DIET SODA!

Yesterday was my one year without soda, including diet soda!
I gave it up because I had a problem sticking to consuming it in moderation. I was drinking 4-5 cans/day. I had stains on my teeth and constantly felt bloated. Plus, I wasn't drinking any water because I was using Diet Coke to "hydrate." I did also notice that I craved more sugary foods than I do now, but that could also be attributed to eating less sugar in general.
One year off of it, and I feel much better, my teeth are whiter, and I really don't miss it.0 -
I drink 1 Diet Dr. Pepper a day. I always drink water when I eat. It boosts my water intake, its free and i dont waste the taste of my bottle of deliciousness mixing it with food. I drink my soda in the middle of the day. It has become like a treat for me. I still have issues getting my 8 glasses of H2O in a day, but I am continually working on it!! I am just glad I dont drink 3-5 soda's a day like I used to. People say "just give up that one soda it wont be hard." I then say, "__________ you"
disclaimer!!! The fill in the blank option can be used with whatever word comes to mind, its not necessarily the F bomb0 -
SURE!
DIET SODA IS GREAT IF
YOU ADD VODKA OR WHISKEY TO IT!
A new nummy here in this house is diet root beer and Captain. If you like a sweet drink, is good.0 -
Stay away from diet soda, recent science tests have shown that it actually makes you eat more.
It doesn't MAKE you eat more. Some studies INDICATE that there might be an increase in food cravings, i.e. sweets, because of the artificial sweeteners. But it is merely a correlation - if I save the 160 calories and 40 grams of sugar I'd get in a pepsi throwback by having a diet pepsi instead, I may feel like I can eat two Oreos later, for about the same calories. Or maybe I want Oreos and I chose the diet soda so I have calories left. Both fit into the connection, but neither indicate that if I hadn't had the diet soda (if I'd had water instead, say), I wouldn't have been doomed to eat the Oreos.
Also, if you're tracking your calories, and keeping them within your limit, diet soda won't suddenly make that go up. It's your choice.
And now for the anecdotal: some people (I've seen it in this post) will admit that they crave sweets more after diet soda. Some may. But not everyone - for some it will satisfy that sweet craving, which is often more psychological than based on dietary need, so the body doesn't care if it got the calories and the emotional need is satisfied. That's what it does for me, anyway.
OP - diet soda in moderation is OK. It's probably not the best for your teeth, and you want to limit yourself (just like with regular soda). Don't use it as a substitute for water, but don't feel bad if you want some.0 -
I drink it about once a month or so, when I get a craving. I find regular pop too sweet, so I prefer the taste of diet.
I also use it as a mixer very, very occasionally. If I'm piling on calories from alcohol, I try to save them elsewhere.0 -
I'm not convinced that diet soda is better or worse than regular, but I do think that all soda in general is bad for you though. So I usually drink the "real" stuff so I'm better at watching it. (I watch the calories and therefore watch the soda)
In any case I don't drink it any more than once a week. Sometimes I can go a month or two without any of it.0 -
I drink Diet Coke every day. WITH CAFFEINE! lol0
-
The only issue with diet soda that I've noted is they are REALLY high in sodium, which could contribute to water retention and bloated feeling.
NO
I just checked labels on both. 8 oz of milk has 3x the sodium as a 12 oz can of diet soda. Neither is high (120 mg vs 40)
Thank you. :flowerforyou:
I was about to say the same thing.
A 20oz bottle of Diet Coke has 70g of sodium. That's NOTHING.
Diet soda having lots of sodium is a myth. Check your labels, people.....
ETA: I drink it when I crave something sweet or want to eat something but have no calories. The diet soda is like a substitute without the calories and works perfectly.
It doesn't increase my desire for sweets, it IS my sweet craving being fulfilled.
It doesn't make me eat more, it's my zero calorie substitute for food when I have no extra calories left or am saving my calories for something else.0 -
I drink Diet Rite Cherry because it uses Sucralose (Splenda) instead of Aspratame (Nutrasweet). I prefer the taste of Nutrasweet, but it is known to stall weight loss for those in ketosis.
I drink between five and seven cans a day, and at least a gallon of water.0 -
Diet Coke is the last vice I have in this world and I refuse to give it up.
This is how I feel about my diet Mt Dew and Diet Dr Pepper. Actually I like them best mixed together 1/2 and 1/2. I call it a diet Dr Dew. I have one nearly everyday.0 -
I have heard diet sodas are only bad if they are stored above 90 degrees so as long as they are kept cold they aren't that harmful to you. But have heard other people say they can cause bladder spasms etc not sure if that is true or not. For me I like the taste of them but they do make me crave sweets a bit more so I try to buy the zero brand of soda if I have soda I'll get like a Coke Zero instead cuz thats got no calories either and taste like real pop. Actually I prefer the mio water,or snapple singles green tea,or sparkling ice if they have those or straight coffee. But coke zero isn't bad now and then. And light V-8 fusion is good too.0

Drink Diet Pepsi (2 or 3 bottles a day) and have no intentions of stopping any time soon... I don't buy into the scare mongering but if anyone feels the need to quit, it comes down to personal reasons and that is fine just means more for me.... Best of Luck :drinker:0
-
I'd completely quit my daily can of Diet Coke in the spring, switching to sparkling water when I wanted fizz. And then we bought a Sodastream to make our own fizzy water and we of course had to try a few flavours of syrup... So much for quitting pop. lol
I have a mix of regular and diet syrups. The regular ones are half sugar, half Splenda. I can live with that. And I love the Pink Grapefruit. It's my go-to flavour.0 -
So, recently I've gotten really attached to diet soda (specifically Diet, Caffeine Free Pepsi). I know there's a big kerfluffle about whether or not diet soda is awful for you, so I wanted to see what my fellow MFPers thought. Do you guys ever drink diet soda? If so, what's your favorite kind? If not, feel free to talk about why!
I partake daiy of the Caffeine free diet pepsi myself. Sometimes at the soda fountain, I will add cherry and vanilla flavorings. It hasn't killed me yet.0 -

