Protein :)

Now I may have missed something (highly likely)
But can someone tell me of a food that is high in protein, that is also mid to low in fat and carbs that would make you fat??
I see a lot of people in their diaries (especially the women folk) who have the bulk of their daily calories in Fat and Carbs, and <=20% of their calories from protein.
So then advice is given that "Hey, up your protein....lower your carbs and fat a bit".....
But then someone else will come along and say...."Nah, you don't need that much protein" or "you don't need 1 gr per pound of protein"....
So I am curious, why the fear of too much protein??
I personally cannot think of a good protein source that if I were too eat tons of it.....I would get fat.
So is there a food like that?
Edit::
To make clearer.
I am saying keeping your daily caloric intake the same....but the make up of the calories now shift to High Protein, mid to low Fat and carbs.
Say 80% - 10% - 10%

Don't you know protein will kill your kidneys, and also make woman bulky...
I can eat a lb of steak.. I think I could get fat doing that for dinner... Plus the big trend is high fat diets (for whatever reason) currently.... but people that do that end up eating high fat high carb items.. and protein falls to the side.0 -
It's funny because I have trouble hitting my carb allowance. My trainer keeps telling me to up my carbs, she says that I am the only one of her clients that goes over on her protein, lol.0
-
I've seen so much pseudo science about protein and kidney damage. I've even heard it from "nutrition experts" yet every study I've read has said that there is no downside... especially if you drink enough water. I think this has much to do with it as I've experienced the same responses to my advice.0

I keep hearing that...but damn, both of my parents have had multiple kidney stones....and I know I have one in my right kidney....
But my parents (especially my mother) did not down as much protein as I do.I can eat a lb of steak.. I think I could get fat doing that for dinner... You appear to workout, so do steak and veggies for 4 weeks. Lets see where you come out.
I have my bet on where you would wind up.0 -
Eat anything "too" much and you will get fat. It's calories in vs calories out.
However, if you eat 1000 calorie surplus of protein, you'd get fat much slower than if you were to eat 1000 calorie surplus of carbs or fats. -.- proteins take more calories to digest than carbs and fat.
But I'm guessing the main question here is why so little protein in female diaries. I think it's because a lot of women are afraid to look muscular. Which isn't as easy as they would think it is -_-0 -

Ok, but I didn't say "too" much.
I am asking if you were to re-work your diet....say 2000 calories, and 80%+ of that is protein......will that make you fat? However, if you eat 1000 calorie surplus of protein, you'd get fat much slower than if you were to eat 1000 calorie surplus of carbs or fats. -.- proteins take more calories to digest than carbs and fat.
Again....I am talking within a normal calorie range of diet....so whatever your current calorie intake is......change it so most is coming from protein.....with mid to little in fat and carbs.
Is that a bit clearer for my question?0 -
I don't understand it either . I'm a female , who isn't a big fan of eating meat . But , I drink Whey Tech Pro 24 banana cream protein mixed with skim milk and a teaspoon of peanut butter. I always try to get some protein .0
-
I do skim with my whey also....cannot do it with water.0

@tonynguyen75
I went back and re-read my question....I guess I did open it up to the "too" much option for your reply.
My fault on that.0 -
I'm less worried about what too MUCH protein would do and more worried about what too LITTLE carbs and fats would do. I'm actually pretty sure an 80/10/10 diet wouldn't work with Protein as the main macro, but even if it was feasible, it would screw up digestion, energy levels, blood sugar, and ability to actually use that protein.0

Ok
What would be a breakdown of macros you would like?0 -
@Stage14,
You posted this on another thread:I focus less on grams and more on proportions. I try to make 40% of my calories come from carbs, 35% from fat, and 25% from protein.
To me....I think 25% in protein is way low...compared to the 40 and 35 you are doing for fat and carbs.0 -
I tend to focus on high protein, high fat, and low carb, but I have a very endomorphic body type. When I started eating accordingly, I started seeing more pounds come off. I also noticed that meals satiated me longer. As for protein without fat or carbs, try to find a pure unflavored, unsweetened whey powder, and make a smoothie with some kale/spinach, 2 figs, and some almond butter.0

