and TEE -20% didn't give me any fat loss at all after several weeks.0
-
I can only lose when I consume about 1,066 calories. I found this number by reading a post about the Biggest Loser online somewhere. You take your weight and multiply it by 7 (they multiply it by 6 on the show for fast results). I tried the In Place Of a Roadmap thing for about a month and it didn't help at all, I thought I had been eating too little before hand but it turns out I've actually been eating way too much. So eating much fewer calories has done wonders for me!
Do this to lose weight but remember weight = fat, water, muscle and bone mass) Use TDEE if you want to lose body fat as for every lb of body weight lost 25% of that will be muscle
Following the advice biggest loser has given you, I'm sorry but 1470 calories for someone of my height and lean mass i would just become non existant.
TDEE -20% deficit set at a level you know you are going to work out say 2 times a week then do not eat your exercise calories back.
I did try that with the TDEE and did not have success. But thank you for your help!
Just as a question how long did you try it for? if you're wanting to try again i'm happy to help you out.

I tried it for about 40 days. I'm not really interested in trying it again. I feel great the way I'm doing it, I feel happier and lighter (in a very good way!) and I don't feel deprived or left wonting for more food.0 -

You are either a troll, or this is just really sad. 600 calories is not good, and I don't care what a any "doctor" says. You will stall. You need to do your own research.0 -

I really don't think anyone should just up and cut calories like that, you may be losing a lot but is it in a healthy way?? I mean I at lest tried following a certain method with more calories and when that didn't work I found a good balance for myself where I'd get enough nutrition and still lose. I recommend you eat more than 600 calories especially when working out. Sounds like you have the mindset of an anorexic!0 -
I conclude that you didn't do it right., based on a thread I remember from a few months ago.0

Please expand, how is it even possible to not do it right? You are only going by the time I've been on MFP and a so called vague memory of something I said (which you haven't even really explained) but what about the 2 years beforehand when I ate more, hardly trained much and gained 23 lbs? According to many on here that should have been my 'reset' as i was eating much lower calories before that and then increased them and was eating at just above TDEE in average. So the real conclusion is I remain unable to lose at all except for when I eat around 1200 cals combined with daily workouts.0

So go do it! Eat what you want but good lord could this thread die now! I think we all realise after 8 pages of this you aren't getting the answers you want and you are going to do what you think is best for you which indeed is your right. This thread is going nowhere fast. Just let it die.0 -

If only you had done some training during that time, to build back your muscle with those calories, instead of packing on the fat with those calories, then you'd have been doing it right. You'd currently have calorie-burning, lean muscle in place of the bulging fat...and you'd be able to eat as much as you like, while still continuing to train, without gaining new fat. You have no idea how close you were. Of course, you are training *now*....you could just eat around maintenance *now*, while training until you have your muscle back and turn your body into a fat-burning machine, after which you could implement a very quick and efficient cut. But that'd probably take too long, wouldn't it.....:huh:0 -
Thanks for the post. Yes you may be right, I may have been very close to being able to change things when I was eating more and not training very much if I'd only trained more and eaten the same way but who knows. I would love to keep eating at TDEE for a bit longer because I love eating. The issue is I'm not prepared to spend another miserable summer being in a hot country and hiding away indoors covered up because stripping off in front of friends or strangers makes me too self-conscious, especially when I see their faces when they try and avoid looking at my rolls of fat! It makes me too unhappy and I become introverted which affects other areas of my life and means I can't go out and enjoy myself and that causes rows and has other knock on effects. I can't help the way I feel and I won't let my weight destroy my confidence so I have to do something about it now.
As summer comes with my current training schedule I am hoping that by eating more salads and protein meals as it's too hot to eat heavy carb laden foods I might start losing more anyway and if that happens I'll increase my calorie intake quite happily but we will see.
I'm extremely sedentary except for workouts so what a lot of people don't really think about is how many calories you actually burn by doing day to day activities like walking to and from work or having an active job/lifestyle and for most people it's probably 10 times what I burn with my current lifestyle so that probably helps them eat much more and lose weight. There are so many variables which can effect things which people don't often consider.0 -
Well, it's good to hear that you believe it's possible. As for not wanting to go another Summer in your current state...I understand that too (and I live in Greece, so I understand it 100%). But I have a few more years of this under my belt, and I can tell you that you will not be satisfied. Getting rid of rolls is great...but it's never enough. You want to look fit, but the lifestyle that you describe will not get you there. I've been skinnyfat many times in my life and I was NEVER satisfied. It is only now that I realize that it's amazingly simple to get the body I want. I'm in a challenge group right now and I have to meet certain requirements. After 2 weeks of getting in as many side lunges and squats as I could throughout the day (between sitting on the couch and entertaining my daughter...before dinner...before bed...after a trip to the toilet...WHENEVER I could)...I now have a better butt than I've ever had in my life. I still have fat to get rid of in my midsection...but when it's gone, I'm going to have a great *kitten* and not a single ounce of cellulite. The fact that I walk everywhere is what prevents me from ballooning out of control, but it is NOT what is giving me a great *kitten*. Just some dedication and MAKING time ( a few minutes here and a few minutes there) is what will give me a great *kitten*. And you can have it too. Just challenge yourself to do more and fuel your body properly. It's a winning formula and once it becomes ***habit***, it's as if the weight just FALLS off.

