STOP COUNTING CALORIES: EAT CLEAN

Eating "clean" isn't going to cause you to lose weight unless it makes it easier for you to eat at a calorie deficit. Counting calories really isn't that difficult, doesn't take that much time once you figure it out, and allows you to know exactly where you are, so that you don't over or under eat. If it doesn't work for you, that is no one's business but your own, but I do wonder why you are on a site built around a calorie counter. You might as well walk into a WW meeting and tell everyone that you don't like the food. It may be true, but it's not a good way to start a conversation.

i didn't mean to offend calorie counters out there... like i said, i was just curious and wanted to seek advice on times i didn't want to record my calorie intake or simply times when im uncertain of calories in a certain dish like the ones my parents make. i know how to count calories and its very effective. this app makes it so much easier which is why i am using it right now. the thread title may have been misleading.. i don't want any calorie counters out there to stop counting calories calories. i am rather just bringing this topic up. i have read many articles against calorie counting and for clean eating. i'm sorry if i made a bad impression. ofc on a calorie counting app like this i would have thought many were devoted calorie counters, i just wanted to see what people thought or what they would do if they stopped counting calories and just started eating clean. sorry again

I'm not offended personally but can't speak for anyone else. I calorie count most of, but not all of, the time. Being incredibly detailed about over time though has allowed me to adjust my perception of what a portion looks like and what it feels like to be truly hungry (vs. bored) or satisfied (vs. stuffed).

The only thing that I will point out is that it is a factual error to say that one must "eat clean" to lose weight or that "eating clean" is "better" than calorie counting. The irrational fear of "chemicals" displayed by so many in the clean eating movement never fails to amaze me. The body needs certain nutrients and we can feed our bodies in a variety of ways. Many of us have been quite successful at body recomposition by eating diets with a good mix of what many would define "clean" along with plenty of "processed" foods, along with a fair amount of added sugar. If you want to look at the reality, you can't overlook this counterexample to the claims in all of those clean eating books that are marketed to the dieting public.

again i apologize for any misunderstandings that may have arisen. i've been a calorie counter before and i am back to calorie counting again. yep, if i count calories, it stops me from eating out of boredom or over eating as there is a calorie goal you would want to achieve.

ah alright! i'm glad you brought that point up :) honestly i think the fear of 'chemicals' is how clean eating promotes unprocessed food to eat as the body can better break it down? i guess these chemicals are bad, but they can't be that bad otherwise it would not be produced and sold for consumption in the first place. so yeah clean eating has a good philosophy behind it although it doesn't hurt to eat processed food in occasion

Every morning I drink an 8oz glass of water with 1oz of Lemon juice in it within the 10 minutes of waking up.
I NEVER, EVER skip breakfast. In fact, within 1 hour of waking I eat a 3-4 egg white omelet along with 6oz of Chobani Plain Fat-free Greek Yogurt and 1/2 of an orange, every single day..

chobani yogurts were all just recalled. I hope you don't die from eating them after you've worked so hard to lose so much weight and to be so holier-than-thou about telling others how to eat.

do u think i should start eating clean as in eating lean meat, vegetables and fruit on a daily basis rather than relying on counting calories in vegetables because obviously vegetables are good for you since they have a lot more nutrients than you can get out of any junk food. do you think this is a good choice?

No, it is not a good choice, as it is trivially easy to eat too many calories of "clean" food.

Clean is subjective in nearly any context. What is "clean living"? What is "riding dirty"? Depends.

Had to look this one up... I thought it might be a little 'dirtier' than it is.
    Urban Dictionary

    1. Riding dirty

Riding dirty means getting caught by the police with contraband, or in urban slang, gettin caught by da po po, wid some of dat dro dro.
When the sirens went off, all i could do was floor it cuz I was riding dirty like a mother******

I don't count my calories. Some days I'm under the calorie goal, other days I'm over and i still steadily lose weight.

What works for me is Harcombe and it's not a diet but a lifestyle change. I eat healthy, I don't eat overly processed foods, and soda has been eliminated from my diet. With the exception of Ginger ale for when I've an upset stomache or feel like I might get car sick. Ginger ale is amazing for that for me.

Find what works for you and stick with it!

How do you know if you're under or over a calorie goal if you don't count calories?

What does eating clean have to do with counting calories and weight loss? If I eat a 40oz slab of unprocessed beef everyday and follow it with a family sized salad and a triple portion of brown rice i'm going to gain weight even though I'm eating "clean"

Vegetables, fruits, lean meat, unprocessed foods all have calories.

I hate counting calories too and will not go it for the rest of my life. But until I can do it without counting everything gets logged. How else can you really learn about what is proper to eat?

If I make something and it's from scratch I just create a recipe or alter one if I've already got it in there and just switched up a few ingredients.

