The first law of Thermodynamics: delta U = Q - W + (E - food energy) does not care if E comes from wheat grass or Doritos.

I thought the first law of thermodynamics was you do not talk about thermodynamics?

Bananas made me fat. If only I hadn't eaten a banana a day, I would still fit into my college wardrobe.

I remember your banana eating days fondly.

You will not get fat from eating a banana
You will not get fat from eating fried chicken
You will not get fat from eating ice cream
You will get fat from eating too much of any food. The end.

Um, this isn't true at all. Yesterday I ate 1lb of chicken and I weighed myself before and after. When I was finished, I weighed 1lb more.

Explain that with your "science". :noway:

    Just watch your portion Control.

I have been losing weight by keeping just a little under my 1200 calories.
Since I can only do minimal exercise.

If you don't know your blood type, the broscience is invalid.

Wheat grass isn't Paleo. Your argument is invalid.

No , this is not correct. You have to eat these foods after 7 pm for them to make you fat.

But not after midnight, or you turn into a gremlin.

Aye. The sad thing though, when you try to make them less ignorant, they fight you tooth and nail like it's their religion. And that's why I rarely say a word.

You are smart. And now you have MFP where you can speak your mind and there MIGHT on certain days be someone rational around to hear it. If a tree falls in the forest...but everyone's loudly bashing corn does anyone hear it?

What if u are type 1 diabetic and inject insulin??? The insulin works and brings your blood sugar down BUT is there resistance and resisitance making you fat???

Before you decide to trust the corn industry that sugar is sugar, read http://www.health.harvard.edu/newsletters/Harvard_Heart_Letter/2011/September/abundance-of-fructose-not-good-for-the-liver-heart

Personally, I'll avoid fructose except as found in whole fruits, thank you. Hubby has high triclycerides. What did his doctor tell him to avoid eating? Fruit.

What we know about how our bodies cope with fats and sugars is changing. Calorie figures for foods are based on laboratory combustion of those foods and measurement of energy release in the form of heat. The human body is not a fire in a laboratory. We do digest different things differently and realize different amounts of energy creation from their digestion even when calories may be the same.

This does not mean we should forget about the gross relationship between calories and weight gain or loss. Rather it means we should be smart about what we eat and not be seduced by HCFS-laced foods specially developed to taste good and entice us to eat more.

So, indeed, no food "makes" you gain weight but some foods are more likely to enable it than others.

Now some science about insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is linked with having too much visceral fat in the abdomen, in other words, fat around your vital organs. This fat behaves differently from the fat under your skin (subcutaneous fat). Read http://www.health.harvard.edu/newsweek/Abdominal-fat-and-what-to-do-about-it.htm for an explanation.

How can we shed visceral fat? By getting our weight under control and regular exercise.

    Yes, for 21 years..........

I agree that one food does not make you fat, HOWEVER, I find I lose quicker when I keep my carb sources from fruit and veg and focus on protein. Not saying carbs make you gain weight, but for MY body it's harder with grains and starches.

What about those of us diagnosed with insulin resistance that have a BMI of 21ish and body fat 26%? We do exist and we may not notice the signs of it because everyone tells us you have to be overweight to have insulin resistant or have PCOS. All I knew was that my hormones were out of whack, I didn't feel well and that I was tired all the time. Boom... doctor says watch sugar and white carbs and put me on Metformin.

You CAN lose weight on diets with these things in them, but you may not know the damage you are doing to your body. I would suggest someone get the O.K. from the doctor before beginning the "ice cream" diet.

this thread had great potential, but there are always skeptics who don't get it :grumble:

It's wonderful the way the CICO folks almost completely downplay the impact of hormones on fat storage.
