Shocked at the amount of calories

Outback Steakhouse: Salad, 1 glass of wine, a 10oz steak and broccoli (not even any bread with dinner!) = over 1,000 calories. Whaaat?0

I was shocked when I learned years ago that a blooming onion from Outback Steakhouse has 2000 calories in it, 160 grams of fat and over 4000 milligrams of sodium. And that doesn't count the dipping sauces they bring with it. I know it's meant to be shared, but it's an onion!
I used to work at Outback, and people would always ask me if I ate the Bloomin' Onion all of the time on account of my employee discount. Of course I always replied with, "Yes! I eat it constantly! It is the best!" It is the easiest thing to sell on the menu. But really, I would be thinking to myself, "Are you crazy? I hardly ever eat that thing. It has a zillion calories!" People think that because it's an onion, it must be healthy.0 -
What did me in? The cheesecake! At 600 calories per tiny, delicious slice.
Yup. That is what the people who say, "eat what you want, just in moderation" don't get.
Even if you have the willpower to only eat a tiny slice of cheesecake at a sitting, it is still an enormous amount of of your daily allotment of calories and you will be hungry again in no time and need to eat again, easily going over your allotment for the day.
Some foods there is just no practical way to eat in moderation. Unless you are one of those people who eats a spoonful of some treat and is satisfied.
This x10000000. "I eat ice cream every day!!!" Cool story bro. 1/4 of a cup is a silly amount to brag about.
I'll eat about a cup of ice cream in total for the day. But while I love my sweets, I guess I'm fine with smaller portions of real meal time foods haha. So, it's true, most people do find a balance- if you honor your true cravings instead of eating out of habit or to get a brain buzz. I guess being content with a small portion of anything is just hard for someone with binging or reactive eating problems to comprehend?0 -
Wraps - as everyone else already mentioned - were a huge shocker for me!
Raisins! I made a homemade trail mix once and was horrified when I added the recipe up and found it was hundreds of calories per 1/2 cup!0 -
I was shocked that some restaurants have salads that have more calories than their steaks. I also can't beleive that some muffins have to calories that they have. I used to love pumpkin muffins until I found out that they are 500 calories a piece. Just not worth it. Same with pasta and rice. A little, almost microscopic, bit is not worth it.0
-
With the exception of French Onion Soup, I would say everything on the TGI Friday's menu. I ended up with just soup for dinner because I couldn't justify the calories for how the food tastes. Just not worth it.0
-
But is one small whole meal wrap not better calorie wise then 2 slices of white bread?
Bagels were a shock for me at how many cals were in them.0 -
Yeah, raisins got me too!0

Pork shoulder shocks me every time. It's incredibly calorie dense, so I tend to stay away from it. When I do end up eating it, though, it's like a constant re-learning process. "Oh! So THAT'S why I don't eat pork shoulder anymore."0

I just hate some of the products we but which are "healthy" have sooo much sugar... Like Milk...
Yes, milk was quite a surprise to me. Especially since unsweetened almond milk has only 30 cals and almost twice the calcium
Now I must immediately try almond milk...0 -
Almost anything except the unsweetened tea from Starbucks!
Tropical Smoothie bills itself as "healthy" but the sandwiches are full of fat and the smoothies are nothing but sugar! Even the smoothies made with Splenda have a ridiculous amount of calories and carbs!0 -
curious as to your recipe. I've been making a lot of it with shots of amaretto and chambord. almond milk, cocoa powder
and isn't it amazing.... once we start counting
How did I never consider putting Chambord in hot chocolate before this??0 -

I never like cow's milk, even as a child, even with flavoring added but I looooooove unsweetened almond milk even without flavoring!0 -
I always feel like a terrible person on these forums, I absolutely love cow milk and use it everyday. :laugh:0

You'll find after you're here awhile and have lost weight that you're able to eat your treats without agonizing and fit them into your macros. I was so anxious at first and cut alot of stuff out. Now I'm relaxed, fit it in and enjoy--every once and a while.
This is what that looked like for me:

Yeah, I get coffee and add a little milk. Add coffee and tea to my list of things that the food industry has turned into candy. Once DS and I shared some new drink from Starbucks because I had a coupon to get it for free. It was white chocolate-flavored, very creamy, and I suppose there was a little coffee in there someplace. It was so sweet and heavy we couldn't finish it.0 -
One single, solitary, hot cross bun from Sainsbury's is over 200 calories (my husband buys them in - if it were up to me we'd be sticking to seasonality and only buying for Good Friday). They don't really fill you up much either (I'd been having one occasionally for a "quick grab" breakfast on school mornings when I'm in a rush to get the children ready to catch the bus). When I was last trying to lose weight on here I was surprised at how calorific chorizo was compared to other meats.0

Try a little hit of the ol whisky too.0 -
Lobster and caviar shocked me, both in a good way.... You can literally eat pounds of both forever.
My 30th birthday my now wife and I took a friend of ours up to Portland, ME and had lobster on the docks.
10 pounds of lobster, one of them weighed 6 pounds. $50 total. Lordy lordy.0 -

Now there's a smart woman.0 -
It isn't so much the calories of individual things that shocks me so much these days. It is the fact that I can still eat 10000+ calories in a matter or hours easily when given unlimited access to candy and cookies and brownies and such.0

One cup of watermelon is only 46 calories!0

Another big shocker for me, Rosemary. Such a fantastically robust spice: 3g (1 tsp) = 11 calories. Pardon? You can't even get Rosemary on a tsp! :laugh:0

Used to be a big fan, but then I tried to use it in a latte one day and learned you do NOT want to froth almond milk... Ew. Haven't had it since.0 -

Silk makes a delicious dark chocolate almond milk. Now, that gets back to the sugar issue, but at least it's chocolate. It's only 100 cal per cup so it's not that bad.0 -
Jack in the Box Munchie Meal - 1560 calories! Holy crap! I can't believe they market this as a late night "snack" for 1 person! CALORIES NOT INCLUDING THE DRINK!!
Hahaha can't stand fast food places that try to market things as "snacks", like Arby's does it, too, but calorie wise you just KNOW everything will 600+, and to me that's a small meal!
600 calories is a big meal for me, lol!0 -
Was shocked by the number of calories in a choco chip muffin..a good 400 calories..gosh..and thinking about it, I used to have it regularly before starting my weight loss journey0

Hmmm...not sure where this is coming from. A tsp of Fresh Rosemary has about 1 calorie.0 -
Wraps..... just the thin flat bread bit rather than the finished filled item. How can something so flat count for so much?!
THIS.
I've pretty much given up bread and needed another way to transport lovely sandwich fillings, but when I saw how 'expensive' the wholemeal ones are I was like NOPE. Salads forever it will seem0
