ALL TEH THANKSGIVING FOODZ

Options
Brace yourselves...Thanksgiving is upon us. :drinker: I'm trying to make a list for all the food I need to get at the grocery store for this day of eating festivus, and I feel like I'm forgetting some of the traditional (or even not so traditional) Thanksgiving foods/snacks/sides/desserts.

So tell me, what are your favorite foods/snacks/sides/desserts on Thanksgiving?

(Also..."healthy" recipes need not apply. I plan on eating lots of all sorts of delish food...and have zero interest in finding ways to reduce fat/carbs/sugars, you name it. I want the good stuff. I don't plan on logging any of it; I plan to thoroughly enjoy it and not worry one iota about it.)

In for fappery over food lists.

I know we're adding "canned" cranberry jelly, corn, and pickled beets to our dinner this year for my husband (since his family does that, we switch every year, and he might as well get what he wants EVERY year somehow).

    Standards we do
    Turkey
    Ham
    Mashed Potatoes
    Stuffing
    Gravy
    Homemade Cranberry Sauce
    Sweet Potato/Marshmallow Casserole
    Rutabagas (gross)
    Salad
    Rolls
We used to do pasta, but we've dropped it as more of the FOB Italians have passed on
(I feel like I'm forgetting things now, too...)

    Pecan pie
    Pumpkin pie
    Misc. random other dessert

All the appetizers ever (melted brie pastry, jalapeno/sausage stuffed rolls, crudites, etc.).

My mom makes the most amazing stuffing in the world... It's all I need. I'd be fine eating just stuffing and green bean casserole.

I saw a recipe on TV the other night using the Pilsbury crescent rolls. You roll them out flat, throw in some cheese and bacon, then roll it all back up and slice them into little rolls, bake like normal and enjoy. I don't see what could go wrong with this. YUM

    At Mom's House:

Roasted turkey with Bell's stuffing both in the bird and cooked on the side
    Mashed potatoes
    Buttercup squash (boiled and mashed)
    Homemade gravy
    Coleslaw or green beans
    Cranberry jelly
    Pumpkin pie
    Custard pie

Leftovers - turkey sandwiches with reheated sides, plus she makes a nice turkey soup out of the carcass (sp?)

    At my house:

Roasted chicken (there's only two of us, a turkey is too much)
Stove top stuffing (in the bird)
    Butternut squash (boiled)
    Heinz gravy
    Creamed potatoes

I don't make dessert because Hubs isn't much of a sweet eater so I'll end up eating most of it. If we have any, it's from friends who drop in and bring goodies with them.

Leftovers - I made a thanksgiving casserole with stuffing, turkey, gravy, creeam of mushroom, mushrooms, onions, topped with green beans and french fried onions. YUM!

    - Turkey w/ homemade bread stuffing in main cavity and Scottish sausage stuffing in the small cavity (my wife's mum usually does the sausage stuffing since she's Scottish)

    - Pan gravy

    - Roasted fingerling potatoes or mashed potatoes

    - Sauerruben (Saured rutabaga or turnips...like saurkraut kind of...my German grandmother's tradition...I like it but most in my family doesn't...I always do it though 'cuz it's like having grandma at the table with us...I make it just like my grandma did...I shred and ferment the roots in salt for a couple weeks out on the kitchen counter...that's it...it makes it's own brine and soaks in that deliciousness...cap it an throw in in the fridge when it's to your liking...I like it nice and ripe)

    - Homemade green bean casserole (I use a bechamel sauce and chanterelle mushrooms in lieu of condensed cream of mushroom soup and I make my own crispy onions)

    - Chipotle sweet potatoes...my mom started doing these about 15 years ago in lieu of the more traditional candied yams...these are way better and the tradition has remained.

    - Homemade cranberry sauce (my wife's mum usually makes this)

    - Roasted butternut squash...roasted and then mashed with butter

    - Pumpkin pie and apple pie

    - lots of wine and beer

Last year, we started a new tradition of having smoked brisket in lieu of turkey. It is delicious. I usually get up at about 6am to start the smoker, and it cooks for 10 or so hours.

I usually make a homemade blackberry-cranberry sauce to go with it and a few loaves of fresh bread. Sweet potato casserole is normally on the menu too.

    Pics for da_bears1008:

^ This was the smoked brisket from last Thanksgiving.

This was the table spread with homemade bread, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, brisket with sauce, and some kind of rice.

My husband wants me to make another batch of smoked candied bacon this year too, so I'll probably do that.

I don't give a rat's *kitten* about eating healthy on Thanksgiving. I will, however, work out that morning. I'm cooking again this year, and this is the menu:

    Shrimp and cocktail sauce.
    Meatballs.
    Celery and cream cheese.
    Biscuits.
    Salad.
    Corn.
    Sweet potatoes with marshmallows.
    Broccoli casserole.
    Turkey and sausage stuffing.
    Cranberry chutney.
    Mashed potatoes.
Pumpkin squares (since I don't like pumpkin pie)
    Black Forest trifle

What do you put in your broccoli casserole? And good call on the pumpkin squares! I'm not a big fan of pumpkin pie either (don't get me wrong, I'll still eat it, but it wouldn't be my first choice among desserts).
