DBZ got me started, then Fist of the North Star (though it has been YEARS...) and Akira.

    Now/more "recent":

Naruto (manga and anime, though fillers annoy me)
Bleach (Yes, I know the Anime stopped, but I still read the manga)
Hajime no Ippo (manga and NEW anime coming back soon!!!!11!!one! woot!)
Shingeki no Kyojin (Or Attack of the Titan, manga and anime)
    K Project
    Full Metal Alchemist (and Brotherhood)

Sailor Moon was my introduction but ultimately it was Dragonball Z that hooked me in and captured my heart. Of all things. Later on shows like Naruto and Samurai Champloo just solidified my love.

These days I have little patience for anime. I'm not a fan of the romances or the silly, pointless fluff stories. I prefer animes that have definite ongoing storyline (like in the case of Samurai Champloo) and a definitive end (unlike Naruto - but I still love it).

I don't watch much anymore but honestly it's because I haven't been able to find any anime that keeps my interest. If I DO watch it's to watch Sailor Moon or one of the golden oldies. :P I just don't like the new stuff that I've seen. At all.

So... anybody know of a good anime on the lines of Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Naruto, etc? That's worth my time and money?

Just want to clarify that I don't think people who like anime are weird or that it's stupid. I like a lot of things that I know others aren't into- I'm a total fangeek (my ticker should tell you that). But anime doesn't speak to me the way those other things I love do, and I was just curious as to what the appeal is. I could tell you why I love Doctor Who, or Firefly, or Jane Austen, or any of the other strange things I love- they each have qualities that reach out and grab me. I would like to understand what it is about anime in particular that appeals to people. The same way that my college classes on Shakespeare helped me understand what is special about his work, and why it's so amazing- I didn't get it until I could learn to see it through an enthusiast's eyes, and now I love it.

To me, it's just another story telling medium that hasn't really become mainstream in the US. It ranges from adventure fantasy, space sci-fi, westerns, medical dramas, high school drama (think of a drawn version of 90210), horror, etc. I think it's fair to say that for any tv genre you have in the US that's played with real life actors, you will be able to find an equivalent/similar anime series. (except reality... i hope).

If you decide to jump in, I've tried to put some sub-genre titles next to some of the series mentioned on this thread:
Mystery/Thriller: Death Note <--- if you like House, you might like this.
Action with fighting robots: Code Geass
Western/Space: Cowboy Bebop or Trigun <--- if you're a firefly fan, Cowboy Bebop might be something you like.
    Adventure Fantasy: Inuyasha
    Pirate Comedy: One Piece
Horror? Adventure? Action and drama (and lots of gravitas): Fullmetal Alchemist <---- one of my all time favs.
Animal cruelty made cute (chuckle): Pokemon (Let's face it... this is a show made for Michael Vick...)
Zombie Horror: High School of the Dead

If you want to check out some movies, I recommend anything made by the director Miyazaki. That guy is practically a household name in Japan... synonymous with names like Spielberg in the US.

Anyways, I love this thread. I just got some Amazon gift cards and hopefully I can find these titles. Huzzah!!!

Dragonball Z. It was the first thing (not just anime) I ever fangirled over, and that was before I even knew fangirling was a thing. I still love it, too. I watch it on Saturday mornings with breakfast like every good 27 year old grown-*kitten* woman. It will always be my first anime love.

I liked Sailor Moon, but didn't get to watch it as much growing up. I'm remedying that now.

I just finished Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood which BLEW MY MIND. I finished it a week ago, and I had to start re-watching Firefly just to sort of fill the hole it left in my heart when it was over. SO MUCH BETTER than the first FMA anime, it doesn't even compare. And I liked that a lot, too!

I watched the **** out of the first two seasons of Digimon, and the early Pokemon seasons were fun.

Not *technically* anime, but AVATAR. Completely amazing. So is, Legend of Korra. Thank god that starts next week, I can't wait!

I've not seen Samurai Champloo (I'd like to) or Naruto (pass) but Cowboy Bebop is one of my favorites. I always felt like Outlaw Star was in a very similar vein to Bebop.

I got started years ago with AstroBoy, Voltron and Sailor Moon when I was younger. (I think I dated myself with the first two)

Moved on to others as I got older and could get ahold of more (aka: moved away, cable became cheaper, videos became more available, etc). Unfortunatley I work a full time job, garden and do historical reenactment so I have full schedule and don't find as much time as I want to watch anime (hard to sew and read subtitles unfortunately). Below is a list of some I can remember right off the top of my head that I've seen:

    Ranma 1/2
    Record of Lodoss War
    Bubblegum Crisis
    Vampire Hunter D
    Akira
    Ghost in the Shell
    Cowboy Beebop
    Black Butler
    Fullmetal Alchemist

Favorites of all time (so far) are:

    Gundam Wing
    Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
    Escaflowne
    Fatal Fury movies

Hmmm....looking at that fav list, I must have a thing for handsome guys with either long hair or guys with big suits of armor. ;)

If any of you are wanting to find another friend on here, I'm open to accepting requests :) I love hanging out with people with similar tastes.

but those are aimed at kids?
there are plenty of amazing anime shows that are out there now that arent kiddie based
Elfen Lied, Attack on Titan, Claymore and Death Note that have some of the best story lines.

Maybe Fate/Zero, Madoka Magica, Baccano? Not at all similar to your examples in terms of setting, but they fit your "follow a set plot" criteria. Though Baccano jumps from POV to POV, and doesn't follow chronological order a lot...

Oh right! Outlaw Star! I've seen that, just forgot about it.

Another great one was Argento Soma. I know they said it was an Evangelion...? however that's spelled, rip off but I liked it more than NGE.