Congratulations on your year of no soda! Back when I was a wee tot, I decided to stop drinking it and could do so cold turkey without any problems. In the past few days, I have noticed that the extra two cans of diet pop have interfered with how much water I normally drink, so I'm probably going to adjust my intake of it if that continues. I'm glad you made the right choice for yourself. :]OP - diet soda in moderation is OK. It's probably not the best for your teeth, and you want to limit yourself (just like with regular soda). No bad feelings here. c: Thank you, though!I partake daiy of the Caffeine free diet pepsi myself. Sometimes at the soda fountain, I will add cherry and vanilla flavorings. It hasn't killed me yet.
Cherry + vanilla added sounds amazing. I should find a way to add some to a future serving. o:0 -
It has been four months since I have had soda and I feel so much better (and my teeth thank me). Stay away from diet soda, recent science tests have shown that it actually makes you eat more.
yeah, i don't buy that at all....
Links proving it's correct. Soda may not directly make you eat more, but the ingredients affect certain hunger variables

yes I do diet coke
th e fake sugar in it worries me though0 -
I live off of diet drinks including soda. I keep it diet decaf mostly because for some reason my body likes to retain water when I drink only diet coke. I like diet birch beer (natural decaf) and diet decafe coke.
Is it bad for you? I'll have to ask you a question in return. Isn't EVERYTHING bad for you in one way or another? I cannot answer completely sure on how bad it may or may not be for you. I personally believe it is better than regular soda. I haven't had any bad effects as of yet.0 -
i have always been told that fizzy pops streach your stumach out
have you ever tried letting a bit of air out of the bottle before you do it back up. if you leave it long enough it's goes back to it's original shape.
All that gas is slowly getting relievsed into your stumach and putting preasure in it which helps expand your stumach and in turn makes you more hungry.
I think a little every now and then is fine but beware. also alot of sweetners are just as bad if not worse than the sugar itself
I'll keep that in mind. c:i don't always drink soda, but when I do - i prefer the real stuff, Coca Cola. Stay Thirsty my friends.
Have you tried Heritage Dr Pepper with the real sugar? It's so good. It's almost like a fancy dessert for me.
No I haven't. I may look into it but I'm not a huge soda drinker anymore. I had a Dr. Pepper 10 the other day and the taste of artificial sweetener was absolutely appauling, almost as bad as how diet coke/pepsi tastes. I'd rather have a whole can of regular coke or dr. pepper than to deal with the splenda sweetened garbage taste that those leave in my mouth.
Where can you find the heritage dr. pepper?0 -

that's very similar to the argument of smoking. if you smoke cigarettes it can cause cancer, everything causes cancer, so thus far my cigarette smoking is the least of my worries. Over consumption IS bad for you, moderation is NOT.
You can have a Big Mac, it's not going to kill you. However, eat a big mac three times a day - you may want to see a heart specialist after a while.0 -
I was drinking coke zero or diet dr pepper everyday, but decided to cut back for a couple of reason. I'm saving a lot of money, I have more natural energy (i was drinking one or two cans a day plus 2 cups of strong coffee) and I have less bloat. Now, I just grab a bottle when I go to the store for groceries or have some when we go out to eat. I also notice that I'm not craving sweets as much. I am not against diet sodas at all, but cutting back has been good for me.0

I wasn't a daily diet soda drinker but I did like the occasional Coke Zero. I've been off any kind if soda and artificial sweeteners for just over 2 months and I've noticed a decrease in my sugary cravings.0 -
I drink a can every day.0

Myth: Read the nutritional values. All of the diet soda I drink has only 1% of my daily sodium intake per serving. Hearing that it is high in sodium always makes me giggle a bit.0 -
I'll have a Diet Dr. Pepper when I'm out with friends, if the place we go carries it. Otherwise, not a big soda drinker. I don't think there's anything WRONG with drinking diet soda, but for me I get thirstier and just get a glass of water right after anyways.0
-
Once in a great while.
I am just not a soda fan regardless if it's diet or not.0 -
I hope coke zero takes over the world!0

Obviously over consumption of anything is bad. Even to much water can kill you0 -

They've been selling 12 can packs of it at my local Publix for a while. A small handful of brands are starting to put out "throwback" versions of their soda with real sugar. Another one I can think of is Mountain Dew. If you're ever in the mood for it, I definitely recommend giving it a try.0 -
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/07/13/there-are-dangers-in-drinking-diet-soda.html
..."And that’s not all—the study also found that the artificial sweeteners in diet soda can interfere with your body’s normal response to sugar, deregulating normal blood sugar levels even more than regular soda.
That’s because the fake sugar essentially tricks your body into thinking you’re taking in the calories associated with the sweet taste. But that means the body doesn’t know how to process real sugar—and fails to release the hormone that controls blood sugar and blood pressure."
I drink Diet Coke on occasion, but try not to drink more than one per day and have been cutting back...
The above article doesn't site some recent research I'd read in a weight loss study, which may be where the Purdue researcher formed her 'opinion' from - I seem to remember it was a UK study.
edit to add:
"Purdue University researchers reviewed a dozen studies published in past five years that examined the relationship between consuming diet soda and health outcomes. They then published an opinion piece on their findings in the journal Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism, saying they were “shocked” by the results."

Yeah - one of the studies they reviewed must have been the one on weight loss I read. One group had diet soda the other water. The water drinkers lost more weight with no change in calories.0
