When I actually pay in cash, yes.

But I rarely pay with cash.

I always use the drive thru line when available to avoid the awkward "do I tip? And how much?"

Wife was a carhop years ago. So yes.
  • People are jerks if the don't tip. Car hops make the same as waitresses hourly. If you don't go through the drive thru, you are supposed to give them at least a dollar, if you only ordered a drink 50 cents. I hate how people think an extra dollar is going to kill them. If people are on such tight budgets, don't go out to eat.
  • I just told my mom today that I bet my Sonic thinks I died because I used to eat there everyday and I haven't been there in over 2 months lol:laugh:

If they expect you to tip, then why is there no tip line on the credit card receipt? I usually pay with credit.

When it comes to tips, if a carhop/server does their job properly, i.e. polite, attentive, customer orientated, then I don't have a problem tipping. If they act like my presence has interrupted their smoke break, then no. If I have something like a penny or $.05 cents coming back in change, and the car-hop/server assumes they can keep it, I'll ask for my change and not tip, but if they give me my nickle or penny back, then I'll tip them. I know it may be seem petty, but it's a quirk of mine.

Yes. Around here, the car hops are all teenagers, some still in high school, some in college. They don't make squat so at minimum I give 2-3 bucks and whatever coin I was due back. For what it's worth, I get excellent service and my order is always correct.

They suck, therefore their opinion is unimportant.

Yes. They earn waitress/waiter salary's (less than half of what minimum wage is). I just round up to the nearest dollar and tell them to keep the change (ex. If the bill is $7.63, I give them $8.00).