No worries bro, to answer your question. There shouldn't be any issues with eating a diet that's ratio is high in protein as long as you're getting the essential amount of fats and enough carbs to fuel your workouts.
I find the problem with eating ~80% protein diet is:
1. the taste of my meals. I like carbs, they taste good. Skinless chicken breast? A little bland. :P
2. Satiety. Protein will make you feel much FULLER making it hard for some women to get their daily caloric goals in (too low calories = fear of "Starvation Mode").
3. Thermic effect of protein. Eating 1600 calories of protein in your diet will count on paper, however what's not being counted is the amount of net calories you're actually getting. Makes it hard to determine? This one is a little bit more vague. I think the range is around 20-30% of the calories you eat from protein are actually taken off due to the digestion process.0 -

So I guess my point is right....it would be pretty tough to get fat if your protein macro was the dominant macro say >70%
I know for me, I can eat some meals that are high protein, and low fat, carb.....and within 15 min, I don't feel like I have eaten anything.....
Egg whites are like that for me.0 -

WOMEN CAN"T GET BULKY.... your argument is invalid0 -
Look you may consider the health aspect. Protein in meats carries hormones and anti biotics - and cholestrol. It is bad for you
Protein in shakes - is ok and as pure as steak
Protein in nuts is the best - but in sparing amounts.
Starch is good- rice and potatoes
Vegetables and fruits can be eaten endlessly
Do not eat much else without looking what is in it0 -

Fine...but that is not what I was asking.
I am wanting to know why the fear for women to up their protein.....
Why is it, when advice is given to up protein for a woman......, some will say, nah that is too much protein.0 -

Haha yea you got me, it would be tough for some people that already have troubles filling in their daily calories. But I know guys that can eat 4000 calories worth of pure meat easily. =PI am wanting to know why the fear for women to up their protein.....

However, to your point. 1g/lb of BW is not "too much protein". It's excess, yes. But to me, "too much" implies negative results. =\ will not happen.
But I have GUYS on my friends list that eat less than 40g of protein on some days... T_T0 -
Yeah I can see where protein is pricey......junk food is very cheap....
I have never tried eating 4000 cal in one day....I was happy to break 3,000 the other day.0 -
I actually have to watch my carb intake because of health reasons (and yes I understand all about "good" and "bad" carbs).
I've changed my macros to be 40% protein. My question is on fat. I know fat isn't that bad for you but what should the balance be with carbs and protein?0 -

25% in protein is between 0.8 and 1.2g per kg of my lean body mass. It may have some benefits to raise it to 30% but it is hardly "way too low". Carbs aren't the evil some make them out to be, as long as you pay attention to what you're eating as well as just how much. I'm not saying it's best for everyone, but it is working for me so far. When it stops working, I'll change it up.0 -
I too heard varying stories of kidney damage and especially isolated whey not being good for the body. I'm reading that the organic sprouted brown rice protein is really good for you..and better digestable without the worry.0

Fat shouldn't be a ratio determined by your calories, IMO. You should be aiming for AT LEAST a set amount in grams every day. Unless you're doing contest prep for a bodybuilding show, you'll want to consistently hit a minimum of fats. something around 40-60g at least? 0.4g of fat per lb of bodyweight will give you a good goal that you can go over or under a bit.0 -
since i upped my protein and tried to cut back on my carbs it has helped me TREMENDOUSLY! i left the crazy plateau i was on forever.0

Thanks for the info. So basically make sure I have a minimum and not worry too much if I go over by a bit (based on the .4g/ ratio).
edit: just did the math and that would make my macros 40% protein, 40% fat, and 20% carb.0 -

you need to eat some fat along with your protein for optimal absorption. why do you think natural protein sources are commonly accompanied by fat? protein is great for satiety, yes, but having *some* fat along with your protein greatly increases satiety. i would be starving after nothing but egg whites too! have a yolk or two with them egg whites!!!! or some almonds or something.0 -
I still want to see the meal plan where 70%-80% of your calories come from protein. Particularly at a 1500 to 1700 limit, since this thread is aimed at women and that seems to be a popular goal range for many women here.0
-
I don't understand the OP. How does "you don't need that much protein" translate to "that much protein will make you fat"?
I would find it would be pretty darn hard to eat 80% protein and only 10% fat. What food sources have that much protein and so little fat?
And it also seem like it would be extremely hard to eat enough fruits and vegetables and not exceed 10% carbohydrates.0 -

Assuming a minimum of 0.4g of fat per body weight, the highest amount of protein I could muster on a calculator on a 1600 calorie diet is ~68% protein. That leaves about 2g of carbs. LOL0