Thanks, that's just what I need.......someone who is motivational not negative and spiteful like a lot of people on here. I'm determined to continue training hard now so I know I'll look the way I want to in the end. I am not going to drop calories too low as I really don't want to feel deprived anyway so 1200 will probably be my absolute minimum at the moment, maybe 1300 I'm going to try it and see if I can still lose something for the summer.
I will also try and implement more activity into my day. I already walk whenever I can but I live in a tiny village so it's not possible to walk to the supermarket or places like that. I bought a gym ball a couple of weeks ago and sit on it instead of a chair for part of each day so that I'm moving more. Maybe I could run up and down my strairs more often during the day too and implement side lunges or other things too. I don't know about Greece but Spain is now close to 30 degrees already and will only get hotter from now on so I need to drop fat and soon! Maybe in September I'll re-visit eating more again and hopefully this summer I'll be able to keep training hard as the summers are the hardest time for me to exercise due to the heat. Swimming is definitely possible though so I can do that a couple of times a week and the other days I'll suffer in the gym as walks are also going to be difficult with the sun.0 -

This part I kinda get. At 120-something pounds I didn't like to wear summer clothes either (obviously thought I was too fat). At 240-something pounds I had a "f**k off* attitude and wore anything that I damn well pleased. The difference being about 25 years of living and learning that only you can make you happy and what other people may think of you isn't any of your concern. Perhaps you could concentrate more on your inside than your outside for awhile.0 -
If you are really struggling to lose weight at higher calories it might be worth getting your BMR properly tested or getting something like a bodymedia fit armband, which detects your calorie burn.
The hardest part about dieting seems to be not knowing exactly what your body is doing enough to manipulate it so some hard numbers might give you peace of mind that you're either eating enough at low calories, or you could eat more and still lose, albeit slowly.0 -

Sorry, just that I've had so many people who haven't read the things I've said and form conclusions that's all!
When I set MFP cals to lose weight and ate back exercise calories some days I was up to 2000-2100 and did that for a while before realising it was too much. Then I did TDEE -20% which ended up being about 1800 which again was too much for me. Then I gradually lowered and still didn't lose weight so here I am!
Yes I am trying 1250 calories this week and hopefully won't need to go any lower. How did you overcome your planteau?
Honestly 1250 is low but not super low.
I was stuck at 1800 cals and could not lose weight for about a month. I started to add in refeed days. When you diet for a long time your hormone levels change it affects leptin levels which has a direct affect on metabolic rate.
Before that though my first plateau was because of 2 reasons:
-I didn't adjust my goals for my newer lower weight
- I wasn't weighing food as accurately as I thought
I weigh everything and or measure it. I was overestimating by a few hundred a day.0 -
I just don't feel comfortable carrying visible fat and I find it horrible to look at on other people too. It isn't healthy and I don't like it. Obviously a small amount of body fat it normal for most people who don't exercise and even my thin friends have it but 31% like I am now it's just not nice!
I've been 178 lbs before and I didn't care so much, I never went to hot places so I could cover up and people always commented on my clothes so I didn't really think about how bad I looked. I dread to think what my body fat was then. To be honest since losing some of the weight and having been 122lbs when I got compliments about how amazing I looked I am not prepared to stay like this and I'm not happy as I am now. I look at other people and know I don't look as bad as many others but it's not good enough for me. I can't look at pictures of myself now if my arms or showing or if I'm in a bikini.
If I was lazy and didn't try to improve my body then I wouldn't care so much because it would be my fault but when I'm putting in all this work I want it to show. Personally I don't like looking at fat, whether it's on me or someone else! Since being bigger and losing I've realised that it just isn't pretty or healthy to carry so much excess. I wouldn't accept it if my boyfriend was fat and I wouldn't find him attractive or feel he's doing the best for his health so I I'm not happy to accept it on myself either. A friend of mine is super fit and looks great but her husband is fat and doesn't exercise with a beer belly. She says she loves him like that so he just keeps on eating and getting fatter and now he's been told he's got very high cholesterol. It's partly her fault in my opinion.
Everyone is different but how you look on the outside as well as what you're like on the inside is important to me. I know someone who is fairly overweight and spends all her money on designer clothes and hair, make up etc. Material things like that don't matter when her health is suffering due to being overweight.0 -

