What got you motivated to loose weight?

I have been trying to loose weight for years and I just started using myfitnesspal a month ago and now have lost 5 pounds; I am having a hard time finding motivation. What worked for you?

What works for me is no-one calls me the "skinny one" anymore! Until last year I always used to be! Now I have a closet full of size 4 clothes I absolutely cannot wear, but I miss looking good in cute clothes! Skinny had been part of my identity, and now I'm just a chubby blob.

When my knees and feet started giving me constant problems. Went to a foot doctor and he simply said "You're over weight, lose 30lbs and you should feel better"

I saw a photo of myself that made me snap.

Just didn't want to look like that anymore.

Medical reasons, before i was diagnosed hypothyroid i gained about 17kg, i've managed to lose that again but all that loss has been a great motivator to carry on to a more healthier weight.

The premature death of my mom and when I snapped out of my grief I realized I was digging the same early grave and didn't want to do that for myself and my children.

sometimes these things are just typos. why didn't you answer the question instead of teaching her how to spell? Oops I didn't use capitalization.

At first I just wanted to look and feel better. And then my husband had a stroke (at 30) is having major problems with his feet/legs due to diabetes and all in all is very messed up due to all these health problems, one day he was just a big guy and the next day he was near death, our lives changed overnight. I do not want to go though what he is, diabetes is terrifying and it is so easy to end up very very sick from just eating poorly and not taking care of yourself. I think about him and know that losing this weight is so much more then just looking good, it really is life or death, I want to live a long healthy and happy life and in order to do that I need to be healthy and the first step to that is a healthy weight

I'm sure you spell everything perfect. I guess that allows you to throw the first stone. Try being kind and just answering the OP questions.

Originally, and as vain and shallow as it sounds, I started getting curious what I would look like ripped. Even at my fittest in college I had a little bit of fluff around my midsection. That honestly is what kept me going back to the gym for the first couple of months.

After the first few months I started having some better reasons. Setting a good example for my two daughters, I was enjoying how I was feeling (and how I was starting to look), a little extra attention from the wife... And just the fact that I now enjoy it.

That did it for me too. Photos make you see things you didnt want to or didnt notice.

What got me motivated was that I had planned on getting WLS .

So I stopped drinking soda on June 3rd in preparation ,knowing that if I can't stop before the surgery then there was no way I could get the surgery . I had not planned on trying to eat healthy at all ,but that's what happened. I kept thinking to myself Oh My God ! I want to cut my stomach out ! As I served my food I ate better and less than I did before . I started exercising and about a week later an aquaintence of mine turned me on to MFP . I still think about that every once in a while though (That I was going to cut my stomach out because I was so unhappy about my weight) It keeps me grounded.
I like my stomach right where it is.....

  • My motivation is to *finally* stop being "a little extra", which I've been since I was a kid. I also realize I use my weight as a deterrent against people noticing me. Being 31 and still feeling like I'm stuck, has made me want to change my overall health and get rid of the holding back tendencies.

Realizing that I would have to put on more weight to gain muscle. Had to loose some pounds before I put them on.

Also, learning that bodyfat % has more to do with how I look than the exercise that I do. Lower BF% means loosing fat (read: not scrictly necessarily weight).

My motivation comes from me, I make it happen.

Years of being unhappy and unhealthy was enough. I get inspired by many things, especially my peeps here on MFP. But motivation to get up and workout, well that really has to be up to me. I now love seeing progress in my fitness level, that's super motivating.
    Gotta just do it!

    Good luck

My ex-boyfriend told me that I never was motivated to loose weight and that I didn't even try but complained. It was true...so I took that and used it to my advantage. 1 year later he textes me and says how great I am doing with my weight loss and how good I look.

**Yupp buddy, your missing this girl!!**

Funny story................there are many factors that got me motivated to get back into a healthy weight.

First, I had a co-worker that had a heart attack....that scared me, seriously.

Second, girls will make you do some crazy things. Back in November, I got dumped. Now, she is not a bad person and we still talk alot, however, at that time it made me angry, frustrated me, to the point that I was pissed, mainly at my self. I took all that anger and frustration and aimed it at loosing weight. I officially started on December 4, 2013, gathered all the knowledge I had on weight loss and went for it, the rest is history!!!!

I had insomnia for years, and my doctor promised that I would sleep better if I exercised regularly. Once I started doing that, I realized you can't really get a good quality workout after eating burritos and pizza, so I started eating healthier and the pounds started dropping.

That was my motivation to start, but my motivation to KEEP GOING changes frequently...basically daily.

Motivation for me - is a long and slow process. It takes me a few months of firing up the engines before I take off ... Just take small steps in the right direction - and eventually you will pass "go" ... and shred the weight.

I always start with small changes - one each week ... 1) drop liquid calories 2) drop bread/rice/potatoes 3)drop eating out at restaurants (except once a week) ... and then I get my lazy, stubborn *kitten* back to the gym ... because no matter how many changes you make ... none of them will sustain them better than the gym. Nothing will make you feel guilty for eating crap - like the gym.

My motivation was a series of things.
First off I am tired of hiding in a hooded sweatshirt because nothing fits me properly.
I am tired of crying over going clothes shopping.
I am tired of not wanting to go anywhere because nothing fits me.
I am tired of coasting through life on the couch.
I am tired of looking at old photos.
I want to show people I can do this - i deserve to feel good
I am tired of people not taking me seriously because my self confidence is in the tank because of my appearance.
A big thing as well is I eventually would like children - my husband cannot have children (Luekemia when he was 7) so we have a lot of obstacles to jump through. With the option we chose... If i get pregnant I want to be the healthiest I can be for my child.
All of this is motivation for me.

At first it was seeing photo's of me compared to old photo's and it's just sad. NOW I want to get healthy because I suffered a miscarriage (not weight related) and I realized I wanted children in a few years, and Prego bellies look a lot cuter on healthy sized people.
