Every now & then my sister will come to the gym with me. She isn't really over weight, but she is on the thicker side & would probably like to lose 10-15 pounds. Anyway she did the elliptical & then came to do abs with me & she was using one of the weighted ab machines. Anyway, one of the trainers came over & told her she shouldn't be using any weights until she loses weight because it will make her look boxy. I told him all the research I have ever done has told me that you should be doing & weights & cardio together even when trying to lose weight. He says I'm wrong, I think he is a jerk. But that's besides the point. I feel you should be toning your body while losing weight. What are your opinions?
Trainer should have his certification revoked.

If you do weighted exercises your gaining muscle so if you build muscle under fat u may look "blocky". Honestly though it was probably over stated.

What? wow.. My shape wouldn't change so dramatically if not for my strength training. I'm still about 40 lbs away from my lowest weight, but wearing the same size now that I did then..

Tell him to step away or you'll throw a weight at him :-)

sounds like this trainer thinks your threatening his job since youre helping your sister get fit without his "expertise".

Does the gym actually pay this person? Members need to let management know how bad he is.

I don't know if he gets paid by the hour or per session. If it's per session I feel bad for him because he obviously doesn't have many clients to keep him busy & that's why he has time to go around preaching.

Or maybe he thought by hurting my sister's feelings she would want to hire him to train her.

Sounds to me like this trainer doesn't know what he is talking about. I say USE the weights and the hell with him.

What a moron. I was a trainer (um, certified, NASM and lots of continuing ed! :P ) and, for some reason, it seems like the most idiotic ones were the ones who wanted to share their "knowledge" with everyone. As everyone has said, completely disregard his idiocy. That makes me so mad that people like that are going around making trainers look bad.

Ask this fool does he even lift?!?!

    This!!!

I always say, just because a person is certified it doesn't mean they are qualified.

That trainer needs to find another line of work....I have personally seen people at my gym progress over time with amazing results. Not to mention how I feel I have progressed. ..and over time I have tried both.. and to me there is no comparison.

I've been working out for years & know the "drill." But one day I was doing butterfly lifts at a gym & a female trainer actually STOPPED working w/her client to tell me I was in the wrong position & going to mess up my back. Doing it the way SHE wanted DID hurt my back, & I went back to the way I was doing it, to her great irritation. I ran what she said past my physical therapist that I was seeing after an ACL knee surgery, the PT just looked puzzled & said she had no idea what the trainer was talking about. There's always going to be certified "professionals" of all kinds, that are full of bad info & should NOT be practicing. Educate yourself, find good trainers, ignore the rest who try to make themselves feel important by scolding strangers.

What a joke of a trainer! It is suggested you weight lift (and lift HEAVY weights 12-15 reps) twice a week on off days from cardio. Research has found that weight lifting burns more calories over a 24 hour period than cardio alone and helps lean out muscles. I also read that it is good to weight lift first and then do a 1-2 mile jog or some elliptical afterward because the body will have broken down the glycogen in the muscles and used up the carbs so that your body has to use fat to fuel your cardio session afterwards. I've been doing these things and have not become "boxy"- granted I have another 10-15 pounds I am still trying to lose too and have a lot of muscle already, but that is genetics not because of my weightlifting.

Next time, tell him to take a hike!

    Meh.

Weight training can slow weight loss, fat loss is another matter entirely.

If you are new to training you may notice an apparent increase in the visual appearance of your muscles (due to water / glycogen / sacroplasm at the training site.) This may result in a "boxy" look.

Some individuals may find the above off putting which may result in them falling off their plan completely

To be fair the trainer sounds like a muppet though.

My one conversation with a gym trainer was equally daft. I think they have a narrow understanding of your possible goals, because the first thing I was asked was what 'look' I was after, when, if I start lifting, the 'look' I'll be after is however I look when I'm strong and fit... 'Boxy' might be one of the steps on the way there, but it wouldn't be where I ended up.