Yes, we have already had our first mini-heatwave and it is making exercise a little "messier" (as in: hot sweaty mess), but that's what exercise is. I will say, that with the heat, the body changes it's intake too. Even I, with a daily calorie goal of 2000, am finding myself not hungry enough to eat that much during the hot days and my intake has dropped significantly due to that. The body is good at finding the equilibrium it needs. However, you must learn to understand and listen to the body. I could never do that until I started eating more. In a chronically underfed state, I couldn't understand what my body was telling me (or I could understand, but was trying too hard to impose something else on it). In addition, my psychology of eating has changed drastically, so that I have a much better relationship with food. Before (when I did the very low cal dieting thing), I was of the mindset of, "I'll just get skinny and that'll be that." But now I know that there is no such thing as "just get skinny and be done with it". MAINTENANCE was a word that I had never even contemplated. Now, I know that I have to do NOW what I intend to do FOREVER (only difference is a matter of degree). And for "forever", I intend to EAT...and now that I know the truth, I intend to workout daily...but in both cases the degree will differ between now vs. maintenance (I eat less now than I will in the future--at a modest deficit; and I workout more now than I will in the future--probably, but who knows!). If you think this is a "one time deal", you'll be doing it over and over and over for the rest of your life. But if you admit that this is something that must be maintained, then you can set yourself up to get to where you want to be and STAY there. At least these are the things that I have learned.
Good luck!0 -

Judgement much?
A lot of people here are fat and even though we are trying to lose weight you still have to BE FAT while you do that.
Comments like this can be really hurtful and counterproductive and coming to a forum about weight loss where people are trying to help and support each other and saying how much fat disgusts you is really tactless.0 -
Yes! I have been on a 1200/day calorie diet for 6&1/2 months now. I was losing weight steadily but I kept reading that I was hurting myself by not eating 15 or 20 % below my tdee. So I bumped my calorie level and started working out and eating back those calories as well. During this period I lost NO scale weight. I also did not lose any inches. I have recently went back to my 1200 cals and immediately lost 2 lbs! Yes, even when I exercise I still eat the cals back. I believe if you are logging correctly, some people still have to eat less to lose anything. Everyone is different and as long as you're not hungry and you are getting sufficient nutrients, do what works for you!
If you did TDEE - %, you are not supposed to eat back your exercise calories. They are already figured in to the calculation.
^^^^^^ This ^^^^^^0 -
Sorry if you think it's judgemental but I think more people should be honest about fat and maybe we wouldn't have the problems with Obesity that we have in the world. I wish I'd had someone be honest with me when I was at my heaviest of 178 lbs and a UK size 16. I felt uncomfortable as I was but all I was ever told was that I looked 'fine' and how 'cute' my fat arms were along with my chubby cheeks! That doesn't help someone accept they need to do something to improve their health and in those days I must have been carrying at least 40% body fat and I had high blood pressure.
Of course people who've already accepted this and started to try and lose the excess fat will still be fat during the process and of course we have to live with that while we're losing but I don't see why it should be taboo to say that fat is unttractive to many people. If I see someone over overweight in the gym I feel nothing but positive thoughts for that person because they're on the road to good health which is great to see.
Having said that I'd never go up to anyone and say something to make them feel bad but judging by comments I hear around me when someone who is obviously around me walks by I think a lot of people think the badly of people who are overweight. Maybe that's why I don't feel comfortable with my fat on show in a bikini because I know that's how people talk about others and I'm aware that they're possibly saying similar things about me too.
I don't expect to be perfect and I never will be as I have stretch marks which I've had since puberty but that's something I can't change. When there are things I can change then why not try and do something about it to the best of my ability?0 -

When there are things I can change then why not try and do something about it to the best of my ability?
Actually I completely disagree about your idea of 'honesty' and how it wil help people stop being fat. People know they are fat and views like yours, that fat people are disgusting and when you see fat people you FEEL disgusted, is what drives people into wanting to lose fat as fast as possible, and trying crash diets that give fast results but bounce them back to being even fatter than they were before.
The quick fix diet industry and fat hate and shame are making fat people fatter and are not making more thin people. If telling people they are fat and that it is disgusting worked we wouldn't have such a huge problem.
The thing is you say that you have positive thoughts towards fat people at the gym but would you have those same thoughts if you saw that same person in the street? or in the line for fast food? No, I don't think you would. You have no idea what choices people are making day to day and you cant judge people by the snippets of life you are privy to. That person on the street might be running everyday, you don't know. That person in line might be queuing for a friend or a spouse and are going home to have a salad later, you dont know.
It isn't fair, and it isn't nice to judge people when you have no idea who they are or what they do.
It isn't fair and it isn't nice to ask for advice and help FROM FAT PEOPLE and then say that you find them disgusting.
I came in here to give you some advice because I want to help and support everyone on this forum, but if you saw me on the street what would you think of me?
It makes me sad, and I dont think this is the place for that kind of attitude.0
