Juicing, yes or no?

Hey everyone :-)
I am getting a juicer for my birthday (wohoooo!) and have never done any juicing and heard mixed opinions about it.
Any recommendations for weight loss and the best program for starters?
Do's and dont's and how long did you juice?

adding juice into something that works already... sure. if that's how you like your veggies.

    only juicing? No thanks.

    weight loss = calorie deficit

personally i would rather get my deficit eating yummy food and still have my chocolate and ice cream

I got a juicer because I was having some dental work done, I lost a lot of weight and never got tired or to hungry with almost all juice diet. Now that what I have had done to my mouth is healed I still juice but I eat just about everything I want and don't log. I never gained back the weight, prob because I got a membership to the Y and work out six days a week and just got to where I can jog a mile none stop, it took about two weeks to get that far. Now whenever I eat and feel like I'm getting hungry after just assuming a large quantity of calories I just juice. I also juice in the mornings, it works better then coffee for me.

If you are talking about making a veggie and fruit juice to have with a meal during the day, then go for it! I've had many fresh juiced drinks, along with a meal.
But I wouldn't ever replace my meals with just juice.
So are you planning to have some juice along with your meals? Or planning to just drink juice instead of eating foods??
  • I was planning to do a 3 days juice diet or something like that. I have been on my diet for 2 weeks strict and did not loose on freaking pound. Thought it might be helpful to give my body a jumpstart. Any better recommendations?

    there is no jumpstart.
    Open your diary.
Are you weighing your food? Logging everything accurately?
  • How do I open my diary?
I thought it is open. Yes, I log in everything correctly!

I got a nutribullet and that way you don't throw out the good fiber, you drink it! Juicers take out the fiber so all you get is juice. I hate veggies so this way I can mix them with fruit and chug it and I'm done for the day for veggies. That's the only way I was going to "eat" them.

    food, settings, diary settings.

Logging correctly and accurately weighing are two different things.

I don't specifically juice but from time to time its nice to have a cup of fresh vegetable & fruit juice.

Just don't do one of those ridiculous juicing only diets. Those are dumb.

i began my weight loss journey doing a juicing diet. it is a good way to flush out all the toxins in your body . i did it for about 3 weeks but we had a meal for supper every other week. it is hard ill tell you that from experience. but now for the past 2 weeks i have just been counting calories, eating healthy and exercising. i have a weight loss whey protein shake with almond milk for breakfast and lunch instead and then a healthy meal for supper. i also have snacks between those meals if i am hungry. like string cheese or something light. and if i dont have a shake for lunch ill have an apple with peanutbutter and honey on it with string cheese!
but the juicing thing if you can do it id say just give it a try. but it is very hard!!!!!!!

I think juicing is very healthy for you. Ever watch "fat, sick and nearly dead"? You should!

Stop using cup measurement. Throw away the garcini cambodia. Weigh everything. The .5 cup measure of a scrambled egg is prime example. Just use the egg entry. Scan the container, etc.
Do this for at least six weeks.
You're logging, it just isn't accurate.
After six weeks, if you're still not losing.. but not gaining.. then congrats, you found your maintenance calorie level. From there, cut back 100 calories per day. Repeat for another six weeks.

Not sure how the scanning works.

do you have a food scale? If no, then get one and use it as often as possible..

what are you using to measure calorie burns? If the MFP database, or exercise machine these tend to be way off. I would recommend eating only half of your exercise calories back.

Juicing is not going to "jump start" anything ...if you want to do it because you like it then go for it, but it is not going to produce any magical results....

I'm not a fan of juicing, too much waste, but I love smoothies. Lately I've been substituting a green smoothie with a pitcher of water for a meal when I feel like I've eaten too much.

If you're doing a juice diet for a cleanse or weight loss I wouldn't bother. Use the search function to find a thread titled something like "you're eating more than you think you are" and the basics of weighing/measuring your food. Get a food scale if you don't already have one and keep in mind MFP overestimates your calories burned, so if you're eating back your exercise calories you may want to start with eating back 1/2 or 2/3 instead of all of them.
  • I have a juicer and i really enjoy being able to have fresh fruit and veggie juice (especially carrot and orange) Sometimes i drink a glass of fresh juice for breakfast or with a light lunch or when i'm not feeling well and want the extra nutrients to fight off a cold but i've never been able to stick to any sort of juice cleanse and am not sure i believe in them.

I would agree that a good blender is a better investment though. I love smoothies and think you get more from them.

What Trog said...he's dead on. Dude's lost 153 lbs.

Cup measure isn't as accurate as a food scale. I have a food scale that weighs solids and liquids. I love it.

Phone app has a bar code scanner...scan bar code, then select how many, or how much.

Trog's advice is sound. Weighing is a true eye opener. Things like 1/2 an orange, .5 cups spinach are very inaccurate. Weighing on a scale will change your view of how much you are eating. You're doing so well logging - it's a shame if you are still eating more than you think. Try this - have patience!

I tried a juice diet that was supposed to be three days, felt horrible and broke down and ate so much bread on the second day. I switched to blending my fruits and veggies for a snack or small meal and I feel so much better and lost more. I really needed the fiber that the juice alone wasn't giving me.

    Also, as a sidenote

go back and change your goal from 2lbs per week to .5lb per week.

All juicing does is allows you to consume more calories and sugar in liquid form instead of just eating real food. Eat the fruits and vegetables!

Also, juicing removes pulp from the foods you put in there - pulp is where the fiber is. Therefore, juicing is a horrible idea and I just don't get why people insist on doing it.

THIS. You do not have very much weight to lose. 1200 calories is most likely too low. However, yes, WEIGH your food if you want to know how much you are really eating. Otherwise you are guessing. You can easily be guessing wrong enough to not be losing any weight.
