    I am a supporter of the "high carb" lifestyle.
    Sure we humans are adaptable to just about anything. But going all low carb is basically cutting calories. Going low carb is putting you closer to ketosis, which is bad. Eating way too much protein (especially meat) actually triggers cancer cells. "But but I dont have cancer and I eat loads of meat" Ok and so did the other guy say about smoking cigarettes and has a case of black lung that could have a few cancerous cells starting out.
    I caught on the post about low fat packaged foods. Yea it's all processed junk. Who needs processed junk? It tastes like sheeeeeet. Want something sweet? Eat an orange or a banana. It's not gonna kill you. The fruit sugar is not going to kill you, but the sugar in that low fat processed junk might screw your body up a bit.

Where is the study that shows the long term effects of these diets? What about the results after someone stops this way of eating? How much weight might be gained at that point?

    Where are the studies that show the results after someone stops Mediterranean/low-fat/veg*n/WW diets? Oh wait, there aren't any, because they're supposed to be lifestyle changes. A ketogenic or low-carb diet is designed to be, at the very least, a long term one to help correct health issues, and for many people, it is a permanent lifestyle change. It boggles my mind that low carb diets are pretty much the only ones criticized for what happens after someone stops following it.

    That said, to provide some counter research to the OP, I'll just leave this here - http://eatingacademy.com/ It goes into great detail about ketosis, the ketogenic diet, and what it's like to live on it long-term (he's been on it for nearly 3 years now), including DEXA scans and notes on athletic performance. The main takeaways? No, it's not catabolic over the long term. No, it's not dangerous over the long term. No, it doesn't really affect performance after you're adapted (even on 600 mile bike rides). No, it's not for everyone, but it's not some "niche" thing that only a relative handful can pull off, either.

    No idea what's bad about ketosis, I like having a secondary supply of energy to my brain so I don't suffer from low blood sugar and "lack of energy" whatever that is.

The study found that casein would potentially feed tumors that already existed in rats. Casein is milk protein, a specific protein that is known to be uniquely hard for many humans to process. This does not, by any stretch of the imagination, cross over to people who don't have tumors or to any other proteins.

    Also, the studies in that "documentary" make no differentiation between an Oscar Meyer hot dog and a grass-fed steak. Hint - there's a world of difference between a meat product that's basically the end-of-the-line scraps from factory farmed animals that have since gone through a questionably-sanitary industrial meat processing plant and pumped full of questionably-safe non-organic/man-made chemicals, and cuts of meat from an animal that was raised in humane conditions, eating the food it was meant to eat, and butchered and packed at a local butcher shop.

    Ketosis is not dangerous. Ketoacidosis is dangerous. Thankfully, Ketoacidosis can only happen if the body cannot produce insulin (ie - Type 1 Diabetes). Ketosis is regulated by insulin.

    Fructose is one of the primary factors in non-aloholic fatty liver disease, and that part doesn't matter whether you're eating it from fruit or sucrose. So there is that.

    Ketogenic diets came around as a treatment to seizure, in the early 1900s. Try again.

    And I have educated myself with nutrition. I was also a D1 runner in college and a nutritionist for a coach in high school, if I didn't have this knowledge I would've competed like crap.

    1. No, not necessarily. May be higher but not out of the moderate range.
    2. I don't consider bread junk food. I don't consider an orange junk food. I cut back on my calories by not eating those foods or not in the quantity I normally would. I understand how low carb works to suppress your appetite, thus calorie deficit.
    3. How is fruit sugar metabolized differently? My body would get really messed up on a fruit filled donut.
    4. I'm curious as what you consider a "whole food"? Is spinach a whole food? There's no way spinach tastes better than Doritos. Or is it only organic spinach?

    1 and 2) "Usually" means just exactly nothing. It's really best to speak in specific terms about a situation, hypothetical or otherwise. I have no interest in what people "might" do or what they're "likely" to do. I'd venture to say that anyone pushing on a stance about behavior is probably selling something.

    3) Good luck proving that sufficiently. Fractionated sugars and metabolic shunting are interesting concepts. I'm looking forward the research that will come of it, but your claim is currently not supported.

    4) Nope. I eat a mix of whole foods and "crap." There are items in each category that detest and some of both that I love. Okra? Hideously bad. Awful. There is nothing you can do to that to make it good, including deep frying and dipping it chocolate. On the flip side, I'll take an apple over Swedish fish any day; they're just weird.

    I could take a few course by mail and call myself a nutritionist. I suspect an actual RD would be somewhat more likely to go by an 80/20 rule as far as whole, nutrient dense foods go.

    yarwell, I suspect littlekitty3 is confused about what ketosis is and in fact like most people who have been misled by the high carb mantra actually thinks it means ketoacidosis, which is very dangerous... but not much to do with ketosis.

    I just love a diet that lets me eat stuff I enjoy (oh Camembert, how I love thee) and still lose weight without much exercise and I continue to astound the doctor with the blood work results which are bang on perfect.

    I feel great! I'm off now for a nice 16km bushwalk/rock climbing with friends and I'm not going to forget to take my cheese and Biltong!

    Can you tell me why there are requirements by the body to have fat and protein but we can live well with absolutely no carbs? I suggest you get informed. As for needing carbs for exercise, that has been proven to be false. The body converts fat and protein to glucose just fine. Think of eskimos - protein and fat and no carbs and they are healthy. We eat a lot of carbs and this nation is getting fatter and fatter.

    Total agreement...although huge difference between low carb and no-carb. Lots and lots of science backing cardio efficiency with lower carb diets--that is unless you are a endurance Olympic athlete. That changes things a bit...

  • Young adults are already in a category that lose weight a lot faster than say someone who is 45.
    I am 40 and found P90X and Insanity worked well..very well. Bill Phillips Body for Life worked very well years ago.
    And I wanted something that was easier on my body, didn't take as much time, and I didn't have to think about what my next meal was going to be.
    I researched and found two that my full criteria. I know there are more out there...
