I still dont understand headless or body part avatars

I think headless is because they want to be anonymous but show off their bodies.

I like leg avatars and I understand a flexed arm.

And some of my photos, just the way MFP crops them, show up as just my waist or something silly like that even though they're photos of my whole body.

And then there's my thigh gap photo. :-)

The last forum I was apart of for like seven years...avatars were a big deal. Lots of us were pretty good at PS. Then there were the others who knew how to add filters and mess around with contrast and levels who thought they were good so yeah. It was pretty serious.

I won't even begin to talk about signatures.

To shut up and answer the question at hand. Don't judge a book by it's cover...BUT...have a sweet avatar.

Yes it makes a difference, and without a doubt it makes a difference in the quantity of FR.

    Or afraid of you.

I have learned that often times, they're the same. The other times fear is really just them wanting me in their pants.
  • It doesn't affect how I interact with others, but I will say that when I had a picture of just me, without my husband in it, I got a lot of creepers. And I'm not even that hot!

Preach girl, I'm there with ya. I'm considering changing my avatar to a lil old man to stop the madness:happy: Side note: not to validate the creepers, but you are lovely:)

I'd rather be in your pants.

Depends what thread I'm in and what's going on. For both guys and gals if they are in somewhere encouraging than its all the same how I interact with them. I actually get more motivated when I see others pushing themselves regardless of their fitness level.

If it's in a serious forum and there is excercise/weight loss debate and the persons avatar is not exactly something I'd strive for than yeah, I tend to be a bit doubtful at first without fact checking. Not to say what they are presenting is incorrect by any means but I will probably never take a 400 lb person who lost 59lbs diet advice at face value. Same goes with lifting advice from someone who is at my level of lower.

Like I said, its not that I'm at the point where is just think overweight or low lifting folks advice is bad, I just feel it's a fact of life to war to take those who are more advanced more seriously because it is USUALLY a more efficient use of my time. I know my way of thinking has flaws but its just how I am and I know perception differs from person to person.

For fun forums, yeah, I tend to interact differently with the more attractive and/or awesome I find the person. At the same time I seem to shun the attractive people that I've seen so far up their own *kitten* its unreal. I tend to send out/accept friend invites from those people who we be awesome additions.

I never really thought about it before this question, but now that you mention it I'm consciously psychoanalyzing forum members based on their avatars and the threads they choose to comment in.

Some avatars have a certain.... effect. I imagine it's the effect the poster was going for.

If they are already my friend - it doesnt effect my interaction with them in the least.

For the most part it doesn't. But on a site like this when people are handing out "advice" to others I think it is only natural for someone to want to see what the person handing out advice looks like.
Let's face it, no matter what anyone says their motivation for losing weight is, some part of them wants to do it to look better. So if someone says they did this or that or have lost this much fat or gained that much muscle, you kind of want to see some proof.
Losing weight is one endeavor where blindly following what a stranger on the internet says can lead to a lot of wasted time. Everyone doing this should do a lot of research on their own, but if someone is giving advice and hiding behind a picture of a cat with a stupid expression or an anime cartoon on a site like this it should send up at least one red flag. :drinker:

I work in IT. I am intensely paranoid regarding my online presence. I do not care to have my 'real' picture associated with a user name that can be Google searched even when the profile is private. If you Google my user name you won't immediately see me..though you will see a lot of all of you people - some of you in your underwear (how would you like that picture emailed to your bosses?) :P I changed my user name for the same reason.

If you want to see what I look like you can see pictures IN my profile but I will not make my avatar a real picture of me - ever.

Yes .. there are different types of avatars that evoke certain ugh mmm
emotions. I love the humorous ones, some are motivating, others steamy.
  • I went like a year with a pic from my garden, and I swear no one took what I said seriously, and there were some very, very rude jerks. I decided to put up a pic of my bod because if I'm giving advice, I want people to know it worked for me. I'll fully admit to sometimes putting sexy pics up because I love flirting with beautiful men.

The only way I prof pic would effect how I interact would be if he's got a nice chest or butt. The girls I treat the same.

so you do treat others differently based on their looks that some have as avatars?