I eat mostly clean. So i'm not bashing that aspect, but it's naive to think that you can eat without tracking and lose simply because you are eating clean.

eating clean i would say is better for long-term as it is rather difficult to count calories in every occasion such as going to a friend's place, party etc.. counting calories can be a long term thing also if you make it a daily habit to record calories, and of course, it's so very effective but for main purposes, counting calories is more directed to short-medium term weight loss. it's proven and worked for so many people including me so i am not saying it's bad or anything.

yeah definitely, it's hard to control your your diet/exercise without logging. ohwell we'll get used to it over time and for all that i can say, it's well worth the time

I was simply saying how I eat and that people know what they should and should not eat in order to lose weight.

If you want to lose weight don't eat doritos and taco bell and drink soda all day long.
Don't put words in my mouth. Thank you. Have a good day now.

    I never count calories. Ever!
I do NOT log my food here.

I simply eat correctly. Meaning I don't eat garbage, I watch portions, I don't snack, I don't use sugar of ANY kind. Not even the fake crap. I drink water, water, water. And only water. When I think I've had enough water, I drink a few more cups of water.
I exercise 3-5 days a week. I never eat fast food, candy or processed crap.

Every morning I drink an 8oz glass of water with 1oz of Lemon juice in it within the 10 minutes of waking up.

Lunch is usually a large salad with chicken and Fat free Italian dressing. And an apple or something. I'll snack on carrots or other veggies through out the day.

I drink half my body weight in water every day minimum.

    Dinner is similar to lunch.

    This is my daily routine.

I never log it and I've lost 40+ pounds. As long as you eat right, exercise and font snack on crap, drink sugary drinks and exercise, you should be fine. You know what you shouldn't be eating or drinking.

FYI, fat free foods like your FF yogurt and FF salad dressing are very processed. They almost always contain extra chemicals, sodium or artificial something to make up for the fat that is removed...

I actually make my FF Italian dressing homemade so it doesn't have any chemicals. You may be right about the Chobani though... Now I have to investigate darn it! I was told it was the purist out there by my nutritionist.

Thanks for letting me know. I'm going to look into the Chobani.

Eating clean or healthy eating is sure good for keeping you healthy and preventing bad diet related diseases. But to lose weight, you still need a calorie deficit. Burn more calories than you eat. Luckily healthy food such as vegetables and fruit are low in calories compared to junk food like chips and deep fried meals.
Logging calories and keeping a food diary help keep you in track if eating healthy is something you are not used to. Looking at the nutrition value of the food when you log e.g. is it high in fat, high in salt and sugar would help you choose healthier food and maintain calorie count.
In short eating healthy is good for you, logging calories helps. Why not do both? If it is really too much trouble to log calories, maybe a combination of eating healthy and portioning meals would be a good idea?

Depends. If it's the only thing you are taking in, probably. If you are taking in other nutritious foods on top of it why not?

Don't tacos have lettuce, tomato and cheese and meat on them? They sound like food you could eat all day long??? Maybe you'd have to order their taco bowl to get some MORE veggies once in a day? I think I could live on Taco Bell *shrugs* I would probably get really bored.
  • The body doesn't differentiate between a twinkie and a potato. Eating 'clean' is not necessary for the majority of people, only those seeking to maximize athletic potential and get into serious contest preparation need to worry about this, and even then there are exceptions.

If I ate Taco Bell all day and remained within my set limits for fat, protein and carbs, then there would be no issue in losing weight. There may be issues regarding micro nutrients and sodium though.

Interesting. "Stuffing your face" implies overeating, and no one is saying to eat just one type or one food "all day long." Nice red herring.

Call me crazy, but I like to log my food. Wish I had started years ago. If I have a day where it is too complicated and time consuming, I don't log. It's not that often though, I've managed to lose 65 pounds. Rarely hungry, rarely feel deprived.

People should do what works for them. If it's calorie counting/food weighing/logging that keeps you on track, and helps you reach your goal, that's perfect.

Personally I've counted calories in the past and have always found it tedious. Human beings were losing weight for our entire history long before anybody knew what a "calorie" was. You definitely should adopt lifestyle changes that are sustainable for your life, and for me counting calories and weighing food for the rest of my life isn't something I'm remotely interested in.

Not a single of the 100 lbs I've lost came from calorie counting or food weighing. In fact I've never lost any significant weight doing this. The few times in my life where I did commit to calorie counting/weighing actually represented times where I was losing almost nothing. I've found incorporating eating styles, and being intuitive and aware of overall nutrition, that works well for my body, to be the ultimate answer for me. When you know food/nutrition really well, and are HONEST with self, you can find a road that leads toward weight loss victory that does not require calorie counting.

But again, we must all find what works for us.

It's all activity. All. See what diets were in the. . say 17th century colonial America. Know where the phrase "chew the fat" came from? Exactly.

It is not all activity. I lost 50lbs in a year with no activity.
