Pizza?

The thing with calories is, most of the time, you're just trying to keep track as best you can. Everyone is going to be over or under on their count almost everyday. You can make it yourself and weigh every single item, and even then you are likely to be off. The whole point of calorie counting is to be aware of what you are eating and how much. You can take the same two products off the shelve and they will both have the same calories listed, but if you have them actually test in a lab, you will most likely find that they are both incorrect.
Bottom line, if the pizza you are eating is listed on the company website, go by those calories. If it's not, go with something in the database that closely resembles the pizza your eating. Fit them into your day or go over once in a while just for fun.
Eating pizza, or any food that you enjoy, is not giving in. When you look at it like that, then you're just making it harder for yourself to stick with whatever plan you have. Pizza has been the reason for me to be over 1500 calories in a day, and yet, I'm still making decent progress.
Think of this as a long term thing. What you want in the future is what you can have now, if you plan on cutting something out forever...for whatever reason...then cut it out now. Personally...

NY Style or Chicago Style?
how about a chicago style stuffed with a ny style?
or would that be like dividing by zero?

I love pizza, but I tend to make it on my own. If I do order it from a place, I make sure its from a shop that has its nutrition facts online. Its not 100% accurate but it gives me a rough idea of what to put in MFP. Hmm... now I want pizza for dinner...0

When I make pizza at home I usually go for the Boboli crusts for when it's for both me and my husband. But, when I make a single pizza for just me I tend to use a flour tortilla, either a generic pizza sauce or a couple of tablespoons of BBQ sauce, reduced fat mozzarella cheese and veggie toppings. This keeps it a little healthier and you can eat the whole tortilla yourself. I usually buy the taco size, it's usually enough to eat for a meal. I also tend to add a fruit to my meal as well so I don't burp up the pizza all day. lol0

most of the time you can find out by searching for the brand, what is on it and size. If you make your own go by ingredients you put on it and divide by how many pieces you cut it into.0

I honestly love pizza.. i know i cant eat it all the time. I would have a slice or two every month but in between i eat healthy everyone deserves a cheat day!! I have lost 50 pounds since February and still more to go.. you dont have to be miserable while losing wieght doll0

I love pizza so much that even though I'm lactose intolerant, I still manage to work it in a couple times a month at least. I take lactaid to help combat the effects..lol.
Now, unless you are making your own pizza, trying to be exact is going to be hard. A lot of places will list their breakdown, like Dominoes, Pizza Hut and I think maybe Whole Foods does too, not sure. But if not, no need to panic. Just choose the closest pizza in the database that you can find and log that.
You can't always be exact. but just because it "could" be off by a bit doesn't mean you should stress out and then deprive yourself. Food is meant to fuel your body and be enjoyed. It isn't the enemy and the combo of bread, cheese, veggies or/and meat isn't going to magically make it bad for you or destroy your progress if you can't find the exact calorie count for it0 -
I don't really care for pizza unless it is VERY good pizza. I live in TN and there is a place that serves AUTHENTIC NY style pizza that tastes like what I've had in NY.
My husband and I eat there sometimes on our "splurge day" but I still look for one with healthier toppings.
I use the calorie count from an average of similar pizza nutrition info that I've found on MFP.
Hopefully that helps.0 -

I'm curious...what toppings aren't healthy? From my experience, the topping choices are usually cheese, meat and veggies.0 -
Pizza is a trigger food for me. I don't know if I'll ever be able to eat it in moderation. But I'm likely to keep trying to on occassion lol
Having a trigger food is a sign that you are probably eating a restrictive diet.0 -
Pizza is good, I love it, but haven't had much lately since ive been counting calories. Stay away from SBARRO thats usually found at malls.... They have 740 calories a slice of pizza... 1 or two slices for a meal is not bad at all. If you really want some pizza while your dieting, try the Red Barron French Bread pizza... its only 380 calories. It fills me up and i'm a big guy. If you need something to go with that try some fat free chips or some vegetables or something that will go good with it.0

I tend to order pizza online, Domino's has a calorie counter so I use that while ordering. When I pick it up, I promptly pull off what I want and stow the rest in the fridge for later. My family actually took over and finished off my thin crust, spinach and mushroom pizza last time I ordered it. They said it was good. Thanks for the help, kids and DH....0

I eat pizza all the time! Just in moderation...
^^^Ditto, as long as I have calories alloted for the day. I had some today in fact!0 -
I definitely echo what those above me said about making your own! Thin wheat crust, tomato-based sauce, low-fat cheese and tons of veggies on top. Pizza actually starts to sound healthy. Happy baking!0

If I only eat within my budget and only ONCE in a day and not usually more then once in a week I have no problem with Pizza We make an awesome sourdough crust and make our own pizzas too.
However, when I decide to have it for breakfast and lunch the next day I DO NOT lose weight that week! lol0 -
Just buy a ready made thin based pizza from the supermarket and divide the calories. A quarter isn't too bad with lots of salad. Check the calories before you buy.0
-
Just make your own so you know what is in it! You can really make pizza at home that is just as good, and seems to be less calories.0

Ok I love pizza. Not gonna lie about it. Weight Watchers says you can have a slice but how can you accurately determine the calories in one slice of pizza? I've heard/seen so many different calorie totals but I never know which to use.... Does anyone here eat a slice of pizza once and awhile? Is it ok to just give in and have it? Would love some opinions here...
Depending on where you got the pizza the nutrition information says how many per slice on are a serving and from my experience it's a lot.0 -
I sometimes give in and get the real stuff. However, I have found a cute way to have that same pizza taste with little calories. I make pizza out of portobello mushroom caps. I fill them with marinara, top with part skim mozzarella, a few olive slices and turkey pepperonis. Bake caps in oven for 7 minutes at 350 and then take them out to add toppings....broil for 3 minutes to melt cheese. Yummers!
Pizza is my biggest vice. I have to be careful not to eat the whole pizza when I do indulge.0 -
Most pizza chains have a website with the nutrition info for their pizzas. I would check that out. I love pizza too, so I haven't nixed pizza from my diet. I can't do the cauliflower pizza crust or any other substitute either. So I get the best kind I like and eat a slice with a salad and some fruit. Satisfies the craving, and I am not blowing the diet.0

There are great recipes for flourless pizza dough. It seriously saves the calories. I made a couliflower crust veggie pizza and it was delicious!0

Pizza is ok. Most brand names are in the food database. They won't be exact but they'll be close. One day of eating pizza will not destroy your progress. When we eat pizza (about once every couple of months) I have 2-3 pieces, log it and forget about it. The way I'm eating is "normal" life for me from now on and I refuse to deprive myself completely of foods I love.0 -
IIFYM. I've been eating pizza every day but I make my own healthy personal pizzas. I eat like two or three pizzas a day as well as two or three cakes.0
-
Bump! Some of those look good!0
-
The best way is to make yours! YOu can stuff them with lots of healthy stuff, count the calories and use low calorie flatbreads for the base of split a pita in 2 and you have 2 thin crust pizzas!!0
-
I usually order large pepperoni pizza and just use papa johns nutritional info, est. 400 cal/slice. The pizza place I order from doesn't have info available I eat pizza a lot. I love it. Even the cheap frozen stuff. I often eat half a Newman's Own uncured pepperoni pizza for lunch.0
-
Yep, learn to make your own. You can control every ingredient and record the cals accurately. Plus it always tastes better than the takeout pizza anyway.
