I had the depo shot 10 years ago after my son was born and I gained 30lbs in 90 days! It was awful!0
-
i went on the depo shot when i was younger as well. I gained 50lbs in 6 months. The shot is evil!!0
-
I had a friend on the depo shot and she gained a lot of weight. I think birth control pills are less weight gain. My doctor said average is around 5 pounds total.0

i have been on the depo for 6 months and i cant take the pill. i have been battling going up and down 5 to 10 lbs. I'm thinking if i didnt try realy hard to llose weight i would gain like crazey. i have also noticed it makes me emotional like im prego.0

ya'll are scaring me...am i doomed to never lose weight due to this shot...i can't take the pills and really haven't looked into much else...i think IUDs & things of that nature are too invasive..don't want to do that.0
-
i think i might get the implant instead of the shot next time0

I took my hubby to get a vasectomy! HA! Best birth control EVER!!!!! LOL0

unfortunately...no husband to snip on..lol...think that i am through having kids...17yr old daughter is more than enough...0

I don't know if you've looked in to it, but I use the Nuvaring... it's not pills, it's a little ring that you insert yourself once a month. There aren't any side effects that I've noticed. I told my doctor I thought I'd gained about 5 pounds from using it, but he said it was proven to not have that side effect, so it was just coincidence. (go figure!) I definitely recommend it, especially since the depo shot sounds like a nightmare!0

I was on the Depo shot a few years ago but gained weight so i went on the nuvo ring its the best birth control out there i think at least. really depends on the person though.0

Check out the IUCs and IUDs...I've had both the mirena and now the re-invented Copper T which has no hormones at all....I had no weight gain with either....the IUC is mirena which does contain a small dose of hormones.....0
-
I went on Depo, but I went in aware of the risk for gaining weight and actually ended up losing thirty pounds.
For the record, the depo itself doesn't make you gain weight. The hormone reaction may cause cravings which causes you to overeat. If you are aware of this problem you can prevent it from happening by having willpower. You are not "doomed" to gain weight with it unless you resign yourself to do so.
I love depo and I definitely don't want to go to back to pills.
Good luck.0 -
i have had the im implanon(its a bar in ur arm) and i didnt gain weight on it.. i gained weight cause i let go of myself.. had emotional times... i love the bar.. nothing that u have to insert or to remember to take... its great and it works very well.. i love it0

i got prego on the nuva ring.. no more nuva ring for me.. lol0

sad to say, but my ob/gyn told me because of my size, it may be hard to reach my cervical cap...that's why i haven't had IUD before...normal pap exam are hell because it is hard to reach my cervix (hope this isn'y too much for MFP)...so i'm kinda stuck with the shot...i do have an active sex life, but don't want any babies..still use condoms for protection from STDs, but I have always had a back up plan for pregnancy0

i had one shot of the depo and one shot only! i gained 10 pounds in two months. i wasnt watching what i was eating though. i think you might want to look into the iud or arm inplant. i honestly felt pregnant on the shot and i was so depressed all the time. i would cry fr no reason and the thought of being touched made me sick to m stomach.i just had a bad experience on it lol0

THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR RESPONSES!!!! I GUESS I DO HAVE A FEW MORE OPTIONS TO LOOK INTO!!!0

I took the patch when several years ago and it was great. You slap a fresh one on your tush once a week and I did not gain weight. and it worked great.0

I have never had the shot, although I did have the Mirena, IUD. Even though the doctors swore that weight gain WAS NOT a side affect of it, I gained close to 20 lbs within 3 months. I have read all over on message boards that a lot of women have gained weight with the Mirena too. I had it removed, lost about 10 lbs since.0

Im going to get the implant in my arm... I can't wait for all this prego emotion from the shot to go away!
FYI i have decided not to go with a copper implant cause i can cause irragular menstral cycle bleeding.0 -
i've heard lots of bad things about the depo shot. never tried that bc, but i did use the bc pill, the patch, and a few months ago had the mirena iud put in. up until getting married, i never used birth control for pregnancy prevention, as i have never been sexually active prior to my marriage with my husband. my bc was strictly to regulate my period, which i completely lost after a few years of undereating.
bc pills made me retain lots of water and made me really emotional; i've really liked having the mirena iud aside from the fact that i have random spotting that can't be predicted. sometimes it's twice a month, which is ... inconvenient to say the least! and i've lost almost 10 lbs over the last month while having the mirena.
i think bc is all soooo individualized and body dependent...0 -
I actually just got off of Nuvaring because I gained 10-14 pounds during the year that I was on it. I've read that other women have better experiences managing their weight on it, but this was not the case for me. Aside from the hunger and weight gain, I think it affected my anger. In fact, in the week that I've been off of it, I feel better and less hungry. Of course, this could be coincidental.
Anyway, I hope you have better luck with birth control than I did.0 -

AH! I have the arm implant, Implanon, and I would NOT recommend it to anyone. I have had two or three periods a month for three years! There was no weight gain caused by the implant, but I did get more facial breakouts then I ever did before! I beg you to do some online research about the effects of the implants. All of the warnings say "may cause irregular bleeding" and they are totally playing it down. I might as well not be on BC because I'm on my period too much to have regular sex!
I just saw this little comment and wanted to warn you!!!0 -

Arm implant does as well!!!0 -
If you have a BMI over 35 or are over 35 and smoke, have migraines or a history of blood clots all the combined oestrogen and progesterone items are not allowed, that includes the patch and Nuva-ring.
The main problem with the injection is that it is a massive dose of progesterone, much more than the implant , mini-pill or Mirena. That's why it's less likely to cause irregular bleeding but puts on more weight. The other problem compared to th eothe ones is once it's in that's it, you just have to wait for it to wear off and that can take a year to be back to a regular cycle.
They've not managed to find a study to prove that birth control makes you put on weight as there are som emany other factors involved, but anecdotally lots of women report it. Still, it's a lot less than you'd gain from being pregnant!
Sounds like Cerazette or Implanon would be a better option, and if after 3-4 months they didn't suit you can stop them or get them removed.

that is so nuts! because my doc told me i might not get a pariod at all, just like the depo0 -
yeah i gained a ton of weight on the depo shot, and the pill does make it hard to lose weight for some people,0
-
I have had the depo shot for two years. My weight has fluxuated from 275 to 315. I do not think i has anything to do with the depo short. I use it as my back up plan as well because pills do not work! My doctor said my blood pressure was too high sometimes to take the pills. The negative I have about the depo shot is my mood. I have had more "crying spells" than I have ever had in my life over the last two years. I call them "crying spells" because they are not from high stress or emotional conflicts but just happen out of the blue for no reason. Despite this negative I am not giving up on depo yet.0

Yeah birth control options are horrible, i'm glad i can't have any more. Have you looked into the birth control ring?0
-
i also got pregnant on the depo shot. So it wasn't for me0
