The only song I can think of is "I Want Candy" by The Strangeloves, which was covered by Bow Wow Wow.

.anyone know of any songs originally done by men that women did just as well?
Trying to prove a point to my sexist guy friend, who tells me i cant sing a song in a performance originally done by a man because im a woman...

Joan Baez did about a million and one Bob Dylan songs....

Here's a woman singing "Paint it Black" by the Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger's a man.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXOXEYk7nxo

Jordis Unga doing an amazing cover of "man who sold the world" by David Bowie, also covered by Nirvana (Kurt Cobain) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UP6YyT1XIKo

There are so many, but honestly this doesn't even deserve a response, because he's being very very silly. Tell him to STFU and get a life. Look on you tube, especially things like America's got talent and similar, because you'll find loads of women covering songs that were originally performed by men.

another woman doing a Nirvana cover (Lithium) - in a much more grungy style too (not heard many women sing in this style but she proves it can be done!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5qOFgfv2Bs

It works the other way too. This man does the most amazing cover of "I will always love you" by Dolly Parton, more famous for its cover by Witney Houston. this guy's singing is amazing

One of my favorites is Tori Amos' cover of Nirvana's "Smells like Teen Spirit"
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnxwuB0IzYw

There is also a cover of "Rainbow Connection" (originally performed by the incomparable Kermit THE Frog) by Sarah McLahlan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAEoPKwBJfo

And one last one, The Cardigans doing "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzgZJEpLuw0

There are tons and tons, the dude's being a twerp & doesn't even deserve a response.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Ann Wilson of Heart yet. Heart started as a Led Zeppelin cover band and Ann can totally rock their stuff out. Check out the performance of Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center Honors for Led Zeppelin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCgVNx2VyM0

Ann & Nancy Wilson come out at about the 6:45 mark after Lenny Kravitz. Their performance brings tears to Robert Plant's eyes and Jimmy Page has a huge grin through the whole thing. It's a blast watching the cuts showing the guys rockin out in their theater box. Ann can belt the crap outta Rock and Roll too. You can find a few others on youtube easy enough.

Marie Laforet, a french singer, covered "Paint It Black" by The Rolling Stones, It's in french though, so if you know french it's a really good cover.

I like Janis Joplin's version of "Me and Bobby McGee" better than Kris Kristofferson's original. Also, Nina Simone's version of "Sinner Man" may be one of my favorite songs ever. I'm not sure how well that fits with what you're looking for, since it's a traditional song that's been covered by a lot of people, but the most famous version is Les Baxter's, so I figure it counts ^^ Actually, I prefer a lot of Nina Simone's covers to the original versions, like "Feeling Good," which was originally sung, though not written, by Cy Grant.

Totally agree with you on Janis. She kills that one.

First song that comes to my mind is I Told You So by Carrie Underwood. Randy Travis himself said she made the song better.

Make sure you watch the entire video. "Better suited for your vocals"

Glad you liked it. One of my best live concert moments was seeing Van Halen in Seattle on their 5150 tour when Sammy Hagar says, "Ladies and gentlemen... Ann Wilson!", and she comes out on stage and they perform Rock and Roll. Being Ann's home crowd, everyone went absolutely nuts. It was the next best thing to seeing Zep themselves perform it.

I wouldn't put so much effort into this.

Just tell him to go **** himself and/or eat a bag of ****s.

    Exactly this.

You don't need to prove yourself. The fact that you are trying so hard to do so gives him the upper hand.

Also, the original should never be compared to a cover. The original always wins, no matter who its by (imo).
