TOM - Women only please

Is it just me, or you do all crave specific things during TOM? I mean ... mine is due any day now and I have been craving chocolate, cheese cake, gummy worms .... everything sweet and unhealthy. I've also been going over on my calories for the day. I've been trying my best not to eat these things but I have been caving in and trying to workout really hard afterwards .....sigh

  • YES! I crave all the above, I always go over my cals, but I'm better every other week. I don't beat myself up about it, as long as it's not every single day :-)

    I do have strong cravings during TOM. Knowing that I don't really want those foods and that the cravings are caused by TOM helps me to resist the foods that are calling my name.

  • Yes, I do to! Chocolate, but more carbs too, anything salty and bready, like crackers and pretzels... and I can't stop with a serving or even 2 or 3, I want the whole bag!! LOL!!! Still working on a solution, so far just induldging some and tyring to get into the moderation habit!!!

    I normally crave chocolate (LOTS of it) and something salty like a warm pretzel or cheese dip. My TOM started on Sunday and I've managed to actually lose weight (normally I gain...up to 10 lbs!) by drinking plenty of water.

    I mentioned this on my status update, too, but I've found that eating a protein bar before dinner (as my mid-day snack) is really helping me to not eat as much when I get home. I also take a sip of water between every bite- this seems like a chore but that is the point of it. It makes me more aware of what I am eating and how much of it I am eating...plus it helps to fill me up and make my brain realize it.

    I pretty much always overeat right before my period... I go insane for a day or two, and then return to normal.

    I don't know if I'm just super lucky or what, but I don't get big cravings. I get minor cramps, and the whole process isn't that bad. Perhaps I should just kiss my OB for putting me on a good RX? On the downside... I have cravings for sweets and anything junky every Friday at 5pm :laugh:

    i crave chocolate every day, but for TOM it's always something salty I want. I use a sodium free cajun seasoning to add to my food, it sometimes helps.

    I don't know this for sure but from the things I have come to know and my experiences the cravings are caused by hormonal changes. It's amazing how our hormones work. I had mentionin a thread the other day that my sister was finally diagnosed with Addisons disease which is an adrenal problem which controls hormones and she always had cravings for sugar and sour stuff.

    I use my iphone to track my cycle and then when I start to feel the cravings/gain weight etc I make note of it in the app that way I can get some idea of when these things occur and it helps to be prepared for it.

    Also there is nothing wrong with letting yourself have some of these things but don't go over board.

    I am jealous of anyone who doesn't have cravings or weight gain around their TOM (and I haven't heard of anyone in that category yet...)

  • Cravings (as with everything else involving my period) vary from month to month. Some months, things won't be that bad. Other months, I WANT TO EAT THE WORLD. Seriously. Chocolate, carbs, fried food? I want them for every meal. I can relate :)

    My last TOM I had just made chocolate covered pretzles for the holidays... I think I ate half of them in like 2 days! They are the best of both worlds! Sweet chocolate with just a touch of salt from the pretzles! YUM!

    having this issue now...i crave sweet..then salt...then sweet....then salt!! So I settle for a granola bar for the sweet (honey n oats) and i'll have either a 1 oz bag of chips or today i had a couple celery stalks with individual cream cheese bucket and that subsided the salt craving...n e thing else...i chew ALOT OF GUM and DRINK A LOT OF WATER!! I know it's coming very soon...and i'm trying SOOOO friggin hard not to cave and by a bag of reese's cups...OY...it is makin me a tad bit more snippy cuz i'm not succombing to the chocolate and n e thing salt! I sware..the things we have to go thru...it's nutz!:grumble:

    I totally have cravings just before and during! My appetite goes up, and I never feel satisfied. I stop myself from constantly grazing, but, wow, it's tough! I agree with some of the others about chocolate. It's like a drug! It just makes my brain happy. Def see cravings for chocolate--any kind, even the Lindt 90%.... Yes, even that! Totally yummy during TOM.... but not as yummy any other day. :wink: I'm trying to replace giving into my food cravings with going for a walk or chewing some gum.

    Same here. Some months is out of control, and other months I barely notice a difference- maybe stress plays a part, too? :huh: I tend to crave cheese- plain cheese, mac and cheese... anything with cheese! :love:
  • Thats funny, I do that too!! I always try to drink a couple drinks of water in between each bite. That away I get both...full and hydrated!!! Great tip!

    I'm really bad about cravings primarily for chocolate... I keep dark choc bars handy bc they are richer so I only need a bite or 2 to do me in... as for salty, I LOVE the 100 cal white chaddar popcorn... perfect amt of snack and salt! :) hope this helps!!!

  • I do not do the Tom thing anymore but I remember vividly that I was ravenous a few days prior, the it hit and my appetite would suddenly go away.

    yep I crave and indulge. I think that TOM is bad enough without me adding to my troubles....... i retain water like crazy but knowing that this is going to be time limited makes it okay so I go with it!
  • I don't get cravings but I am definitely hungrier than normal. I just reckon on the fact that it is temporary and I am not starving so keep plugging along. By the time I start things begin to settle down.

    I crave chocolate and I don't like chocolate! The best thing I have come up with is a tiny piece of candy (like a Hershey's Kiss or Peppermint Patty) and a little peanut butter. And if it's bad, I go over for the day, but I try to do a ton of walking (I find that doesn't make my cramps worse, and that even on the worst day I can stick with it).

    I wish I knew a real answer, it's just one of the joys of being the stronger sex :wink:

    I just posted a topic similar to this when I was on mine.... I found that Quaker Rice Cakes, Chocolate Crunch, topped with extra creamy whip cream, is GREAT. 60 cal for a rice cake and 15-25 cal for the whip cream depending on the kind.... It really helps with the bad cravings!!! Good luck!!!

    last week i ate a wopper and onion rings. 2000 calorie day. soooooooooo unlike me. damn TOM
