Bananas are to be avoided? Please explain

I've only recently began to take control of my eating habits and I began exercising. I'm trying to lose weight and have lost 12lbs in 2 weeks. But I realize I won't maintain that loss rate. I'm trying to eat healthy so when I read where some people claim you shouldn't eat bananas I became concerned. I love bananas and eat them occasionaly as I do oranges, apples, pears, ...etc. What's the deal? Should I not eat bananas. I would like to have a better understanding of this so I appreciate any info you can share.

    Nothing at all wrong with bananas as long as they fit into your calorie "budget". Bananas are more calorie dense than some other fruits, so you need to take that into consideration and the stage of ripeness will affect sugar levels, if that is a concern for you (diabetic or pre-diabetic).

    I think it's cause their higher in sugar and calories per gram than most other fruits. Their very good for you though, as their full of potassium and other vitamins. I just peel mine and weigh it before I eat it. :)

    I eat 1-4 bananas every day. usually 2. Just stick to a reasonable calorie deficit and you'll do great... assuming you don't have any food intolerances. :smile:

    I agree with allshebe - I try to cut down on bananas because I struggle with high blood sugar (although I will probably have one today because I love them). If you don't, they can be an excellent prepackaged snack with lots of potassium.

    Nope. I eat bananas OFTEN (someimes every day for weeks)! They're my favorite fruit and I've still lost nearly 100 lbs. :)

    Eat them, they are higher in calories, but good lord they are good for you, eat them. You will find so much BS on here, but a ton of support as well.

    Eat them, as you said, you only eat them occasionally. It's really no big deal. Just to reiterate, they are fine, just high in calories and sugar compared to some other fruits.

    The only reason why you shouldn't eat bananas is if you are allergic to them, can't tolerate them, or don't like them. They are healthy when eaten in moderation and within the ADA guidelines of a serving size. The only foods that can be safely cut out of your diet are those high in refined sugar. Use the food pyramid as your guide.

    ETA: there is a separate food pyramid for vegans/vegetarians that outline healthy eating guidelines for them as well. Meat isn't essential at all for a healthy diet.

    I eat 1-2 bananas a day. Fab post workout snack.

    Hasn't hindered my weightloss at all.

    Bananas are awesome. I eat 2-4 per day, along with apples, oranges, tangerines, strawberries, blueberries, etc. Can't have enough fruits and veggies! Just make sure they fit into your calorie allowance and you'll be good.

    I think anytime someone says to avoid a certain fruit or vegetable they have gone a little crazy. Or low carb. Both are the same to me :)

    Nobody got here by eating a particular fruit or vegetable.

    This! sometimes 2! I just think bananas get a bad name cause they are more calorie dense than most other fruits.

    I love bananas, especially on cereal or by themselves with a tbsp of peanut butter. I have also lost over 100 lbs total.

    Bananas are good for you (potassium), but they contain ALOT of sugar--just stay within what your food plan allows :)

    Banana's are fine :)

    They are just a heavy carb and calories item, I will eat 1/2 - 1 full medium/large size banana a day inside a smoothie, I try to limit it as the cals from a banana add up fast and I am also trying very hard to keep my carb count down.
