Public Shaming

This is not about weight loss, being healthy or any of that.

I read something this morning that made me sick to my stomach.
People in this country, not all, but some .. have the audacity to write the most racist comments about a little boy who sang the national anthem last night for game 3 of the NBA finals.

HE'S AMERICAN!!!

Here is the link: http://publicshaming.tumblr.com/post/52763976629/racist-basketball-fans-pissed-a-mexican-american-boy

The ignorance is just disgusting.

Chime in ..

Im literally embarrassed.. as you said .. this is a child.

Why should he be exposed to such ignorant people ?

He was on the news this morning and said that he was confused. He said, "Yes, Im hispanic.. but Im American. I was born here and raised here. Im not illegal. I dont understand why people are so mad at me."

That crushed me to hear him say that.

I'm trying to type something to properly convey my disgust regarding this scenario, however nothing seems right. Seriously America, can we not get over the racial bull**** already?

what defines America more than someone from another country coming here and doing something so fantastic?

hopeflly most of the tweets were attempts at humor and not racism.

Should any kid have to deal with such stupidty? Let alone it being on a national stage?

So he wore a Mariachi outfit .. who cares?

He's a cute kid that got the call at 4PM to come sing since the original person didnt make it.

Even if he were an adult and not a child, these comments are still wrong. The people tweeting this nonsense just show who they really are. Ignorant, racist people.

    Wow wow wow...

I'm Canadian and we have multiple MULTIPLE people of all decents singing our national anthem ALL THE TIME!

Actually, a lot of Americans singing it for us!

Either way, these peeps need to learn some freakin' manners! Their parents didn't do a very good job raising them with respect.

Im proud of him for A) Singing it in front of all those people and B) handling these rediculous people's comments with an amazing level of class.

He's a trooper and even at such a young age he's able to rise above it and not stoop to their level.

Agree, we all need to speak out when we hear racist comments. We cant be silent anymore.

First, it is really terrible and I feel so sorry for this boy and his family.

Second, this topic is too controversial and will get locked. There are groups for these kinds of discussions.

I was gonna post this earlier. People are idiots. I say some offensive crap but c'mon, the kid is 11, singing in front of 30,000 people and millions world wide! And he killed it!!! Pretty proud that a local kid stepped in like that. In place of Darius Rucker, nonetheless....

Wait....Anonymous Racism on the internet? No way!

Seriously though, racism on the internet is like saying my pen writes with ink or maybe that the sun rose this morning.

    Disgusting? Yes
    Surprising? Not in the slightest.

As a white american...saw the national anthem didn't even think anything about his race. I might have been a bit singist, since I was highly jealous that a 10 year old can sing that well and my singing makes babies cry.

And I mean it's basketball. How can you be a racist spurs basketball fan? Your favorite player would be Matt Bonner.

With that being said, this isn't a bit surprising. Go to any website that allows users to comments on news articles and its filled with people denigrating other peoples race, nationality, religion etc. This is actually kind of toned down from the usual vitrriol you find on the web.

Too controversial? As in someone would support the other side ?

I can't speak for the entire MFP community, but I seriously doubt that someone would be able to in any intelligent fashion be able to support the comments that were made about this kid.

I think those that tweeted should be ashamed of themselves.. period, the end.

i don't understand how it is controversial to discuss how terrible it is that anyone, including this child, has to endure such hate.

Hostility is sometimes apt. MFP can suck it and lock it. It will just come back up again. Things like this need to be discussed, and anyone can try to crush that, but it will just keep coming back up.

Please refer to my previous post. Topics about racism, regardless of whether the discussion is that it is 'good' or 'bad', generally get shut down in the main forums.

the whole human race is a group. What group would this exactly be apt in? "People that hate racists", or "Latinos unite"?
