How many times have you "gone out" when the air temp is -20 and Windchill in the -50's or -60's?
I don't even leave the house when it's that cold out!!0 -
I love the gym.... I used to go to lifetime fitness and it was the bomb... so worth the money. Not only tons of equipment but a nice locker room with towels, an indoor and outdoor pool, a daycare... I went there like every day during the summer. If I wasn't working out I was going to lay out by the pool! However, I moved. And now the only gyms close to me are not even half as cool. But it gets the job done. Just no pool. Or towels.
Besides, I can't lift weights in the great outdoors. Well I guess I could, but I'd have to go buy all the equipment and then set it up outside, which is just stupid.
could you imagine doing all your lifts outside in the summer? Has the potential to be AWESOME- for maybe 2 months- then just way to hot and humid and sticky!!!
LOL
I think it would be awesome to lift outside- but well- we can't do it all all the time!0 -

Kudos...That is a hell of a lot of "bundling up" with ZERO exposed skin, eyes, etc...
How many runs have you gone on at -60 wind-chill?0 -

I've been on my motorcycle in single digits without externally heated gear.
Sweet jesus.
those negative wind chills are no joke0 -
I'd rather exercise outside than be in a gym too! But strength training requires a gym, and when it's -20 here, I don't have much choice but to run on a treadmill (as boring as it is)... hoping it "warms up" soon!0

I got a brain freeze gassing up the truck Monday morning. Might have been the coldest I've ever been.0 -
haha, I'm right there with you! I love parks as well for walking and running. There's a lot of equipment you can take with you as well...yoga mat, weights, resistance bands, etc. I've even seen people with swords out there. I'd be interested in trying that workout!0

I do tend to run hot though and like it cold for running. 40-50 is perfect t-shirt and shorts running weather. And I REALLY hate the treadmill.0 -

20's are shorts and t shirt running weather.
It's always fun when those who don't live in said climate tell you what you should do in said climate.
Snowboarding/Skiing and running in the extreme cold are comparing grapefruits to golf balls. I've done -30 wind-chill while skiing. Anything lower than that the place closed.0 -
If I lived in SoCal by the beach and a national park I'd probably exercise outside a lot more too. But when you live in Michigan and it's -5 and there's a foot of snow outside you don't have much choice. Well I guess you have a choice but I choose to work out at home or at the gym than freeze my balls off.0

Please don't think I am marginlizing how extreme the weather is or putting anyone down who is going to the gym instead. It is extreme, and I did not intend for it to come across that way. The weather has frankly ****ing sucked for many of you out there.
I'd rather run outside if at all possible than do treadmill work. That is all I meant by my initial comment. Like I said, I haven't had to run in those temperature personally. I do have friends who are running bundled up in these cold temperatures.
Why you say snowboarding/skiing is so different from running? I would think it's better running since you are constantly moving. I am honestly curious.0 -

yes it does- I lived in Lancaster till i was 18. I chipped many many layers of ice from water buckets for horses.
it's not north east winters or russian winters- but it sure as *kitten* get's cold there0 -
This is no different than asking why people would work inside an office building instead of outside on the beach.
Because that's where they need to handle their business
I wish there was a "Like" tab
Me too.0 -
I never said anything about what one SHOULD do

When you ski, you could be what 5min from inside if you get cold, when you run you could be 30-40min away which could be the difference between lift or death at that temperature. IMHO it's also easier to put heavier layers on without worrying about sweating and freezing on the slopes. Not sure about you, but I don't run in my boots with 3 pairs of socks on...
My point still being, it's easy to tell someone to head out in that type of condition without experiencing it yourself.0 -
I walk outside for my exercise. It's hard in the winter considering the cold weather, snow storms, and wintry mixes we get here in New York State.
I have a few different routes I take depending on the weather outside. They range from 15 minutes to 70 minutes. I prefer to walk outside than go to the gym.
I go to the gym when it's too cold out, or the weather is really bad like heavy rains or snow or ice. I can't walk outside after a snowstorm or heavy rain or ice.0 -
I enjoy walking outside even with the various types of weather!
The main reason is I used to work for a regional airline for 16 years. During that time, I've worked outside under every type of condition from heat index and concrete heat of 130F (also combine that with an engine blast!) to freezing rain to snow.
I learn how to dress warmly, yet not overdress getting too hot.
Also, learn how to focus on the task at hand and place that feeling of cold aside.
When I first start walking in September, the walking trails were packed! As the weather changed, fewer people. The past two months, half the time I was the only one walking on the trail (but it's right next to a grade school and half the classes face the trail so no issue being out there alone).
This past Sunday it was warm and another walker stop me to state she admire me,because she past by, would see me out walking on cold windy days, drizzle, light snowing and signal temps.
I also kept a few items from my ramp days. An all weather vest and three handknit caps of Alpaca wool (I picked up in Ecuador and Peru) and very warm.
As for the gym, the one time that I join, it was not a good experience and felt unwelcome. I would never say that later down the road I will change my mind. But for now, working outside is the only way for me0 -
I like gyms, but because my thyroid disease is autoimmune, I tend to catch whatever is going around, and work and the store and wherever else I have to go is enough, so I have a treadmill, exercise bicycle, bunch of other stuff at home to use.0

Because I can't find a rack and heavy weights in the outdoors. I could try bench pressing small children roaming around outside but their parents may not like it.0

Skiing vs running.
Another thing to consider is not just the temperature but snow and ice. You may be able to do both at the same temperature (-5 for example) but I would not be running in the snow and ice. Also it is a different type of activity and clothing requirements.
After the first time I went skiing this year I ended up being so sore in my upper body and abs. My legs were fine though.
I like to do both, outdoor activities, but I also love spending a few hours at the gym weight training.0
