40. Wow. My daughter is 41 my son is 45. I am 70. I remember my 40s . They were good years but actually i look better and most dsys feel better than 40. I have time for me and do more things for me since my kids are grown. 40. I am almost twice that. You young people keep up the mfp logging and exercise. You are on a great plan.

It's really a bit of a myth that its' harder when you get older. The reason it's normally harder is due to years of inactivity. Your metabolism does slow down but in reality not a significant amount (around 100 calories every 10 years) . I'm 45 and have had no problems losing or exercising. Feel free to add me if you wish
Studies are proving exercise is nothing to do with weightloss, that the majority of weight problems in older people is hormonal., meaning, ghrelin etc, these hormones are being affected by the foods we eat and food manufacturers exploit this as they know certain additives will create cravings, the body then does not turn off the hunger signal, the body works overtime and has only one option, to store it as fat for use later.
Unfortunately the body is designed for fat storage for famine, not weight loss, so in order to maintain weightloss needs plenty of swapping and changing things to prevent the body from slowing the metabolism to equal the food intake.
Also it is being found out that the age at which women give birth also has an impact on weight, but if we worried about all this we would lose our battle, so maybe a little read of the BMJ with a black coffee, before hitting the gym is the key, motivation is the main key to winning the battle.
Just remember, the medical profession know more about obesity, the hormones related to it now than they did 20 years ago and each day they are learning more.
there's so much I could say what I think about this, but I'll just say I disagree with it all, strongly.
I'm 54 & have lost 3 stone, or 42lb, or 20kg since starting on here on Jan 4th.
all done nice & steady with a sensible caloric deficit, generally eating cleaner & doing a bit of exercise. It ain't complicated.0 -
Oh and i forgot to mention that anyone can feel free to add me. I'm aiming to log everyday (I haven't been) and to stick as much as i can to my calorie allowance. I have upped it from the recommended limit as 1,200 didn't seem to be enough to feed a sparrow!0

I'm 44. I now feel awful sluggish and heavy and Xmas pigging out only fuelled all that...... but thats all gonna change!! This year I aim to be lighter, free-er, happier, healthier, more positive and ACHIEVE!!! Now thats a mission statement!0

After turning 42, I finally had enough of being overweight. I have been going to the gym 5 times a week since September and lost steadily throughout. I have been cooking meals from scratch, reduced carbs but still enjoy the odd treat and tipple. My husband has reached his goal weight and is hooked on running. I have still a way to go but aiming to look and feel fab this summer!0

I am almost there too!!37! Already been through menopause early in life! Once you hit this age your body starts to play with you! Menopause causes a loss of estrogen and because estrogen is also made by our fat cells, our bodies produce more fat cells to help balance of the loss of estrogen. In addition, progesterone levels also slow and can contribute to bloating and water weight gain. This doesn't mean we are all doomed but you have to listen to how your body reacts to foods a little more then in our 20's!
I know I weigh due to my calorie intake, so this app helps so much! Make sure you measure the food! I have eyeballed what I thought was 1/2 cup and was actually 1 cup and it all adds up! You can do it! I have had enough and am ready to focus on loosing now. It can be done I am in!!0 -

I'm 44 and i sure as hell don't feel my age. Even though i could be in better shape, I have more knowledge about health and fitness than i did in my 20's and 30's, and overall I feel better.0

Just turned 46 and loving it! Picked up skiing, backpacking and kayaking after my 40th. The struggle continues but life just keeps getting better.0

I am 46 and feeling fit and great now. After a lifetime of exercise and fitness I gained weight after 2 knee surgeries, but back to fitness now. You are right your body does change a bit as you get older, but you can totally still be gorgeous in your 40's! Happy to join you for a bit of moral support if you would like to add me. x0

I'm 42 years old and have been here for a little over a year. Staying active is a bit more challenging as I get older due to increasing aches and pains, but it's worth it. Feel free to add me if desired.0

I'm 41 and today forced myself to take photos of how I REALLY look (not how I hope I look when I glance through squinted eyes in a narrow mirror). My body and my back aches, I can't fit into my clothes and I've been feeling terrible. But not any more, it changes today!

Inspiration and motivation incoming!
Summer 2012 I got an epiphany that I was a fatass. The elevator was out at work and I was breathing like a beached pilot whale from climbing three flights of stairs. I remember thinking, "Is THIS what you've become? Is THIS the best you can be?"
I took a long hard, and truthful look at myself. At the advanced age of forty five I'd ballooned up from my physical work weight of one hundred fifty-five pounds to two hundred thirty pounds. My BMI was 34.5, and I was a mere fifteen pounds from being classified as 'morbidly obese'. I was tired all of the time. I didn't really do anything that involved being physical. I'd stopped working in the wood shop I have. Yard work requiring more than me pushing a self-propelled mower didn't get done.
Dropped 73 lbs in 18 months.
Starting lifting, made gains.
Humped 1/4 of my new bodyweight in a pack 30-40 miles a week.
On December 4th I fainted at work. On December 9th I had a 16cc benign tumor removed from my heart.
Getting fit made the tumor detectable by sonogram in the ER - it blocked 95% of the atrium.
Getting fit is making my recovery worlds faster - I'm home and running up stairs and turning slow miles on the treadmill.
Getting fit saved my life.
WOW - that really was inspiring! I am sure I'm giving myself all kinds of physical problems because of my weight. For all the ones I know about (hip, foot, snoring, back…) there are probably more going on inside.

38 and really want to lose weight and get energy up. Could really use support as we'll like the idea of the calorie burn tracker arm band (not sure what of the proper name of them). I'll be researching those soon.0

I am 45. I started out by cutting out alcohol, then incorporating a little bit of exercise, then eating healthier, then adding more exercise then eating a lot healthier. 8 sizes later..........
I did not do it over night, I did not do it in a year, but I did it because I did not give up or starve myself. You can do this and you do not have to be perfect at it, all you have to do is a little better than you did the day before.0 -
I am not new to MFP but have not been on in ages. I turned 40 this last year and feel worse than I have ever felt (and weigh more than I ever have) so I'm back on the bandwagon. I noticed as I neared 40, my body changed a lot and has stopped responding to exercising...it's true...it does get harder at 40!
So I'm looking for others who are in their late 30's or in their 40's to help encourage each other to keep on this!
Waves with both hands: ME! 45 I am, turning 46 in may, physically that is, still young in mind. And no I don't notice my body stopped responding on exercising, but I did notice dieting doesn't go so easy anymore...0 -
As people age (women especially) the metabolism slows down, and muscle is lost. If people continue to eat the same calorie amount as they did in their 30s, they will gain weight. I have numerous friends who did not make changes when they hit their 40s and gained quite a bit of weight. I've been tracking for a long time and exercising regularly, so when I hit 40, I didn't have to worry about it. Since MFP adjusts for age, I know I'm staying under the recommended calories for my age and activity level. Strength training will keep you from losing muscle and thus metabolism, so if you're not doing some light weights, it's a good idea to start. It seems unfair that at 40 we can't eat the way we did at 20!
I'm 41, with IBD with mutliple food intolerances, so I have to track to make sure I eat enough calories to maintain my weight. Otherwise I get too thin. I think it's just as painful to told you're too thin and have things said like "maybe you should go eat a cheeseburger!" as it is to have comments thrown at you when you are overweight.
I could have wrote this, except I am a skinny-fat 48 yr. old guy.0
