How often do you record your weight?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm new here and dont seem to find a topic on it anywhere.
I have recorded my original weight when I signed up few days ago. I was meaning to wait a week and then record again.
I am pretty obsessive at the moment and weigh myself every day, so I noticed that I have already dropped a couple of pounds....it does vary from early morning to late night by a couple of pounds each day.
So.....should I wait the 7 days and record it then.....or record it each time I see a different number on a scale...I realize this isnt an exact science...but what is recommended? Also....if you gain a pound or two do you add it...or just wait for it to be lost again?

How do you guys do it??

Welcome!

Yes it's been asked before! It is totally up to you. The general recommendation is that you weigh and record once per week, same day and first thing in the morning. Daily weigh-ins will reflect fluctuations which can be several pounds and this can be frustrating. Good Luck!

I weigh myself daily first thing in the morning but I only record it once a week. Even if I go up, I still record it.

Thank you both for your responses and Tawanda....when you add weight does it also broadcast it in your feed to your friends....lol...that would be horrible....

Once or twice a week here on MFP.

For my own personal record I record it once a month on the same date that I started my whole fitness / weight loss journey.

  • I stick to once a week. Any more than that and it feels like I'm obsessing, which isn't good, either.

When you record a gain, it does not report it to your friends list thankfully lol. Your ticker will change but that is all. That morning to night fluctuation is very normal, though, so try not to obsess. Pick a time of day to weigh if you're going to do it daily, and keep it consistent. For most of us, it's in the morning after waking up. I record once a week on Friday.

I only recorded losses, so when weight fluctuated it'd be a while before I got to record again...LOL
When I got close to my goal I stopped recording my weight.

I usually weigh myself every morning because I find the fluctuations curious (like I'll weigh myself again after my shower to see if I weigh more "soaking wet*"), but I only record losses. I'm sure it's purely vanity and no, I don't think MFP broadcasts gains.

    *I don't.

Once a week, lose or gain, and no, when you gain it does not report that on your wall, thank goodness

As I use a Fitbit Aria scale - and I obsess about the scale (yes - I know - not positive) AND my trainer and nutritionist has asked that I weigh daily at the same time every day - first thing - I weigh daily, and Aria records it in MFP daily.

Not trying to overload folks feed - but since I desire both to be connected to MFP - that is just how it records.

Just joined the site. I weigh myself every morning and have been writing it down. I dont count the through the day etc weight as of course as you eat or drink through the day will change your weight. My opinion any way. Hope this helps ! :-)

I only record it in MFP weekly (first thing in the morning, like others said), and even then, I only record if there was a loss. If I'm curious enough at any other time to weigh myself, I don't record it.

It's a very individual decision! For various reasons, I prefer to weigh daily and I also record weight daily. This allows me to get used to the daily fluctuations and makes it easier to track change over time. Rather than expecting a loss every week, I go to the "reports" section, look at the graph for the past month and see if there's a downward trend.

The disadvantage is that MFP reports every loss. (I think you can set it not to, but then it wouldn't report any loss at all). If you tend to gain and lose a pound or two from day to day you might keep having reports of losing the same pound every couple of days! I'm sure my friends get sick of it!

I weigh every day. I know I should probably weigh once a week but it makes me happy and keeps me motivated to see my weight loss every morning. I lose a few tenths of a pound most days (.4-.8) except the day after Cheat Day, so it gives me something to look forward to.
I log it when I lose. That's all.
    LOL, same here.

I log every Friday morning - no matter what it says, up, down or the same. I weigh myself every couple days or so, but only log Fridays.

I weigh myself every day (with the exception of my TOM, I skip that week) and record the number if it's the same or lower two days in a row. A couple of people on my friends list who are also every-day-weighers recommended this to me when I asked them about it and it helps me not get so stressed about the numbers :) Sometimes I don't log it for a few days because it's much more satisfying logging a whole pound loss rather than a couple ounces at a time

I weigh daily, but only record my losses after about two weeks of being within 2 pounds up or down of the same weight, and I'm losing the last 10-15 very slowly, so I don't record it very often. (And luckily I seem to have worked out the numbers that are good for me, so I don't have any wild fluctuations anymore, even around my TOM.)

I weigh myself every day but only record the downward movements. I undertstand there are fluctuations and some days I go up, but I don't record those. I record any loss even if its only .1lb, it makes me feel good.

It is completely up to you. But, I do recommend no more than once a week. And, if you chose 1 day a week, make sure it is the same day and same time.

I weigh Monday mornings, around 8AM.

I weigh myself daily, but only log a loss when it happens for motivation and support for me.

As for broadcasting, not quite, but instead of it saying * has lost 3.5 since her last weigh in and has lost 9.5 lbs so far, it would just say you lost 3.5 lbs until you are past where it last has you logged at the lowest, so people would know if you gained weight if they were to read into it more.

I also do total body measurements weekly and/or monthly to see where I am at and log that. Neck, arm, shoulders, breasts, ribs, waist, mid, hips, butt, thighs, thigh, knee, calf, ankle because if I am not losing weight, I am probably losing inches
