Post from in thread:Chicken, peanut butter, and Rebuild Strength (I know you don't like powders, but I had to throw that in there anyway). I like chicken for lean meat, and that really helps me lean out more. I always grill my chicken. I like peanut butter because it makes a good snack when consumed with foods like celery or apples. These snacks help curb my hunger, and give me vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants at the same time. The Rebuild Strength post-workout shake is great because it has 24 grams per serving, and it helps my muscles recover after a workout, and also promotes muscle growth. I highly recommend that for anyone who works out. So, those are my favorite proteins. There really isn't a protein I don't like, but those are my favorites.
Peanut butter is the second source offered to someone looking for more protein in their diet. While I don't deny there is protein in it it is not what I would consider a go to #2 source.0 -
I love peanut butter. I consider my PB2 a good protein source and use it for the protein. I don't consider peanut butter a protein source and don't use it as one when planning.
Other things that people try to convince vegetarians are great sources of protein are quinoa and hummus.
(Quinoa is a good choice when making a grain selection because of the complete protein profile, but it's another one I wouldn't promote as an easy way to get more protein.)0 -

Yeah, what's up with Quinoa anyway? 14g for nearly 400 calories? Like you said, great if you're looking for a grain because hey, incidental protein, but pushed as an actual source? Meh0 -
*sigh* all this arguing about peanut butter.
Peanut butter contains fat and protein. It's delicious. Consume it in moderation unless you have an allergy.
That is all.0 -

Do you not think that how someone views a food might influence their perspective of that foods macro/micro?
I have high BP...so I focus on sodium and potassium. I drink 8oz of low sodium every morning...for the potassium that it delivers. I could care less about the other nutrients it furnishes. I view bananas in the same way...it is another potassium source. Potatoes...I have once or twice a week...for the same reason. Some will say that these foods are a carbs source...while that might be so...they are a potassium source for me since that is my focus.
Protein is the main focus of many people here on MFP...so it stands to reason that they would focus on foods that supply that protein...even if protein is not its highest macro.0 -
USA is one of the few countries that count Peanut Butter as a protein source. Most countries count it as a Fat source. That means, when I eat Peanut Butter & Butter sammitches, I'm eating a double-fat whammy.
Mmm Mmm good!0 -

the poster listed it as a snack that can help curb hunger...not as a "#2 protein source' ...so this is what spawned your desire to enlighten us?0 -

I've been experimenting with quinoa. The benefit I see is it is gluten free. It can be used in baking so you get a complete protein baked good that is gluten free. Other than that, I don't see a huge benefit to guinoa. I like it but my husband so far has not liked anything I've made with it. It's a textural thing for him. I have quinoa flour to test which he likely won't have a problem with. Quinoa flour can be used as a replacement for wheat flour, again for a gluten free cooking. Quinoa is an approved Paleo food so is popular with those eating Paleo. However, I've bought three brands of organic quinoa and all the packages said there could be traces of wheat so I'm not sure how those eating Paleo are dealing with that issue.0 -

Yes this spawned my post because well it is being pushed as a goto protein source when it is a moderate source at best.
Edit to add bolded showed this poster thinks of it as a goto protein source.0 -

You are now enlightened.
wait, so the Buddha dedicated his life to seeking enlightenment and found it through meditation and the middle way....
yet you're saying he could have skipped all of that and just learned the fact that peanut butter contains more fat than protein and that because of this some people don't think it should count as a protein source....
..... okay.

Air is not an oxygen source!!!!!
It's 78% nitrogen and only 21% oxygen.

I'm a vegetarian, so most of my protein sources have minimal protein in them. All the hype about quinoa, I finally grabbed a box and bought it without actually reading the label. I got it home and read the label and was kind of chicked it was so little for so many calories. I never opened it and ended up donating it to a food bank.0 -

I'm a fan of quinoa. I eat it instead of rice or pasta most of the time.0 -
And now I want some peanut butter!0

I think we all clearly see what peanut Butter has in it, when we log it in our own diaries. So not sure what your point is here.
To be fair to the OP, when someone asks for ways to up their protein, peanut butter is almost always suggested. It is a protein source, however, there are lots of other options with far more protein. Plus, if we are talking about staying under a calorie limit and macros, peanut butter isn't the easier source to up protein and hit both of these targets.
I tend to use peanut butter more of fat source than protein, but to say it isn't a protein source is kinda silly. I do "get" her point, but the delivery was lacking.
my doctor is pushing pb a lot in my diet, as i am a recovering anorexic and need lots of healthy fats which pb provides. yes, it is a source of fat but saying it is not a protein source is not accurate. if someone is trying to lose weight then obviously they don't want to have too much pb and set their macros over. but for anyone maintaining, gaining or even losing and only eating a tbsp or two then there is nothing wrong with it. fats are good for you :]0 -
Yeah, what's up with Quinoa anyway? 14g for nearly 400 calories? Like you said, great if you're looking for a grain because hey, incidental protein, but pushed as an actual source? Meh
I'm a vegetarian, so most of my protein sources have minimal protein in them. All the hype about quinoa, I finally grabbed a box and bought it without actually reading the label. I got it home and read the label and was kind of chicked it was so little for so many calories. I never opened it and ended up donating it to a food bank.
I'm a fan of quinoa. I eat it instead of rice or pasta most of the time.0 -

My husband was repulsed the night he made spaghetti and I put marinara sauce and parmesan on my quinoa. I still like my pasta though.0 -

Well, you can have both - quinoa pasta (made with quinoa flour). It is sold at health food stores.0 -
It contains protein therefore it is a protein source.0

And I still like to dip my bananas in it!0

Yeah, what's up with Quinoa anyway? 14g for nearly 400 calories? Like you said, great if you're looking for a grain because hey, incidental protein, but pushed as an actual source? Meh
I'm a vegetarian, so most of my protein sources have minimal protein in them. All the hype about quinoa, I finally grabbed a box and bought it without actually reading the label. I got it home and read the label and was kind of chicked it was so little for so many calories. I never opened it and ended up donating it to a food bank.
Minimal protein? How about Tofu? I'm a meat-eater, but I also enjoy Tofu. My Organic shop here has numerous types. All are high in protein - yes, Soja protein. But it is quite delicious.0 -
Air is not an oxygen source!!!!!
It's 78% nitrogen and only 21% oxygen.
This sums up my thinking on this topic nicely and has just the right amount of snark attached.0 -
